JonBrave -> *Please* help identify a game.... (5/31/2009 2:49:00 PM)

I am questioning my sanity, and hoping you guys can help!

I am trying to find a PC game that I am 90% sure exists and I played a few years ago (within the last 5?). It could even be a Matrix game, certainly similar. My hazy recollection is:

  • The most important feature was that I think you could opt to play out battles (whenever you wanted, or you could quick-resolve?) on some simple real-time map mode. There might have been hexes. I think AI units would appear over time, you couldn't see them all at once. It's possible it was turn-based here, but I don't think so.
  • I think it was American Civil War.
  • I have the impression there was one of those small mini-maps with little rectangles for the units from both sides, certainly blue squares and the opposition red or grey?
  • I don't recall, but suspect the main game was turn-based, and I guess you opted to fight out tactically when armies met.

I have gone thru all my myriad games without spotting it. I have searched on-line (& here), especially thru all Civil War games, but found nothing that jolts my memory. I have the impression it might have been around when Crown of Glory was out, but I don't think it can be CoG because that has turn based tacticals. It is possible, I guess, that I only had a demo.

Does this ring any bells for anyone. Or, am I just losing my marbles???? Please take pity on my poor memory..........

SS Hauptsturmfuhrer -> RE: *Please* help identify a game.... (5/31/2009 3:42:58 PM)

Maybe a Gary Grisby game like A World Divided or Forge of Freedom.  I'm not playing those so I'm not sure.  Your description is kinduv like them or something else.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:American_Civil_War_video_games

Have a look through there.

Hmm, it does not include a number of games there. Quite a few missing actually. The old SSG Civil War games for one.

Erik Rutins -> RE: *Please* help identify a game.... (5/31/2009 6:17:24 PM)

That sounds most like Forge of Freedom to me:

Hertston -> RE: *Please* help identify a game.... (5/31/2009 8:01:16 PM)

Agreed it sounds like FoF; except for the real-time battles. There's an older one, though, the memory of which keeps nagging me, but I can't remember the name and can't find it anywhere. It would have been contemporary with the original release of Frank Hunter's ACW game, as I seem to remember directly comparing the two at the time.

KG Erwin -> RE: *Please* help identify a game.... (5/31/2009 8:47:46 PM)

Could it be "Civil War Generals 2"? I Googled it, and it is now available as abandonware.

JonBrave -> RE: *Please* help identify a game.... (5/31/2009 9:33:01 PM)

@sapper
Yep, gone through that Google list already!

@Erik, et al
I have been beginning to believe it must be FoF too. Meaning I'm wrong about the realtime battles, I guess. Hmmmmmmm
Looking at the screenshots, the little dots on the strategic look familiar..
There was never a demo, was there?

killroyishere -> RE: *Please* help identify a game.... (5/31/2009 10:54:04 PM)

Try to find Frank Hunters American Civil War as it has a campaign mode like Civil War Generals and when you pick a terrirtory you go into a turn based battle for that province of historical flavor. It has the square blue and red counters you spoke of also. I'm almost betting that is the one.

No, that was a tactical game that played much like Age of Rifles. I'll remember what I'm thinking of eventually.

the ever watchful Mr. Rutins strikes again. FoF is my guess

gunny -> RE: *Please* help identify a game.... (6/1/2009 1:39:57 AM)

imperialism maybe? Not civil war tho 1890's. Did have tactical resolution.

killroyishere -> RE: *Please* help identify a game.... (6/1/2009 4:04:34 AM)

I think I confused the game you are looking for with Frank Hunters game Sumpter to Appo.

I think it's "Civil War Battleset" you are looking for now.

The one above has a strategic map where you pick the state you want to battle in and then the game goes into a tactical battle screen.

It has the following battles:
quote:

Gettysburg,5,getty1.civ,getty2.civ,getty3.civ,getty1d.civ,culphill.civ
Washington,5,bullrun1.civ,fbullrun.civ,manass2.civ,bold.civ,fred.civ
Antietam,2,antietam.civ,sharpsbg.civ
Kentucky,1,perryvil.civ
Valley,0
Richmond,6,chancevl.civ,spots.civ,petbrg.civ,malvrnhl.civ,nanna.civ,cold.civ
Pea Ridge,1,pearidge.civ
Nashville,5,stone1.civ,franklin.civ,stoneriv.civ,&stones.civ,donelson.civ
Memphis,1,&shiloh.civ
Chattanooga,4,chick.civ,mission.civ,chickama.civ,knoxville.civ
Raleigh,1,benton.civ
Shiloh,2,shiloh.civ,shiloh1.civ
Charleston,1,glory.civ
Atlanta,1,resaca.civ
Vicksburg,0
Montgomery,1,ebeneezr.civ
Savannah,0
New Orleans,0
Mobile,1,mobile.civ

Or it could be this one by W.R. Hutsell (this is how I confused it with Hunter both start with an H)

The one above is a strategy game but no tactical battles though. It's what I would call a fast paced beer & pretzels Civil War game that plays out quite well and you can play a game out in a few hours.

Both of these games might be hard to find now but they both work on XP without using DosBox to my amazement as I just loaded them both to have a look at the game screens. The Battleset game definitely has the blue/red X for infantry icons.

Sounds like he's looking for The Civil War from Empire.. believe it was made in England in 1994

Everything he writes that he remembers leads me to this conclusion

The reviews for it are horrible. I surely hope this isn't the one he really wants.

[Edited: No links to sites like that, please.]

JonBrave -> RE: *Please* help identify a game.... (6/2/2009 12:05:03 PM)

I'm reading all your replies, guys, thanks.
I don't think we're talking about going back to a 90s game.
I suppose FoF is the front-runner, but I'm bothered by the lack of real-time.
I really need to play it to see. That would have to mean I had a demo. But there never was a demo, right? Not even in a magazine? Would that mean I found a warez demo?? I truly don't think I do that!
I looked at CoG, because I have that, but I don't think that's right for the battles.

Suppose I said I cannot even be certain it's an ACW game, just name me the game!?

I do think I am going mad...

Hidde -> RE: *Please* help identify a game.... (6/2/2009 12:47:43 PM)

For Liberty, maybe?
http://www.matrixgames.com/products/336/details/For.Liberty!
No real-time battles, though.

Yeah, what's all this going to these "freedownload abandonware" sites, and then getting asked to "just pay for day" to do a download??
