World War One

You are appointed an officer of a French infantry regiment in the trenches in WW1, taking over from the previous guy who was court martialed for being a slackass. It's obvious your troops are not firing at the Germans despite the enemy walking around in plain view and the Germans follow the same etiquette of ignoring the French who mill around outside of the trenches. Some of your men even go over to the German lines to have dinner and play cards every evening, and the Germans even provide French patrols with 'captured' German helmets, guns and barbed wire so they can prove to their commanders they are actively fighting the Germans.

So what do you do? Order up some artillery fire and a night raid to do some killing and generate some kind of fighting spirit? Maybe get some sniping and mustard gas up and running? Or do you put up your feet and join the poker players and maybe fire an occasional artillery shell carefully aimed to miss the Germans and of course warn them in advance of the time and place the shells will arrive?

What kind of man are you?

Well, I would tell my men to hide knives(including my self) and on the next night of poker with the germans, me and my men assisinate them all at the table, and then once we kill enough I will order an infantry charge by 2 Battalions taking the trench.

Thats what I would do.[8D]

I saw a movie about that where they had Christmas dinner together, then the higher ups found out and split the unit up. Don't remember the title of the movie though.

Given that I knew what I know now and the absolute futility of WWI, I'd make some stupid rule in my unit that such behaviour is punishable by death and then turn a blind eye to it. If anyone bothered mee too much I'd set em up for execution but commute their sentence. Every once and a while I'd make some minimal token effort to gather some bit of intel or take a prisoner and point to that as a measure of our success.

I'd prolly be fired or killed myself after a while.

Man what a bleak scenario. I think I'd probably follow along with Jeffry H. but the probably eventually commit suicide before they could throw me in the brig.

I go read Paths of Glory (or watch the movie made from it starring Kirk Douglas), which posits a far more interesting - and consequential - circumstance than this.

Besides, are you commander of the regiment? To what degree are your superiors aware of the "fraternization?" They must have some idea, and, of course, spies are everywhere. If you tolerate - or even participate in - what's going on, your butt is almost certainly going to be burnt bacon.

You do your duty as assigned. You maintain discipline and put your command in fighting condition, then fight as ordered.

A silly thread, herr "SS Hauptsturmfuhrer," almost as silly as your online moniker.

But I did like "Gran Torino," not for the pro-violence message your sig appears to impute to it, but for the noble, anti-violent humanity that seeps out of so many of Clint's self-directed efforts. Remember that Walt was unarmed at his demise, except for his arsenal of heroism, dignity, and deep caring for those he had learned to respect and love.

Well given some of your posts of late, Perturabo, I find that statement a little on the bizarre side.

The guy posted a hypothetical question. Some funneh answers were given and some straight ones...I can't for the life of me find anything "disturbing"...although I will hold my hands up and admit mine was a bit on the raw side...so to any Frenchies out there...no offense...it was tongue in cheek.

This thread has already made it's way into the toilet so I reckon we just let it move on through the sewage system to join the rest of the unwanted sludge.  I'll try to keep any threads I start only talking about game titles or the evils of violence and war.  Maybe I'll even make one about how evil the nazis were.
