Another MTW fan here! I don't play it as often as I used to, but it still remains one of my 5 favorite games of all time. The XL Mod is my favorite as well, although I also enjoy Hellenic TW and Samurai Warlords. Good times, good times.... [8D]

As for the problem(s) getting MTW to run on newer graphics cards, the main culprits are the Nvidia 8xxx and 9xxx series. There are solutions and/or workarounds for a lot of these cards, but you often have to dig a little to find them. (And good f****** luck if you have an actual Nvidia 8800. For whatever reason, that particular card doesn't allow you to run MTW at all, no matter what you do.)

Often times, the best option -- other than to stop playing MTW altogether -- is to switch to another video card. A lot of people seem to have had success with the ATI series, although I can't personally vouch for them (I have a somewhat older XFX card which is no longer manufactured).

Here's what a Mayan city looks like after an English army takes it over.  They always attack during a driving rainstorm and not before carefully surrounding the city with 5 armies stocked with cannon, musketeers, cavalry and armored troops so they can hit the city from 5 sides all at once.  You can walk across the courtyard without ever stepping on the tiles.

The French are now My Vassal state and at some stage i will remove them completely,at present i have a VERY competent Assasin doing the rounds along with a Rather good Diplomat that has persuaded a few hundred troops to defect to me.Spain is quaking and has most of its ports blockaded, portugal is living a charmed life. The Moors have been lulled into a false sense of security and will be most suprised when the lose ALL their cities at once.I will post some screenies for your delight.

andym, let's see your screenies. I love screenies. The assassins in this game are cool like with the retinue they can build up. My Mayan killers are not doing so well cause all the English generals are so high level. I killed 3 hotshot English generals in that battle picture I posted above even though we lost the city.

Here are some more screenies from my Mayan battles.

My veteran army under a new commander was attacked by two Spanish armies so we did a Custer's last stand on this hill. They released our troops after the fight so they refitted and joined my Emperor to kill off 4 Spanish armies before my Emperor finally died in battle under a hail of gunfire.

Here is a typical Spanish firing line of musketeers and native auxiliary archers pouring out fire on my hapless Mayans. We fight with the heart of a lion to stop the death and disease the white man brings.

Here lies chest-deep the remains of a Spanish army that had been trying to secure our gateway. Our temple guards and town militia held the enemy in a vicegrip while archers hailed fire down on them. It was a one-sided slaughter of the white man.

Native vs native fights are longer and more brutal cause Europeans rely on guns killing people off at long range while the natives rely on clubs connecting with noggins. It's really hard to tell who is on what side but it doesn't matter as long as the fight is good. This is a fight on a Saturday afternoon in the hot summer heat. Another tribe came over and they're like 'Hey, wanna scrap?' We're like, "Ya sure, why not."

I've been playing the TW series since Shogun. Was addicted right off the bat. :)

CheddarLover74 -> RE: A Bit About "Medieval: Total War I" (8/15/2009 7:40:59 AM)

I think that out of the three TW games i played i enjoyed MTW the most

RTW was almost cartoonish in unit speeds and casualties.MTWII toned it down a bit but the unit speeds are still cartoonish.

If all i wanted was a game where i had to keep constantly double clicking as my main tactic i would be playing all the other RTS games out there

Gommer -> RE: A Bit About "Medieval: Total War I" (8/16/2009 8:36:30 PM)

The best thing about having a Matrix Games' game is having the Serial Numbers on-line and never losing them again! When I last re-installed GG's WBtS I had just fired up the Members' Page and used the old cut-and-paste to get the serial # to the install window (and of course patch windows too), easy as pie.

Unfortunately this does nothing to help my pathetic brain wrap itself around actually learning the bloody game. But I'll never have trouble with losing the Serial Number!

I also love the TW series, although the Demo to the latest installment will NOT work, period. Thanks Steam, you've effectively ended my "I will own all TW games!" streak. I have buddy that's a fellow TW fan, and he can't get the demo to work off of Steam either.
