I love Sink the Bismark (1960) and The Sand Pebbles (1966) but they were made outside the requested time window. I would think Sands of Iwo Jima (1949) would be my favorite from that time period. edit: 12 O'Clock High (1949) would also be high on my list.

Great flick, but the Padishah Emporer's, er . . . Jose Ferrar's character deserved a beat down at the end of the movie. Re: Casablanca. Love it when Bogie starts talking about the new German 77mm guns. What's 11mm between friends?

Old school war movies for that time period (30's-50's)? There are quite a few I think. Paths of Glory Run Silent, Run Deep Here to Eternity They Were Expandable The Story of G.I.Joe (The Ernie Pyle Story) In Which We Serve Hells Angels All Quiet on the Western Front That's just scratching the surface...

Paths of Glory, good movie.. I didn't think of that myself, but now that you mention it, seems obvious. Gone with the wind was '39.... Sands of Iwo Jima has to be #1, action in the North Atlantic i always likes and Turner had it on 2 weeks ago. Back to Bataan.. 30 Seconds over Tokyo was '44 so that will fit..
