RobertT -> Pacific war games (5/29/2002 8:52:31 AM)

Hi, I posted this in what may have been the wrong forum, so I'm trying it here as well, Sorry for the redundancy.

I played "War in the South Pacific" some years ago, then bought and played Pacific War when it first came out, and loved playing them both. I still play Pacwar from time to time, but have longed for a new Grigsby game to fulfill the potential that was left untapped by these games. Having recently found Matrix and registered, I am amazed that there are several new games out there I was unaware of. Actually, I'm confused too. Could one of you fine players please provide some sort of order to the Pacific war games and when they have (or are expected) to become available? Some insight into their nature would also be welcome, i.e. does the game lean more toward strategy like PacWar, or have more tactical considerations as in WITSP. Sorry for such a rudimentary question, but I want to buy a game asap and just can't tell which is which and what they offer. Thanks a million for your time, Robert

I answered you PM with:

War in the Pacific is not out yet - it will be strategic /operational in scope. THere is a webpage for it that you can get to from the development link.

Uncommon valor is an operational treatment of teh south pacific campaign. It is NOT tactical - you don;t command aircraft carriers you give orders to task forces and the commanders carry out missions, you are like Ghormely, commander the SWPAC operations. IT has a webpage to at our Games page. The forum has many after action reports from players and dicussions of various aspects of the game folks like and dislike.

Bottom line is, if you want a game that lets you play the entire campaign and plan operational aspects, the game is likely for you. It presnts you information that the overall commander would know and decisions he would have had to make.

IF you want to shift carrier planes form the hanger to the flight deck, or assign specific strikes to specific targets, then the game may frustrate you, as teh commanders under you manage that , sometimes doing very well, other times frustrating you by not acting in accordance to your wisshes becasue they don;t share all the info you have, or interpret it differently.

CHeck the websights and read the forum posts and you should be able figure out if the game is up your alley or not.
