thunar -> RE: v AI (7/30/2009 8:12:04 PM)

Around the middle of December on my Grand Campaign game.

The AI is a crafty son-umma in AE!

I like how he loiters off Oahu just to see if anybody is going back to the West Coast for a day or two after 12/7.

There are tons of Subs to the North and East of PH that are causing some problems for me. I tried to send one of my lesser damaged BBs to Seattle and it got torpedoed just 100 miles off the Islands.

I was going to pull the Lark Bttn out of Rabaul, but apparently all the Aussie Cruisers don't have any sealift capacity, even when in Fast Transport TF?

I did get a little revenge by sending the Enterprise and Yorktown a few hexes NE of Wake and beating the stuffing out of the IJN Invasion force, unfortunately they unloaded enough of the SNLF to take the place.

Couple of questions: If I have ASW TFs on React at a Port, will they leave the port to prosecute contacts within their React range? Or do I have to set them on a Patrol?

Not sure you should ask that one in the naval thread

Can Devastator DB's carry 1000# bombs six hexes?  Lexington's DB's hit a retiring Wake Island invasion force at that range and her Devastator's were carrying 1000# SAP bombs.  The SBD's from Enterprise were carrying 500# bombs that same range, BTW.

Someone might need to check the ratings for the Devastator; if they can carry that big a bomb that far I might not want them converted to SBD's!

John... the scale has changed since WITP. It's now 40 mile hexes instead of 60 mile hexes.

Hi Andy,
Question on 12/8 scenario. Is AI any different, first landings didnt start appearing in PI or Makin until 12/11?

Andy Mac -> RE: v AI (7/30/2009 9:36:35 PM)

Depends can vary

Well duh I know that. I was just wondering what the range was where the Devastator would switch to 500 lb bombs, because as I pointed out, SBD's flying from the same hex were carrying the smaller bombload.

Dec 31th 1941

So far the fight is fairly balanced as well as can be expected for the "surprised" Allied forces. There are some major surprises in store for people though if they are use to the old script of the opening days of WITP.

Major Highlights

Manila was taken today. Thankfully I got most of the supplies out and used my PT for devastating interdiction attacks around PI for almost 4 weeks netting at the least 25 ships of all sizes, no warships though mostly PB E's and AK's but the supply had to be diminished.

Japan aggressive, They took Canton Island a week ago, complete surprise to me they skipped over and put the 58th Naval right smack on the beach and took it out from under me. I am retaliating as I write this. I just happened to have the 8th Marine Rgt sailing to Pago Pago at the time and is now going to be the first offensive punch of the Allies in the war. If anyone can do it the Marines can pull it off... I will use it to test small scale Amphib, I have my 3 CV's sailing to the area and a TF of 4 heavy cruisers with escorts for a surface fleet. I worry though because the Japanese can smell carriers from Tokyo and may want to make a fight for it. If they do I will withdraw I am not ready for the KB. I suspect it is around Truck.

I intend to make Fort Blair the "Guadalcanal" of the Indian Ocean. Nice fat base I am building there or hope to if they give me another couple of months. I also intend to make a fight at Rangoon I know it is most likely hopeless but I will put everything I can there to fight. Those typical Japanese Divisions once done with Singapore will be hard to stop no doubt but I will see. Fort Blair will be a key to keeping Rangoon I suspect or hope is more like it. But I intend to put the British/Commonwealth Navy to the test and fight for the base. The Betty's will be hard though so may be a fools gamble but one I am willing to make.

The air battles are not so one sided anymore, if you can get a decent aircrew into the sky they have a fighting chance. The lumbering Japanese Bombers without escort are tasty pickings. When where and how much to fight is all I think of right now. But with some good FG's like the AVG which I put under British command it is at least nice to sting sometimes if not win the air war.

The rest is typical I have moved all the supplies to Bataan I still barely hold Clark field and hope to make it longer than historical for Bataan I have no idea with this steamrolling Japanese Army/Navy ground forces though they are tough.

Canton

Mozo -> RE: v AI (7/31/2009 1:43:53 AM)

The Canton invasion must be hard wired - they did the same to me in Jan '42. I figure they have to try to supply it so I'm keeping my carriers near by and hitting their followup. I have 4 carriers now so I'm ready to take on KB this far away if they show. I'm thinking my damaged CVs will make it to Pago Pago, and they'll never make it back.

Scott_USN -> RE: v AI (7/31/2009 1:52:35 AM)

Ahh that is a good plan actually. I am gunshy with the KB though I don't know your right though need to fight them sooner or later. and your good bases are much closer than Truk. I guess they could limp back to Einewotok or whatever it is spelled but they would be a long ways from a good port. :)

Scott_USN -> RE: v AI (7/31/2009 4:47:04 AM)

And all of the month gone because I can't stand the air group withdraw I think it is annoying and the most annoying thing in the game. Don't even give me airgroups if they are going to be gone in weeks to a couple of months.

dr. smith -> RE: v AI (7/31/2009 4:48:54 AM)

Playing 3 day turns, now on 12 Dec

Previous reports have the AI sending unescorted bombing raids to PI - on 10 Dec I had similar:

     G4M1 Betty x 6

Allied aircraft
     P-40E Warhawk x 23

Japanese aircraft losses
     G4M1 Betty: 1 destroyed
==========================

Same on 11 Dec, then matters changed on 12 Dec, as first Nates from Vigan joined in, then got some Zeroes from Taiwan escorting, the last time with almost 40 A6M2s:

     P-40E Warhawk x 18

Japanese aircraft losses
     A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed
     Ki-21-Ic Sally: 8 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
     P-40B Warhawk: 1 destroyed
     P-40E Warhawk: 5 destroyed
----------------------------
Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Manila at 79,77

Japanese aircraft
     A6M2 Zero x 39
     G4M1 Betty x 24

Allied aircraft
     P-40E Warhawk x 10

========================

Many more raids like the last one, won't have many P-40s left in Luzon.
