gbotto600 -> making airbases with the editor? (6/3/2002 5:21:43 AM)

this is a question for all you veteran mappers out there ;)

how do you make airbases? what do you use for the runway? what do you suggest for making good airbases?

Redleg -> (6/3/2002 6:41:52 AM)

I have seen everything from highways, dirt roads and clear grassy hexes. My personal favorite is gravel or concret used in conjunction with tall grass so the runway appears to be feathered along the edges.

In fact, I am just finishing a scenario with a runway of this type but it is winter so the feathering of the edges is done with snowdrifts.

It takes a bit of experimentation to get the proper look.

Even though there were a lot of dirt runways, I don't recal having made one like that but I suppose it would work.

It would, Redleg. I've done a few of them. It works fine. With the new terrain features and the addition of aircraft parked on the field, they can be made quite realistic.

is there a way you can put aircraft other than transport onto the arifields? or are transports the only ones?

:confused:

Redleg -> (6/4/2002 11:40:41 AM)

Gliders and transports are the only ones in the standard OOB set that I've ever gotten on the ground.

Keep working - I just saw the "impossible" yesterday. Fragar has a train that moves across the map.... and "they" said it couldn't be done!

Not with this crowd, Redleg. We are being outdone :eek:

Interesting! Was it the AI leapfrogging the rail cars around? Well if you border the rail lines with boulders terrain, then at least you can have the railcars not leaving them. Some waypoints then do the trick. Custom graphic for a complete train also might be possible. Itīs still single unit with big load capacity.

Ah..yes..the train stuff was one of Brents inventions some time ago. I also would like to see this Fragars scenario! :)

Fragar will undoubtedly see this thread (after I alert him).

The trains work fantastically well. Breakdowns cause problems as well as (i assume) a car being blown up.

But it is quite interesting and entertaining to watch the train chug along - heck, he even has the train making a turn on the track.

A talented designer! Watch for his work to appear at the Dirty Dozen..... I hope!

I borrowed his idea and used a moving locomotive for a snow plow the other day. Nothing so ambitious as an entire train. But it was fun to see the snow plow under AI control move forward into a T34. Great fun and a new dimension to SPWAW gaming.

Kudos, Fragar! Excellent work.

Fradar -> Trains (6/5/2002 4:20:54 AM)

Yes John the first scenario with 5 trains will be on the Dirty Dozen, even more so because I want it to be a cooperative design with you.
Watch out guys.

Redleg -> (6/5/2002 4:23:32 AM)

Fradar and Redleg collaborating on a scenario. Hang on for a wild ride.

This is going to work. Wait til you see it. It is fantastic.

ZeroAntipop -> (6/5/2002 4:55:09 AM)

How about trains moving into buildings?

Redleg -> (6/5/2002 5:22:14 AM)

That is more or less possible but when a vehicle moves onto a large building, the train or vehicle over-prints the building on the screen so it requires a bit of imagination.

Fradar -> Trains (6/5/2002 6:03:39 AM)

You are right John ! It works, but a little bit of imagination is required to see the train passing underneath the roof structure.

ZeroAntipop -> (6/5/2002 12:18:53 PM)

No, as in smashing into them.

Redleg -> (6/5/2002 12:23:02 PM)

I suppose that will happen often enough by accident.
