starsis1 -> Video problems (7/13/2009 3:19:15 AM)

Hi. In preparation to the release of AE, I have installed WITP on my newer laptop - Lenovo T61 running XP with NVidia Quadro NVS 140M video card - since my older Toshiba with WITP installed would not be able to handle AE. After the install, I patched it all the way to 1.806. Everything went fine until I loaded one of the scenarios - the main screen area does not display correctly - i see the icons denoting bases but can not see the map - in fact, after loading the scenario for the first time, i still saw the image of the scenario loading screen. At the same time, mini-map and lower portion of the screen display correctly. If i move around the main area, it gets more and more jambled. I was not running any other apps at that time...

I have downloaded the latest video drivers and latest Direct X just in case but it did not help. My display is set to 1400x1050 btw. Any help/suggestions woudl be highly appreciate. Thank you

WITP should set resolution to 1024 x 768... if it does not, all kinds of unpredictable things could happen (if it runs at all).

Just to make sure of something obvious: you HAVE tried rebooting, right?

Otherwise: the usual warning apply, i.e: some people have had problems with the latest version of DirectX with VISTA...

EDIT: see other recent threads about video problems with VISTA... they appear to be pretty common... try using Windowed mode to see if that works.

WITP did set resolution to 1024x768 (at least it looked that way). I did reboot :) and I am using XP. Both full-screen and windowed mode had the same issue. Thx

Also, as per recent posts: make sure you are not running multiple copies of the video driver (which can happen for strange reasons).

yeap, did that too

Do you have a lot of programs running in the background?  They can use up the Windows handles and cause display problems on WitP.

Does your old Toshiba laptop have a miniscule amount of RAM or something?  AE will run on any computer that will run WitP as long as you have enough RAM.  Some playtesters have managed to get it to work with as little as 512MB, but it works much better with 1GB or more.

Actually, you don't need much to screw things up... the one that got me was a "simple" screensaver: SETI@HOME... it would calculate stuff for the SETI program, but it would suck up all available memory (even though the program was rather small in of itself, the numbers it was crunching were large)... this messed up WITP severely, and i suppose if something similar was running in the background (there are number of these "screensavers") you could get severe problems.

Another thing that occurs to me is possible improper patch procedure:

it should be base installation (WITP ver 1.0 up to ver 1.802)

THEN

patch with 1.804 COMPREHENSIVE

then

patch with 1.806 REVISED.

Some folks have patched with 1.804 (noncomprehensive) and similar problems have come up, iirc.

EDIT: Corruption of the game files during the patch procedure is also a possibility... i'd recommend the deinstall completely then reinstall as above route.

Thx everyone. My older laptop had 1Gb of RAM while newer one has 2Gb of RAM yet the older one has no problem running WITP. I made sure not to run anything else and even went as far as hacking my registry to increase GDI handles by 50%. Based on the GDI handle count, there should have been enough - WITP was using about 6.5K and i had total of at least 10K. I did go from 1.0 to 1.804 directly and I will try to re-install WITP again tonight (thx, rtrapasso)

Come to think of it, i did patch from 1.0 to 1.804 COMPREHENSIVE and then 1.806 incremental... will try re-install anyway though

Strange things can sometimes happen during a patch and things can go wrong...

Let us know if this fixes the problem!
