sapper_astro -> Warplan Orange: Dreadnoughts in the Pacific. (6/12/2009 4:05:00 PM)

Just been having a look at this while I wait for a few gaming issues to be sorted. It actually looks quite interesting. Can anyone give some thoughts on it and how their experiences with it are? Specifically the campaigns provided, and the ability of the AI? Any other observations are welcome.

The AI is basically the same one as in WITP but tweaked for the new circumstances. Just as in WITP it's great for learning, not so good for a challenge.

The campaigns are 4 years long and strat in 22 and 28 (I think). There are some interesting variants that give you the big ships scarpped at the time of the Washington Treaty. Also the China set up is different and everyone's starting forces are a lot weaker, even Japan's ground force take a while to ramp up. The allies start up woefully weak and build up slowly but will eventually overwhelm Japan, the trick is to know when to start the counter attack, too early and you get creamed, too late and Japan will win on points.

The main difference you will notice is the lack of airpower, even long range search planes have ranges of 1 or 2 hexes so it gets up close and personal at sea.

Sounds quite good, apart from the AI. Still, as long as it is competent.

How far do the maps spread? And which nations are present besides Japan, China and the US?

I quite like the idea of big Battleship warfare actually.

It's like WitP minus air warfare.

And with much less capable submarines. It think those old S-class subs of the USN are the highest of high tech in the later scenario. Basically it´s all up to the big boys slugging it out.
