A few issues I had with the original...just wanted to check if they had been altered (fixed is a relative term).

1. The issues with the language used...refresh rates...from what I remember it was worse as the game went on
2. Aircraft in the same hex as land units - can you now do this?
3. Lack of action in North Afrika
4. Naval system - as soon as subs attacked they were swamped from miles around and annihilated
5. Lack of strategic thinking by the Ai - namely no line of defense but simply create a wall of units round cities

I did love the game initially when I first got it and really wanted to continue to do so, and it wasn't a bad game by a long shot, but the above features or lack of made it impossible to love it for very long. I ended up giving it to someone on these forums for her father.

Anyway, I saw the game was re-released (also in retail I noticed) and wondered if the above things had been addressed....if so, I could give it another look - I did love the Panzer General feel - but Panzer General was never strategic on a global scale, and maybe the reasons were discovered when this was made. I wouldn't mind looking again if it had been given a significant overhaul.

From my limited play with the Gold version (3 games) as opposed to the original (perhaps 50 games)

1.  Not sure what you mean, I have never seen this.  By 'Language used' do you mean certain localized versions?  I use US-English and I haven't seen this issue.

3.  It seems the AI is a little more interested in N. Africa now than it was.
4.  I do not and have never had this problem once I got a handle on proper use of subs.  Well I mean it happens occasionally, its how the allies eventually break the sub blockade.  Since subs are invisible on a turn they do not attack, if it was not possible to attack them and destroy them in a single turn they would be almost impossible to defeat.
5.  The AI is the AI, it does seem somewhat better, it does form lines.  I have never seen it just hedgehog about cities, but the AI seems a bit crisper now in ints play.

1. No idea what you mean here - I have no problems with any performance in the game.
2. No, and there is no reason since aircraft have very long range. In a few areas where it would make sense to base aircraft with a land unit like Gibraltar, Malta, etc - there is a mod called BJR mod that gives an extra hex next to the island that is specifically and only for basing aircraft and cannot be attacked by house rule from any hex other than from the island itself if it falls to the enemy.
3. Vs the AI it's not even worth playing the game as far as I can tell. I doubt it can do much in North Africa. Vs another human in PBEM you will often find plenty of action in North Africa since the Iraqui oil is very valuable for Germany.
4. I play PBEM with the BJR mod. This mod prohibits any attacks on by a ship unless the ship starts the turn adjacent to the sub. It also prohibits attacks by air against a sub unless the air unit starts adjacent to the sub. This forces you to escort your transports and convoys. It's quite realistic I think and makes subs actually worth using. In 1941 and 1942 they can be very effective. Usually by 1943 the allies have built enough destroyers, and developed enough naval and ASW tech that subs become a losing proposition for the Germans and the Germans quit repairing them. It's really probably the best representation of the war in the Atlantic of any game I've ever played.
5. AI is weak in every game I've ever played. Any human can beat the AI in computer strategy games. PBEM is the only challenge in any stategy game other than maybe Chess or Checkers or something very simple that can have a strong AI.

If you play get the 1.12 (gold) patch and the BJR mod. For the mod you will have to read the house rules to play it because some things are done by the player not by the game - such as the sub attack limit I mentioned above.

This is the big one for me. Air units consuming entire hexes at this scale is just wrong. Even Panzer General had that option, and that was at the tactical level.

Only to add to what my friend JJDenver said - Except there is a new MOD called GS, It's an automated version of the BJR MOD. It's up to ver 1.04 now. See the info on the slitherine forum.
