One of the earliest differences i have seen is in the loading time between WitP and WitP:AE....AE now loads up in a few seconds whereas WitP could take a lot longer to get to the main screen..woohoo [:D]

It's the dynamic image loading.  WitP loads every image it might ever need at start and AE loads only frequently used images and some stuff needed to start the game.  Everything else is loaded when needed.
