Nikademus -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/28/2009 10:01:36 PM)

Joe makes me pay for ignoring the threat to my transports, but not in the way i thought. No carriers show up to decimate me... (Thank goodness), instead 11th Air Fleet finally comes out of it's hibernation reinforced, and looking for blood. Given the intensity of the attacks, I didn't fare too badly but coupled with attacks made on Lunga for the first time, I lose a transport and 3 cargo ships + Destroyer Buchannon. The good news is that 25th Brigade is mostly unloaded but i'm having to bug out now with the remaining heavy guns of the unit to prevent further slaughter. I'm retreating the TF to PM where it can finish unloading. The CLAA escort is returning to Noumea and my carriers are withdrawing south. I have 9 days to go before CV Hornet arrives and I am planning to coincide her appearance with a major resupply effort of Guadalcanal.

looks like i also nailed a tanker as well as punished two more Iboats.

Estimated losses for the two days and combat report

Nikademus -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/29/2009 12:33:24 AM)

Another quiet pair of days. Only two events of note: B-26's from Port Morosby attacked another APD found lurking near the vicinity of Lae, which coastwatchers report contains 3 ships at this time. Unfortunately my B-17's are repairing this turn set. Thats ok.....their next mission is Rabaul. Gotta keep Joe on his toes.

The other event is my carrier TF's stumble across yet another Iboat. Lol....figured i was safe in my current location. Fortunately the boat misses the target DD and we pound it into scrap for it's trouble (allegedly....but confidently)

Still counting the days till CV Hornet arrives. I can't help but know that Joe has 3 CV's available now (Might have to try the variable ship entry feature one of these games) and i want to maximize my bets. In this scenario, the US carriers are a true precious gem. They are all that stands between the Japan player pummelling Lunga with massive surface forces and even if only damaged and KO'd........it would still mean virtual defeat for the Allied side. Things are tight though. The relief convoy at Noumea is nearly full loaded. This time thousands of tons of supply will be delivered if successful....enough for Lunga to sustain itself for a while if not pummeled too hard. I'm waiting though......one more week. Lunga is in the "pink" for supply meaning she is under her required level but at this point the LCU's have their supply alotment and i've built two fort levels. (and stopped to conserve supply)

Port Morosby is at level 4 for Fort levels now and Milne bay, reinforced to two Brigades (one Militia) is at level 3. I'm confident the latter can withstand any but a full scale assault now. PM is more vulnerable now and i'll have to addresss that when PP's allow. Meanwhile the base continues to harrass with it's airfields.

Nikademus -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/29/2009 5:50:58 AM)

intense turn.....my pilots claim no less than 41 Japanese aircraft downed in the last two days. In return, my 25th Bde convoy gets further wrecked. If the claims are true however, it might prove worth it. This would mean that 11th Air Fleet is temporarily defanged for the most part which would make my upcoming Operation Restore easier to fullfill. Japanese carriers remain a distinctive threat however.

ny59giants -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/29/2009 4:13:31 PM)

Are the P-39s that much of a "Betty Killer" or is it something else??

What armament does the P-39s carry?? What altitide do they do their best work at in this mod??

treespider -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/29/2009 5:19:59 PM)

Betty's and Nell's in general in AE are more vulnerable....take a look at what the Beef-a-low's are capable of in some of the other AAR's.

Nikademus -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/29/2009 5:22:27 PM)

The P-39 in the game has always been a bit of a bomber killer thx to it's standard armament. No different really in AE. As only land base SPS values are different in this scenario, the P-39 preforms same here as in any other AE scenario. I had them set to 10k which is in their best bracket of preformance. Per the game rules though, intercepting CAP attacks at the altitude set by the bombers. One key difference though is that altitude estimates for enemy raids are not 100% accurate.

Dili -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/29/2009 7:44:40 PM)

I am betting this will need to be tweaked.

racndoc -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/30/2009 1:51:58 AM)

Nik...

Nice work on the ASW....looks like even your air combat and surface TFs are scoring hits on IJN subs. Ive never had that much success before....even with dedicated ASW TFs and especially in mid 1942 when the experience levels are lower and the ASW upgrades are minimal. Are you placing super aggressive leaders in charge of your TFs? Are you placing most of your TF's float planes on ASW or are Catalinas flying ASW to increase the IJN subs detection levels? Or has ASW been changed significantly in AE?

Nikademus -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/30/2009 3:30:05 AM)

I'm not doing anything to tweak my ASW. As for how ASW works in AE........ It may be SAIEW (same as it ever was) in comparison to stock.

AE however, is a mod friendly expansion, thx to it's improved editor. After release....i may publish a true port of my old guad scenario (which itself was a 'mod' of stock). That version, among other things, has much more elusive subs...at least in deep water. In either case though its never a good idea to stick subs into shallow port hexes where there are signifigant ASW assets.

Nikademus -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/30/2009 5:00:41 AM)

Joe sent me the wrong combat report and replay.....but nothing seems to have happened. Nothing blew up. No planes lost in combat . Just another quiet day in the neigborhood.

uh oh......

Przemcio231 -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/30/2009 12:35:57 PM)

What that stuff might be???[:D] Question dose that 2 ship icon shows 2xTF or 1 TF????

Nikademus -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/30/2009 4:29:11 PM)

the two ship icon is a standard "TF" icon. Depending on your Detection/Intel level you might be able to place your mouse cursor on it and get a composition and size estimate. In this case I got nothing. I know there are x # of unknown Japanese ships. I suspect carriers but i won't be drawn out till i'm ready.

Nikademus -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/30/2009 4:52:19 PM)

definately a carrier TF IMO.

Nikademus -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/30/2009 8:33:16 PM)

S-38 fails in an attack on an escort....probably being supply and or troops to NG. Intel states that 18th Army is planning for an attack on Port Morosby so I need to get US troops there from the 32nd Inf division soon. (initial plan is one regiment and one arty regiment of that Div)

First though.....i have to get the newly arrived 7th Marine Regiment to Lunga along wih supply. The massive convoy (5 AP with a dozen escorts, (DD, DMS, PC) is currently loading and i'm one day out from receiving a fourth carrier (Hornet) If Joe contests it he'll face the full might of the Navy's carrier power.

Nikademus -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/31/2009 5:21:48 PM)

Nothing much combat reply to report.

My convoy has reached Lunga and is in the process of unloading. My carriers are positioned NE and out of Rabaul's fighter range in distant cover. We'll see if Joe reacts.

vettim89 -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/31/2009 6:26:07 PM)

Got some questiosn and comments on this screen

1. Thank for the leader rating thing. Really nice to have that on the main air unit info screen
2. Naval Attack/Ground attack. You know how many times I wish I had this in stock?
3. Nice little detail with the sq size expansion. You guys are amazing
4. What is WOff loss?

Mistmatz -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/31/2009 6:38:24 PM)

Maybe 'Write Off'?

But dont ask me what the difference to an Op Loss would be. :)

guess op loss is a loss immediately during or after coming home from a mission. WOff means the ac is damaged and after trying it to repair after some time they decide it canīt be repaired and the ac is written off...

I am sure that is it but I wonder what is the advantage of WOff? If you write off a few airframes does it increase the repair rate of other a/c in the unit? That's how it worked in RL

Nikademus -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/31/2009 8:50:18 PM)

"Write off"

plane so badly shot up it won't ever be allowed to fly again.

Barb -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/31/2009 9:49:47 PM)

Write off is a write of. Same as kill, but no pilot losses [:)] I even think Woffs are counted in victory points as shot down are...

spence -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/31/2009 10:19:25 PM)

quote:

I am betting this will need to be tweaked.

Why should the bomber killing abilities of the P-39 be tweaked when the bombers are offering themselves up at altitudes that the P-39 was perfectly suited for: naval attack with torpedoes is a low altitude affair. The aircrew of Bettys referred to their steeds as "Ronsons" after all (a brand of cigarette lighter for those who never smoked). 2 x .50s and 4 x .30s (to say nothing of the 37mm) were plenty enough to introduce a flying gas tank to the "joys of smoking".

The problems of the P-39 manifested at Port Moresby (especially) were associated with the high altitude at which the Japanese raids appeared, not because the P-39 was manifestly unsuited to combat at any altitude.

Dili -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/31/2009 10:38:35 PM)

Shooting a vlow level is never easy. 39 kills means that a lot of P-39 had a way to be in a firing position successfull. When Hellcat and Corsair appear then nothing will stop them if their advantage is still a very big step over P-39.

Nikademus -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/31/2009 10:58:22 PM)

the Airacobra's bomber prowess is good at most altitudes in the game i have found.

Nikademus -> RE: Guadalcanal AE AAR Allied NoJoe (5/31/2009 11:53:28 PM)

The operation proves a complete success. No Japanese opposition whatsoever. (YAWN!)
