Lehnardtsson -> Quick AAR with Italy and observations (7/20/2009 4:49:23 PM)

I bought the game ASAP and made a test with Italy (because of its limited scope but interesting possibilities : Yougoslavia, Greece, Afrika). Difficulty level is medium.

I concentrated most of my armies on the Yugoslavian border, not in Albania because I was afraid of potential lack of supply (I did not clearly read the rules). I declared war soon.

It took me until February 1940 to annex it because of poor weather and difficult terrain, especially with all my troops coming from the north.

Then I invested a lot in artillery, planes and strategic movement capacity and sent most of my troops in Lybia.

I did not want to fight against Greece because of the terrain. I remember doing poorly in Strategic Command 2 or Commander Europe at war.

I wanted to join Germany in February but I did not find the way to do it, so I waited until I got an event in march of april, then my troops advanced in Egypt and cut off Mersa matruth and the whole British army, but then I was lack of supply. I wondered why but I saw quickly why : In fact the French took Tripoli, because I thought they would never attack so I just let a small garrison.

So I had to create a new convoy from Italy to Tobruk to continue my advance (it is unfortunately not automatic)…I advanced just in front of Alexandria and Cairo…. I think I will take them before the end of September 1940.

However please note that Germany in level “easy” (+ 50% PP) is still fighting France in July…….

Furthermore the French are just in front of Turin because I limited the Italian troops on the French border because any gains would be limited. I am getting help from the Croatian (country was created by Germany even if I took it alone => weird).

I got several events to decide wether to develop fleets and focus on land, I choose to increase my fleets.

The “Maria Regina” was indeed leading in Mediterane. I have some battles but I have much more fleets than my competitors.

I took Malta in june with a lot of naval artillery and bombing.

I did not notice any friendly event after this victory.

I have a very big army in AFrika, I master the sea, so supply is guaranteed, then I hope to continue til Iraq.

Next time I will invade Greece and perhaps Turkey to make my “Roman Empire”.

My remarks :

-It is boring to have to see naval battles of German fleets when I am not a part of the alliance. BTW if I decided to set 0 second for battle screen it is boring to have to click on “auto fight” of “next” to continue to the next battle, I wish it would all be done automatically to let me go to the toilets or do something else instead of having to stay in front of my computer clicking on these buttons.

-Same for production figures, I have to click to continue even if it is almost the same every turn.

-I don’t care to read all foreign events

-It is not easy to read troops strength and which unit you can move or resuply and so on, you have to check some “dots” but it is “heavy” I mean when you have a lot of units it is not clear and easy to get.

-Deploying troops is not as easy as in SC2… you have to click on “deployment” then select an unit, then clicking and “deploy unit” and do it for every unit…..

-Same for fleets and moving fleets

- A surrounded unit can move strategically => weird!!!

But it is a great game!!!

Small remarks : (easily moddable)

-Deadly bombing, I am often loosing a lot of planes.

-General map is nice but could be better : I mean some coasts are not correct, some terrain are lacking (just look at the French Vosges or Ardennes, they are lacking), well it can be easily improved.

-More events would be appreciated

For your next swing through I can recommend the USSR as the only country the human controls. I am having a ball in the south, battling the Allies, and waiting to see if Germany has ambitions my way. The Allies objected to my attack on Greece and declared war on my Soviets. These are very brave, loyal Allies, but I think they have a more deadly enemy than the Soviets to handle.

It is indeed a great game, and all credit is due to a great bunch of developers, who have slaved away at this release. You can count on good support!

Finally Alexandria and Cairo have fallen in october, Germany is still fighting in France!!!
My fleet was utterly reduced, I do not really know how, but I am less proud now :(

I will test Russia next time could be interesting indeed

Most probably British airattacks...

I am advancing in Iraq slowly during december 1940 due to long distance supply....I had to declare war on Greece because this event give benefits to me...
On the other side Germany is preparing to attack russia, the eastern minors joined the Axis......

By march 1941 Iraq and Greece have fallen, we started war against Russia... however it takes me a lot of time to get back my troops from Iraq. I do not want to attack Persia because of the terrain (mountains mainly)

The supply rule is a bit annoying you really have to get from cities to cities during your conquest, no way to invade trough plains, you are obliged to get some cities to get supply.

At the same time Turkey declared war on the Axis [&:]

I remember that controlling a port was rather crucial for the Allies in Europe to be able to continue their fight. I am happy to see that this game takes logistics into account, it adds realism. Take for example, the effort used to take Cherbourg in Normandy, and also the campaign to control the approaches to Antwerp's port in 1944.

Mike Parker -> RE: Quick AAR with Italy and observations (7/21/2009 2:20:15 PM)

For the Italian Navy.  I have had luck with putting them ONLY in the one sea area that is adjacent to the Italian ports and Tripoli and massing there.  You can usually engage the allied navies there on equal footing and I get many fewer air attacks it seems.  Also pull your fleets into port before you go to war.

Lehnardtsson -> RE: Quick AAR with Italy and observations (7/21/2009 4:52:22 PM)

War is Turkey is tough, many replacements for them a bad terrain.
In Russia, the germans are avdancing quickly but in the south where there are only Romanians and me, Russia is doing well because we do not have panzers... I tried to encircle them with infantery but the encircled me!!!!!
