motnahp -> AI Pitching Management Questionable (6/14/2009 2:32:10 PM)

Converted an existing assn from 1.72 to 1.75 during the 4th season. It's an MLB career mode assn. No major problems noted with 1.72, but 1.75 has brought with it some ugly and familiar issues.

As another poster mentioned, ten-man pitching staffs are not enough in the modern era. I am attaching three pitching line scores. Please note that I am playing with actual stadiums, 35-man rosters and real MLB players. For what it's worth, one game was played in a dome, one had a 4MPH wind blowing in, and the third had no wind at all.

In another game, the AI allowed a starting pitcher to go the distance and allow 57 runs! This is frustrating! I'm tempted to re-install 1.72 over 1.75 and see if it works any better.

...and the other one:

....oh, what the heck, here's the other one. No wind in this game, either, unless you count the sound of exasperation coming from my mouth when I saw the score scroll across the bottom of the screen.

Hmm that is bizarre, I have never seen it nor can I duplicate it. What exact settings did you choose when you created that Association? I seem to remember an old issue with using "in-season ratings changes" did you choose that setting?

Totally bizarre, hopefully we can figure this one out quickly, that would drive me crazy [:@]

Nothing unusual at all. Single-player with finances, injuries, modern closer, and in-season ratings changes ON. Early import OFF.

The third example above was caused by the Yankees not having enough "decent" starting pitchers. I went into their minor leagues and changed one of their AAA guys from reliever to starter. I then did an AutoAdjust on their roster. The AI then exchanged Adkins with that guy.

As for the in-game pitching management, it appears as if the AI is over-reacting to the "tiredness" levels of the relievers, keeping some pitchers in the game far too long.

Once upon a time I had this same issue and you solved it back then by changing the default number of pitchers from ten to eleven. For the team I'm running in this same assn, I'm using eleven. All of the AI teams are going with ten and some are suffering from it. I'm sure I've had more than just those three anomalies. I just happened to have caught those three while they scrolled on the screen.

Thanks for any assistance or advice.

There's a converse to this. In my 2005 association, the AI has replaced a starter EARLY, like in the 4th inning, even when the guy has allowed no runs. This has happened in two instances, with the score being 0-0. No pinch-hitter or injury event intervened -- the guy was just replaced. Odd.

Are you interested in trading him to me? I'll give you Steve Adkins in return. My guy lasted 429 pitches and nearly half of them were strikes![:D]

Let me add another situation that is common.  If a team has mostly low endurance relievers and the starter gets injured whoever is last ends up pitching the rest of the game.  Here is an example I just saw:  starter injured after 1/3 of inning and replacement reliever only pitches 2/3 of inning.  Next pitcher goes 2/3 of inning followed by 1/3 of inning.  Final pitcher goes 7 innings.  All 4 relievers are now completely exhausted.  Now, I've been playing with fatigue settings but mostly for batters.  Can someone else confirm this behavior?  This is a 2004 league.

Additonally, I think if a pitcher gets injured it is almost always in the first inning for a starter or the first inning for a reliever.

motnahp ...

Do you have any Madden game in your hard drive, the code has an unbelievable way emerging into PS07 to play out the score ... ...

[;)] just kidding ... but I had never had those kind of scores, only once or maybe twice did it occur over 20 runs ... there's definitely something wrong in your settings, especially having several games like that ... even had Shaun stumped ...

Let me know if you founf the solution ... That would definitely cause me nightmares [:@]!!!
