I know you said books and there have been numerous good ones recommend by the group. But don't forget about on-line sites for stories and other information related to the war in the pacific. Check out the thread started by M10bob in the Scenario section called Research site, etc. There are some great sites under that thread placed there by numerous people.

I've just started reading Shattered Sword: The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway by by Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully. It came out in 2006 and has won a bunch of awards. It's ironic how the IJN who first used the doctrine of massed air power (e.g. the attack on Pearl Harbour) suddenly and inexplicably disperse their forces across the entire northern pacific with no mutual support. Too bad [:D] The authors do try to explain Tokyo's vile politics of the time, and their quote from Sun Tzu is very appropriate: Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.

For the late war period I really liked Retribution by Max Hastings. In addition to the US campaign it also covers the Burma offensive, Soviets in Manchuria, and the war in China.

MUST READ: Tameichi Hara, Fred Saito, and Roger Pineau: Japanese Destroyer Captain: Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Midway - The Great Naval Battles As Seen Through Japanese Eyes.
This book takes you - aboard a jap destroyer and alongside of ships such as Yamato - through almost the entire Pacific War at sea.

DECISION AT SEA (Eric Hammel) (IIRC) an exploration of the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal (12-15 November, 1942). Companion piece to Starvation Island and Carrier Battles by the same author. Explores surface combat doctrines of both sides and how these surface battles were thus shaped.

I occasionally like to mull over stats and lists for WWII. I don't know if these count as good "reads" but my favorite Pacific War books that I hold essential for gamers are:

Warships of the Imperial Japanese Navy 1869-1945, by Jentschura, Jung and Mickel
Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War, by Francillon
History of United States Naval Operations in WWII: Vol XV Supplement and General Index, by Morison
Jane's Fighting Aircraft of World War II
Jane's Fighting Ships of World War II

I love reading these book threads,  but they've cost me some money the last few years. I keep ordering the dadgum books! "With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa" by E.B.Sledge is a helluva read imo.

You're not alone!!!! [:D][:D][:D] Retribution, Battleship Arizona and Resurrection are the titles that have arrived in just the last month. I'm still trying to finish up America's Hundred Thousand, Black Shoe CV ADM and Liberty and Tiranny (not WITP related) so I can get to the new ones. [X(]

Definately get Japanese Destroyer Captain.

Black Shoe Carrier Admiral by Lundstrom is also every bit as good as his First Team series.

While not only a PacWar book, Brute Force by John Ellis has some intersting info. Also, Richard Overy's Why the Allies Won is a great read. Finally, although it was written some 20 years ago for "modern" combat, Fleet Tactics by David Hughes will give you some food for thought when it is time to build your CV and surface/bombardment task forces.

There is a series called 'The Corp' by W.E.B. Griffen. It's fiction but it follows history faithfully starting with the China marines.
I found the story believeable(no Sgt. Rock taking out a bunker with a letter opener) and gave a good feel for people and the times.

1. "How They Won the War in the Pacific:Nimitz and his Admirals" by Edwin P Hoyt. Lyons Press, 2000.
2."The Second World War in the Far East", by H.P.Wilmott, Cassell History of Warfare,Cassell & Co., London, 1999.
3."The Pacific Campaign, WWII,The U.S.-Japanese Naval War, 1941-1945",by Dan van der Vat.Simon & Schuster, 1991.
4.For the first 2 years,'41-'43, "The Eagle and the Rising Sun"Alan Schom, W.W.Norton & Co., New York. 2004.

I have some 20-30 books on WWII, not all of them re the Pacific. Even with that, I still find new items I'd never heard of. Good reading.

I had to build a library out of my biggest spare bedroom to put my historical books in; the shelves they're on are 8' high, 8' wide, and take up an entire wall.  Half of the six shelves are taken up with Civil War books, the other half with WWII books.  Most are Pacific Theater and include most of the books already mentioned here, including the works of Dull, Hoyt, Bergerud and many others. 

Some not mentioned yet include "The Forgotten Fleet", about the Asiatic Fleet in early 1942 and the fate of the ships, "Storm Landings", describing the assaults on Central Pacific atolls, "At War with the Wind", about the kamikzaze campaign in 1944-45, "Bloody Peleliu", and "Fort Kamehameha", describing all the coastal defenses on Oahu.  I hope to find some more interesting titles when my wife and I travel to Hawaii next year too...

As a kid I was enthralled by Robb White's books.  In particular "Flight Deck."  Most of his stuff his out of print, I believe.  More's the pity.

Basil Collier, "The War in the Far East 1941-1945", Morrow, 1969. I don't know whether it's in print either. I got my copy when the Boston library was "making more room." Idiots.

For the war in Burma, highly recommend "Defeat into Victory" by Slim.
Not only the story of a forgotten and under resourced army, and excellent guide even today for personnel management.

Bergerud's Fire in the Sky is excellent. It is a follow up to the truly great "Touched by Fire" which nails the Infantry war including tactics, training, mindset, wepons, battles ect in the SW pacific. Covers strength and weakness of both sides and gives the Australian infantry their due. IT really is a tossup as to who had the best infantry. On any given day in 1942 the diggers may have been the best

Fully agree. Single best book on the thinking of the US and Japan after the first string of Japanese victories and what to do next. Detailed strategic thinking

Will anybody second "Goodbye Darkness" where William Manchester (McArther's and Churchill's bigrapher), revisits pacific battlefields and shares his experiences during the war ending his near fatal head injury at Okinawa

Goodbye Darkness: absolutely one of the best books on war I've ever read. Right up there with Philip Caputo's book on Vietnam (forget the name).  Both books represent the most personal accounts of war that you will ever read.

I just finished War Plan Orange by Miller - a surprisingly very good read (surprising because who would have thought the development of war plans could be made so interesting) - it is very well written and meticulously researched. Especially good for noobs (like me) because you get to understand why the Pacific war was fought the way it was, that helps in playing WITP and WITP AE.

The Army Air Forces in World War II is dry reading but its filled with information that puts some of the problems the US player has to deal with in the early war into perspective. Its 7 volumes and you might be able to find some of them in a good used bookstore or on line.

Another is a picture book set but it is some of the best air war pictures you will find. Title is Impact and its an 8 volume set.
