i really enjoy this game. i'm not a grognard...i find this very accessible. i also like the counters that depict the actual troops. i find the nato symbols a little too nebulous. i also like the fact that it seems to me to be mostly opertional and not strategic.

are there other world war 2 or modern games similar to this one?

thanks........Bill

I'll be interested to hear an answer to your querry as well. I love CEAW and would love to carry on the positive experience I have had from it. I know Strategic Command is very similar in some ways but the look and feel of SC is very cheap 486ish game. If you have played CEAW I think Strategic Command will be a major dissappointment.

Strategic Command 2: Blitzkrieg (European Theatre)
Strategic Command WWII Pacifig Theatre

They are both quite similar to this game. I am great fun of all these 3 excellent
wargames. Advanced Tactics II is also very good wargame, not quite the same though,
but close enough to make every strategy player drooling after it.

Yeah HOI2 is also great game, but still different. I suggest you wait for while if intrested about it. They are currently making Hearts of Iron 3, which will be amazing and well worth waiting its release.

bairdlander2 -> RE: Other games like this? (5/26/2009 2:09:49 AM)

I wouldnt get HOI3 upon release,it will be full of bugs and most likely unplayable.Wait maybe a month untill they release a patch.

GaryChildress -> RE: Other games like this? (5/26/2009 2:22:23 AM)

Wow! I've been living in a cave! [:o] I didn't realize they had a second version of Strategic Command out. It actually looks a LOT better than the first version. [X(]

Bill,

On this same site, have a look at Gary Grigsby's A World Divided and WW2: Road to Victory.

If you like the Napoleonic wars there is also: Commander Napoleon at War

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tt.asp?forumid=614

Guns of August is also good, not as fast as CEaW and not as easy and intuitive. Only problem I find it's not suitable for pbem, even when it has that featurre implemented.

Bty, imho, GG A World Divided is by far the best game I've ever played, specially when playing by mail.

On the other side the HOI series are real time strategy games, I found them too cumber to be played, I got the first one and was full of bugs, but there are people who love them.

Hearts of Iron 2 is no way like this. Its overly complex and not all that much fun unless you just want to play the limited scenarios - once you start the main campaign it just gets overwhelming. The old Panzer General games are very similar and you can find them on Ebay but the early ones are quite basic. This CEAW game reminds me of the wargames I used to play on my Spectrum thats why I like it. Very playable and graphically superb unlike HOI2.

Silverdog -> RE: Other games like this? (5/29/2009 4:05:27 AM)

I’ve always enjoyed the simple yet compelling gameplay of CEAW. I will also echo the recommendations for Gary Grigsby's A World Divided and Advanced Tactics. And yes Advanced Tactics is not quite in this genre, but I recommend it, and I’m no grognard either.

Yes you are correct.HOI2 can be overwhelming to an individual with low intelligence.

...or, you know, someone not in to micromanagement...

bairdlander2 -> RE: Other games like this? (6/1/2009 1:41:49 AM)

You have the option for AI auto control on trade, production etc if you find micro-management to much to handle. Some prefer that. But overall for realism it is far superior to Commander.

Erik Rutins -> RE: Other games like this? (6/1/2009 2:06:56 AM)

No personal attacks, please.

CEAW isn't intended to be the pinnacle of grand strategy realism. With that said, while HOI is a fine game and one I've enjoyed but it is also not realistic. It is much more detailed, yes, and chock full of great historical tidbits, but I've seen many unrealistic ahistorical outcomes with HOI as well.

A lot of how realistic a game turns out also comes down to how the player plays it. I think if you try to follow a basically realistic strategy in both HOI and CEAW, you'll get generally realistic results. For more realism, but also a higher learning curve, I'd recommend Gary Grigsby's A World Divided. I've found that plays out the whole war on a global scale more realistically than just about any other full world grand strategy WWII game I've played and it doesn't tend to allow things to go "off the rails" as far as historical plausibility to the same degree as many others.

Alternately, look at the upcoming World in Flames, if you really want maximum realism and detail but be prepared to climb a learning "cliff". Similarly, for the Pacific Theater as a grognard's game War in the Pacific can't be beat and the upcoming Admiral's Edition takes that to a whole new level.

- Erik

jbunnelle -> RE: Other games like this? (6/13/2009 8:22:46 PM)

Agreed, there's room for all.  I love CEAW, TOAW, HOI2, SC1 & 2, etc.  HOI2 is massive and, yes, does allow for ahistorical outcomes, mainly because you have that huge span of time from 36-39 to tweak tech expenditures and such.  So it's more "customizable", while still keeping the historical flavor.  Also real-time, which is really hard to manage at times.
CEAW is a smaller scale, turn-based, and much more realistic, i.e. hard for the Axis.
