The AI is basically the same one as in WITP but tweaked for the new circumstances. Just as in WITP it's great for learning, not so good for a challenge. The campaigns are 4 years long and strat in 22 and 28 (I think). There are some interesting variants that give you the big ships scarpped at the time of the Washington Treaty. Also the China set up is different and everyone's starting forces are a lot weaker, even Japan's ground force take a while to ramp up. The allies start up woefully weak and build up slowly but will eventually overwhelm Japan, the trick is to know when to start the counter attack, too early and you get creamed, too late and Japan will win on points. The main difference you will notice is the lack of airpower, even long range search planes have ranges of 1 or 2 hexes so it gets up close and personal at sea.
