Noakesy -> Can't find multiplayer games... (7/13/2009 11:55:40 AM)

I've tried playing this a few times with my son, and on a couple of occasions it works fine. Much better to play against a human as opposed to the AI (same as with most games I'm sure). However, we often have trouble starting up a game. We chose either TCP or the other one (sorry, can't recall it), put in the IP address for the person hosting, but then find we can't actually find the game. Seems to be found eventually on a couple of occasions. Any ideas what we might be doing wrong?

Hmm that's an odd one Noakesy.  You'd think that any troubles encountered would be repeatable.  Makes me think it's something that has the possiblity of working somethings and others not.  Like an internet connection.  Not saying that's it but certainly a candidate.  What bandwidth connection do you have?

Between the two connections go for the one that is labeled as "slower but better connection" or whatever it says.  The other option you were referring to is UDP.  If I'm not mistaken TCP is the slower more stable one.

In the meantime I'll see if anybody else has any ideas you can try.  Will post back here if we think of any.

Thanks, it could be internet speed, but once we are connected the game runs very smoothly, and I assumed that any issue with the connection would be shown there too. However, thanks for your comments, any help gratefully received!

Cheers

I've played CC long enough (not as long as some) to have experienced it under dial-up (56k) which is a pretty common connection still.  You don't really notice a lag once you're in the game but it's still there.  Occasionally you'll see it when the speed dips really low but you only really see it when connecting.

I asked the Steve and he agrees with me that it's likely due to sproadic connection or sporadic connection speed.  Here's what he said:

"Yeah – if it is sporadic then it has something to do with being able to find the other machine on the net.  Some sort of issue with routing between the two machines someplace, I would guess.  TCP is the better option in this case, but if it is in the routing someplace there isn’t much we can do about it.

To see if the problem is specific to TLD they could try pinging each other and see if that works.  If you can’t ping the other person’s IP address then TLD is not going to be able to see them either.

Also, try switching who is the host and see if the issue is just one way (i.e. one person can see the other, but not vice-versa), in which case I suspect that the unseen computer needs to have DirectPlay ports opened."

That's about the best we can do without more specific information about your set-up.  Let us know.

Great that's helpful. I did notice that if my son set up the game we had a little more success than I did. It's odd, we are both in the same house, with the same wifi router (and I'm only shelling out for one BB connection [;)]), and yet his machine seems to be much better at hitching up to the internet than mine. Odd (and no, I'm not putting it down to the fact that as his brain is in its early teens and mine some decades older that it's just me not being able to figure out how to use the pc properly [:)])

What method are you using to determine the hosts IP address?

Sorry Andrew, been away for a short while and only just seen this note. We are using our internal IP addresses, by using some website, should we be using the router IP address for our games?

Most websites will give you your external IP address

For internal IP address

Click start

Run

cmd

in the DOS box that opens type  ipconfig /all

this will give you your internal ip... something like 192.168.2.x

your sons will be almost the same with a different last number.
