Crazy Aido -> Off I go to Russia! (6/25/2009 11:14:13 AM)

So I decided to tke an SS infantry battalion on holiday to Russia, until I get my head around taking screenshots, you'll have to make do with my sparkling dialogue, also, I can't get my slimy paws on the internet where I live, so I have to transfer stuff to my hard drive. When I get that all worked out there might be pictures.

After I finish my thesis.

It occured to me that it would be fun to be back in the driving seat, commanding from the front and all that, directing the movements of a small battalion and (hopefully) working my way up the ranks. It would be a challange to my tactical skills.

However after the first game it occured to me that I'm not so great as I thought I was.

The first game was, (I think) a break through mission. Five objectives on the table, with an exit objective. I fart around at the wrong end of the table and leave myself too little time to go for the exit objective, so I go for the other objectives with gusto. A small town with two or three fifty pointers, then some 100+ objectives in a forested area on the left. Fearing for my trucks in the open, I head for the town. Bloody stupid really, I should have gone for the trees. Ah well.
Currently the battalion support weapons aren't all that fantastic, I understand they'll be weak, but they also don't have the firepower to be, well, supportive. They take some casualties. The Rocket mortars are brilliant and are really my best anti-armour weapon at this stage, saving the engineers at close range. My machine gun platoons also take a few knocks. In the last two turns of the battle I manage to sneak a platoon onto a 100 point objective, not my most noble victory.

Russians have plenty of armoured cars and light tanks. This coule be problematic later.

Next game is a literal blood bath. A Recon mission sees me headed for a club shaped hill with some hundred point objectives in the reverses. I'm accompanied this time by a recon company, which is quite welcome. I'm a little quicker off the blocks this time and by turn 3 or 4 I'm well on my way towards my first objective. Probing to the right of the hill reveals some fortified positions, but I sneak an armoured car through that spends the game chasing HQ's about. Once I hit the hill, it starts getting messy. The first objective, a forty pointer, is protected by engineers and light tanks(!). The engineer platoon and others leading the way get a bloody nose and can't contribute too much afterward, being knocked back to two SP's. They stay disrupted for two turns, but with some artillery and more infantry brought up I eventually drive them out. Movements in the rear are a wee bit disturbing. I fan infantry out into the forest to my left towards the second big objective while the original push keeps heading on towards the other. The russian engineers take some killing, there's more at the major objective, but when I eventually bring down some rocket artillery it quickly starts going my way. Just as I start to feel confident ALOT of light tanks and infantry start appearing, but by then I have most of the objectives, an armoured car has yoinked a 40 pointer in the open and I can pull back a little.

LESSONS LEARNED:
Support fire is really essential before an infantry assault.
Cover middle ground in trucks ASAP, otherwise I won't have time to capitolise later.

Well hopefully this means I will actually start learning my lessons from combat, as opposed to just thinking I have and getting my ass handed to me.
