Cajun Tifoso -> AE on a Mac (7/12/2009 5:47:49 PM)

I am thinking about pulling the trigger for a MacBook Pro for all sorts of reasons. I don't really play a lot of wargames anymore because of time and work, but I still do play WITP (and will play WITE when it comes out).

I know that BootCamp allows you to run Windows pretty well (from our IT guys).

Any idea about how AE would work on a Mac through BootCamp or other similar program?

Patrick

Terminus -> RE: AE on a Mac (7/12/2009 5:58:03 PM)

I *think*, but it will have to be verified, that AE has been tested on a Mac and found good.

(sorry, not much help, I know...)[;)]

BootCamp is a way for new Macs to load Windows OS of your choosing at boot. The WitP-AE (and almost any other program / game) will run good on it because the MacBook will then be plain and ordinary PC...[:)]

Thus MacBook with boocamp equals ordinary PC (i.e. then you don't have any connection to Mac at all)!

Zacktar -> RE: AE on a Mac (7/12/2009 5:59:00 PM)

I've been running WITP under Parallels with no trouble at all. I expect Boot Camp would work at least as well.

wgs_explorer -> RE: AE on a Mac (7/12/2009 6:52:01 PM)

I am currently running WitP on a MacBook Pro (2 years old at this point) and I can run it on BootCamp, Parallels and VMWare Fusion (another program like Parallels). All these options are fine. VMWare and Parallels allow you to run Windows while in Mac (splitting your RAM between the two) while BootCamp is booted into when starting the machine. Parallels and VMWare Fusion are each about $80 and BootCamp is free.

Hope this helps.

Bill

Cajun Tifoso -> RE: AE on a Mac (7/12/2009 7:05:43 PM)

Thanks for the advice. Only a true die hard fan would understand that if WITP and AE would not work, I would probably not get the Mac.

Thanks, again.

How are DirectX and OpenGL PC games on Mac running VMWare and/or Parallels?

On PC virtualizators ordinary programs work rather well but not games (i.e. 3d acceleration is not possible).

BTW, it is a bit better with games on Linux in virtualization (Wine for example)...

Crimguy -> RE: AE on a Mac (7/12/2009 10:21:38 PM)

3D acceleration is there in VMWare and Parallels, but it is pretty slow. I've run COTA, WitP, and HPS games without any degradation of speed. However, anything with whiz-bang graphics slows to a crawl. Take Command 2nd Manassas is too slow, and has some bugs. I've also noticed that AGEOD's AACW is too slow to play.

Be warned about one thing: WitP constantly seems to draw CPU cycles, even when it's not doing anything. It sucks your battery down pretty fast, no matter what OS you're using.

During testing I ran AE on an iMac for a time ...When we first started testing I tried using Parallels with AE...it worked, but not as well as when I decided to run it using BootCamp. When using Parallels I had issues with sound performance...under Bootcamp I had no problems at all.

Nikademus -> RE: AE on a Mac (7/13/2009 3:18:41 PM)

AE runs perfectly fine off of Bootcamp for Mac. Been using one for months with no issues.

aoffen -> RE: AE on a Mac (7/14/2009 12:25:27 AM)

Anyone have any idea on what memory you might need to allocate to the virtual windows machine (using Fusion 2) to make the program run smoothly? I have 4gig available with 1gig used by Fusion when its running. Under Bootcamp all the memory is available right?

AttuWatcher -> RE: AE on a Mac (7/14/2009 2:41:25 AM)

I don't see any reason why all memory wouldn't be available under bootcamp but don't quote me on that. I highly recommend boot camp though. It has better performance, stability, and compatibility than anything else I've tried.

Hi,

I use bootcamp on my mac partly for work and partly for WITP. Bootcamp simply partitions your hard drive and lets you install windows on the new section of your hard drive. Therefore, windows has access to all your system resources.

I would think allowing 1 gig on a virtual machine would be fine. But i would go with bootcamp. In that way, you actually use all of that computer you bought for WITP AE.

wgs_explorer -> RE: AE on a Mac (7/14/2009 6:05:11 PM)

On my (old) MacBook Pro I have 3GB of RAM--the computer won't recognize any more, even though I have put 4GB in it--and I split it 50/50 between Parallels and Mac and things run fine.

One thing about running WitP under Parallels or VMWare Fusion: don't try to resize the Parallels/VMWare window while playing WitP. You'll end up with garbage showing inside the Parallels/VMWare window.

Spadowski -> RE: AE on a Mac (9/1/2009 9:33:11 AM)

Running Bootcamp myself and to be quite honest my Macbook (I have the white one) runs games as well as, if not better in some cases than my desktop.

WITP runs just fine. (In XP. If you use Vista, all bets are off.)

Wittmann30 -> RE: AE on a Mac (9/1/2009 10:47:23 AM)

Having a white Macbook C2D (4GB Ram) connected with an external display. Using Parallels now because i found out that Fusion doesn't stretch the game display of AE ( only showing 1024x768 with black bars left and right). Parallels stretch the game display to max :) All works perfect under Parallels, no crashes so far, sometimes some slowdowns in AE but which are very rare...

henri51 -> RE: AE on a Mac (9/1/2009 1:58:18 PM)

I am running AE on two Macs under Bootcamp and XP Pro, a 3 GHz quad Mac and a 3 GHz Imac, both with a 24-inch screen. The game runs perfectly well, as well as many other games like he whole Total War series, mny of the recent Matrix games, Hearts of Iron III, World of Warcraft (which I usually play on the Mac)etc. I have yet to find a game that will not work. Under Bootcamp, the Mac IS a PC - Bootcamp is only the interface for the Mac peripherals (mouse, screen, etc).

So go for it, but if you use an emulator like Parallels, expect some slowdown.

Henri

The Gnome -> RE: AE on a Mac (9/2/2009 6:57:48 AM)

I run AE using VMWare, just make sure you have more than 2GB of ram

Oliver Heindorf -> RE: AE on a Mac (9/2/2009 8:08:40 AM)

13" mac book late 2007 here - runs ok, es what crimguy said, the fan is always on.......

soeren01 -> RE: AE on a Mac (9/2/2009 11:41:23 AM)

Anyone tried the SunVirtualbox yet?

Crimguy -> RE: AE on a Mac (9/2/2009 2:36:50 PM)

Not yet.  I have the latest beta of virtualbox on my pc running a couple linux distros.

VirtualBox on PC can't simulate DirectX for it's virtual machines (i.e. you have Windows host PC and virtual Windows machines).

Don't know about that capabiliy for VirtualBox on Mac.

I do use Sun VirtualBox for long time on my home and work PC's and have many TEST Linux and Windows distributions one of which is Windows7 (better to test in virtual environment than in real world [;)])...

nope. mistook an old thread for a new one.

Already gave my two cents.

Swayin -> RE: AE on a Mac (9/2/2009 7:27:22 PM)

It should be golden ... I might try the same thing on my MacBook Pro just to test it.

Barneyrubb90 -> RE: AE on a Mac (9/2/2009 9:05:32 PM)

Been running on my PC when at home and using parallels on older Intel based Mac Book Pro when on the road. No real issues just the screen is much smaller but that is a laptop issue. I usually run in full screen mode in parallels and try not to have much else going on but have not noticed any issues. I switched to the Beta over the weekend and have been able to transfer my ongoing game back and forth between both machines with no issues.

Captain57 -> RE: AE on a Mac (9/2/2009 11:26:06 PM)

I use a 13" MacBooK Pro. I'm running WitPAE with both patches under parallels. And yes, just like all the other Macs, it runs just fine for me. For 3D work, you need boot camp, but for superior wargames like this, go Mac.
