Pacific (June 23rd - September 20th 1943)

I have been quite busy in recent months but it is time pick up the story. The progress in this game has been ongoing allthough same cannot be said about allied offensives so far.

Personally I think the best way to get you updated is simply to through theatre by theatre with short recaps.
Actually not that much has been happening. Dave hasn't launched offensives and things has been somewhat of an stalemate with few exceptions.

Ok.. enough of that and here is the summary of the situation around:

Northern Pacific

Quiet. Allied LBA's dominate the skies above Dutch Harbour and Umnak Island.

Japanese do not seem to have that much there in terms of infantry so my estimate is that he has his forces stacked around Adak Island and further towards Japan.

China

The ceasefire is ongoing. No action to report.

This ceasefire will hold until I will break it. Meaning that japanese wohn't move further unless chinese armies launch offensives here.

Very much undecieded when or whether to break this thing later on. The supply situation overall here is very poor.
Now I'am just rebuilding corps units which have taken quite a beating in this PBEM.

CenPac & South Pacific

Allied forces have secured Fiji's, Samoa's and Noumea.

There has not been much there in terms of an infantry.

Currently the focus is to secure New Hebrides and build up bases here. We have been bombing Efate and Luganville lately and the enemy airfields are closed.

I spotted CV Junyo about a month south of Solomon's but Dave opted not to intervene with our Noumea operation.
I conducted couple of carrier raids few weeks back close to Lunga and Tulagi. The result was quite a few japanese lba aircraft downed and few merchants sunk.

This revealed that he is building up the airfields around Solomons though and the allied signit has shown heavy volume traffic at Rabaul and Truk.

We will conduct few ampbitious landings in next few turns.

I must say that the logistic about the offensives have set me back a bit. I was not aware how much supplies and fuel we need and allied side do need a lot of them.

My mistake and it takes time correct this. The hingsight is always ideal and this shows here.

India & Burma

We had few quiet months here but I have conducted large scale lba bombing runs againts central burma in past weeks.

It is really hard to close down airfields and he has many mutual supporting ones here.

The bad thing about these is that he has won 1,5 : 1 odds in terms of aircraft lost here. Thus letting me to believe his pilot pools are propably in very good shape!

Overall Japanese have lost +8000 planes in this PBEM so far but that does not show up in terms of gameplay.
I have been reluctant of launching the ground offensives here yet. Instead I have been moving more units into frontlines.

To be honest very much undecieded how to deal with this "mess" in Burma. We need to dislodge the enemy here but the big question is how are we going to achieve this.

Allied intel has shown that Dave has shipped ground reinforcements here. How much? Well, I really don't know as of yet.

Hey,

Good to hear you are still playing. I thought you gave this one up.

One comment about Burma. There is only one thing in Burma of any significance to you-the oil production at Magawe. So focus on bombing out this resource. Otherwise there is no need to worry about it. Burma provides no other resources to your or him. The only other reason to fight for it is to get supplies to China, and has given you a free truce in China so your don't have that to worry about. Time to think about going "around" Burma. Perhaps way around-like an invasion of Java. You get a foothold in Java or on the mainland near Singapore and he is going to come tumbling out of Burma fast.

Couldn't agree more. Worry him in Northern Java or Sumatra and go in with great strength. If you get a foothold in either place you can disrupt his ops at Palembang even without taking it. As far as I am concerned Palembang is crucial to IJ survival. If I were him and you landed in either place, I'd get several divisions there as quick as I could to force you off.

aztez -> RE: September 1943 (6/25/2010 3:05:46 PM)

crsutton: Thanks. No, I don't tend to give up and 100% committed to see this through.

There are still oifield running at Magwe. I think it still has 91 unit production. I take your advice and bomb this production to dust.

The "operation oil" will commence next turn. I actually now have few P51's arriving into Burma front.

They have only 50-60 exp. pilots put that needs to be enough. Damn, I should have focused on the pilot training from the start.

China is at peace and it seems that the supplies don't grow nor does it reduce there.

I like the DEI plan. Only thing is that I need to have carrier support and these ships are committed elsewhere. Not too eager to start moving them to other side... at least not yet.

Dave made an good comment regarding Burma. He has lost a lot of aircraft BUT these have been mostly on "defensive losses" so many of his pilots have bailed out and survived since they are flying above the friendly base.

I will post an pic regarding Burma in the next update.

offenseman:
Thank you! Good to be back.

I will be starting my summer vacation after next week. Traveling a lot but you wohn't miss a thing since the turn pace will crawl during these days.

Personally I like the Sumatra option. The problem is as stated above the lack of carrier support. Allthough with huge invasion TF's I could take the losses and still pull it off I guess.

Lets just close the oil business at Burma and than really start thinking this option! Good strategical advice and very tempting indeed!

aztez -> RE: September 1943 (6/25/2010 3:07:10 PM)

Southern Pacific (september 21st - 22nd 1943)

Lets start with pic from southern area. (Next update will focus on the burma as well)

Allied troops landed at Efate on 21st. There were only +1000 enemy troops defending the base so our forces quicly overrun the them.

Now we will start building this base up immediately. There are 4 Seabee units already loaded and will arrive shortly.

There also invasion forces heading to Luganville and Tanna. These landings will take place within next couple of turns.

There should be not much in terms of lba resistance since we basically have closed the airfields.

These invasions are supported by allied carrier power. We shall see whether the KB shows up. Personally I very much doubt this. I think his ships are at Rabaul area though.

As said I can say that this is eating up a lot of fuel and supplies. Very much underestimated this and had I played vs AI I would not have made this mistake.

Things are starting to look up though so the hammer will move forward.

aztez -> RE: September 1943 (6/26/2010 8:06:36 AM)

Burma (september 23rd - 24th 1943)

Allied recon showed 91 Oil units and +20 refinery units operational at Magwe.

Following this there are now large raids scheduled againts Magwe starting on 25th of september.

I will launch from Akyab, Cox Bazaar's and Chittagong. The main bomber is gathered at Chittagong since it is the only level 9 airfield operational.

Akyab, Cox Bazaar's and Imphal has all level 8 airfields operational now.

The sweep missions will run at 20 000 feet while bombers along with designated escorts will fly 15 000 feet alltitude.

Fingers crossed... at least it is going to be bloody mess yet again here.

South Pacific (september 23rd - 24th 1943)

The allied invasion TF's are closing in at Luganville and Tanna.

No sign of enemy naval forces at least not yet. I will however increase the naval search missions around this sector.

Both of these bases should fall quickly since there are only minor garrisons in place there.

We have also an amphibitous TF on its way and heading towards Koumac.

Rob Brennan UK -> RE: September 1943 (6/26/2010 3:27:09 PM)

Welcome back , Never doubted you'd given up the game (think i know you all too well by now [;)]). Thanks for updating the AAR as your insights will come in very handy when i actually start a PBEM GC (eventually). Your hindsight is my advice.

hummm . mid 43 and stalemate. Thats actually good to see as in WitP mid 43 could be the american steamroller clobbering the pacific islands. Nice to see a slower pace to the action.

As the others have advised re DEI.. go for Sabang. I love that base. but you will need really good LBA fighters to hold it. It's do-able with just the brit CV's imo too. Make the invasion force look like a Cape town bound convoy then dart east to sabang (maybe 3 turns travel time) you 'should' achieve suprise and if you hit hard enough and take support units (BF's etc) + buckets of supply. you can set this place up as a CAP trap and then He's got to come to you and then you'll start hurting his pilots. Basing some good british TB's there (don't forget the air HQ) may well deter any bombardments as a bonus.

anyhoo .. just my rambling thought process.

Have fun.

You should target oil or refineries but not both. Japan actually has a surplus of refineries so it is better to just hit oil. Knock out the oil in Burma and the refineries are useless since it is unlikely your opponen will ship oil to Burma.

aztez -> RE: September 1943 (6/26/2010 6:14:24 PM)

Rob: Yeah, it hasn't been "steamroller" game. That is down to Dave abilities in this game... and yes no way I'am going throw in the towel! [:D]

From now I steadily start to increase the "heat"... we are still +2 years from from the finish so no need to start doing suicidal things.

I thought you would be up and running with GC game already?

Sumartra / Sabang is possibility. There are two problems... RN CV's are in the pacific (I have lack of operational carriers due to early losses) and the lba pools for RAF aren't looking good. Neither in terms of pilots nor planes.

I have shipped some extra US ones into SouthEast asia since I do have more than plenty of them.

As always... appreciated.

crsutton: Correct. That is the idea. We knock out those +90 oil points and Burma will be wasteland after that.

Next turn should show how we are progressing. I have 400-500 aircraft participating in this assault againts Magwe.

If we get lucky who knows what is left after these bombing raids.

...in the end we knocked out 12 Oil resource points with these raids.

This actually marked the combat debut for Mustang and P40N fighters. Both of them left a lot to be desired for.

The sweep missions were set on 20 000 feet and escort /bombers flew in 15 000 feet. Our pilot experiece for fighters were between 45-75 air skills.

Now the show will go on... allthough I will rest my crews next turn.

CaptBeefheart -> RE: September 1943 (6/28/2010 8:10:50 AM)

Good to see you're still putting up the good fight. Sabang sounds like a good gambit. If you make progress there and then Singapore, he'll have to retreat from Burma (especially if you've obliterated his Magwe oil). I won't offer too much advice, but if your 4Es are suppressing airfields nicely, then you can do a lot of hopping rather than invading his strongholds. The first step would be to clear out the Solomons as you are doing and then New Guinea, then the DEI from the east. If you manage to make inroads on the DEI from the west as well, then all the better. Whatever you do, good luck!

Cheers,
CC

And severe storms. Also heavy fighter opposition will have an effect on bombing accruacy. You might hit the airfield for a raid or two with heavies to beat down the fighters, but the oil is the target.

aztez -> RE: September 1943 (6/28/2010 5:25:49 PM)

Commander Cody: Welcome. Yeah, no intentions of surrendering. Actually I'am moving more airpower to the frontlines.

Sabang does look intresting and there few other bases in Sumatra that are tempting. However I need reorganize my airforce once we get the objective done at Magwe.

The pilot experience is too low to my liking due to heavy airwar at Burma.

Solomons are definately on the list. You will see that Dave has substantial forces in place there. The first recon missions reveal this already.

Sardaukar:
I can guarantee that we shall see 1946 in this one. No matter what happens we will grind into bitter end.

bklooste:
Yeah, Thunderstorms. Actually seems that 9 times out of 10 it is Thunderstorms. Sometimes you just hate the advanced weather model.

crsutton:
Definately heavy CAP! I know has quite a few elite pilots at Burma. (exp. 80-90's).

Last turn saw 15 000 feet heavy bombing run againts the oilfields at Magwe. The losses were high but next turn we will make another run for them,

We did launch another large raid againts the oilfields at Magwe. This time opted to go in without sweep missions and opted to put up high number of escorts to fly with bombers.

There were also few smaller raids but they failed to anything worth of mentioning.

Last round we went in at 15 000 feet and knocked some oilfields out.

Next turn another round is ordered and we will fly at 10 000 feet.

I know substantial losses are to be expected BUT I think that this just needs to be done now and lets worry about else later.

If everything goes as planned we should knock 20-30 oilfields units again and thus it would leave him with something 30 operational ones.

That is enough and the business at Magwe oilfield can be concluded.

The whole above thing shows that fighters in escort missions don't do much in terms of protecting and shooting down enemy aircraft. Maybe something worth a look in future patches.

Keeping that in mind however I have opted to fly at 10 000 feet next turn with only escort missions. I rather have couple of large strikes than uncoordinated ones which maybe end up even worse.

Last turn we lost around +100 planes and enemy losses were 40-50 planes.

aztez -> RE: September 1943 (6/28/2010 5:27:42 PM)

Southern Pacific (september 27th - 30th 1943)

Allied forces capture Luganville on september 27th 1943.

Japanese launch couple of strikes againts our shipping at Luganville. The allied CAP shoot down some Zero fighters and enemy bombers.'

I'am not actually sure whether these enemy fighters were from lba or carrer based. I guess we shall see next turn what is he up to.

Considering he lost CL Kitakima and DD Akebono south of Tulagi... well I see no point of them being here "alone". Why would he sacrifice these ships for nothing. So, my money is that KB is not far off here.

I started to flew recon missions. The map below shows what was revealed.

bklooste -> RE: September 1943 (6/29/2010 2:35:43 PM)

Oil fields can wait a week or too .. get your bomers to recover and thin his air with some sweeps for a few turns then send your bombers in when his pilots all have fatigue..

aztez -> October 1943 (6/29/2010 5:35:23 PM)

bklooste: I did conduct an operational raids last turn. Now it is time regroup a bit.

The main problem with sweeping missions are that I have far too few skilled pilots in that category.

This is mainly due to the fact that I did not train each squadron individually when the game started. In personal reference I liked the training in classic witp better.

Burma (september 30th - october 1st 1943)

The allied airforce visited Magwe this turn too. We knocked out more of his oilfields at Burma.

The recon flights show just 40 operational fields at Magwe. This is good enough for the rest and regroup for a bit. I guess we achieved our goals but this airwar at Burma has been costly and bloody.

In past two days we reduced around 35-40 oilfields which is still fair enough. Sometimes you must take losses in order to gain the objectives.

Here is round up for last turns action at Burma...

aztez -> RE: October 1943 (6/29/2010 5:36:19 PM)

South Pacific (september 30th - october 1st 1943)

In the last update we made assumption that the sinking of CL Kitakami and DD Akebono would mean that KB is lurking nearby.

Well as it stands this is correct. The enemy carriers were spotted south of Tulagi in the end of last turn.

Instead of running like chicken I have ordered my carriers further into north and intercept these raiders. If Dave does not retreat well we will have one hell of an carrier clash in our hands.

The last pic will show the ordered allied route towards KB.

I know this is risky business but sometimes we must roll the dice. I know he can fly in 80-90 fighters and 50 bombers from Tulagi. In order to deal with this I have moved 60 allied fighters into Luganville and set them 100% LRCAP over the carriers.

Now lets keep fingers crossed that this time around we will prevail!

Oh and the last turn was not without action either. Dave sent some fighters and bombers in assaulting missions againts our carrier TF's.

This did not turn out too good for him...

I have triple checked all the squadrons. The assault distance is set maxium of 7 hexes for the torpedo bombers, dive bombers and escorts.

The torpedo planes will go in at 7000 feet while dive bombers will fly at 11 000 feet. Escorts and CAP do vary a bit.

As said unless he moves north than......

The air losses in your attacks in Burma are amazing.  Those veterans of his are doing a great job.  On the other hand, your 300+ Hellkitties are doing a great job protecting everything that is around them!  Nice assembly of firepower near Espirito Santo.  I've got a good feeling about that operation.

aztez -> RE: October 1943 (6/30/2010 5:54:36 AM)

crsutton: Thanks. The wishes could have gone better.

offenseman: Those pilots have shot downn vast number of aircraft. As for the operation... well did fight allthough things did not go as ordered.

Battle of Coral Sea (october 1st - 2nd 1943)

This will just an copy paste report from the carrier clash we had. I don't have the turn file yet and heading to work.

It did not go as planned though. Far from it since despite specific orders the carriers reacted. I know the leaders can do this and well they surely did.

aztez -> RE: October 1943 (6/30/2010 10:28:19 AM)

I will get the turn file back tomorrow most likely.

Dave stated that he lost +200 aircraft in this battle. No mentioning whether or not he actually lost any ships.

I will update the allied carrier situation once the turn file comes in. Overall I'am not too pleased how things played out.

FatR -> RE: October 1943 (6/30/2010 11:40:21 AM)

Well, unless FOW radicallly distorted the observed results of Allied attacks, Junyo and Unyo are likely gone.

Sardaukar -> RE: October 1943 (6/30/2010 1:27:46 PM)

I think you really decimated his carrier pilots....but I bet he has trained replacements. Allied damage control is in your favour, since hits seemed to be quite even.

veji1 -> RE: October 1943 (6/30/2010 2:28:45 PM)

As often the key is the second day. If you both get out of it as it is, he loses a couple of CVEs and probably one CV, maybe one more with Jap damage control. You lose a bunch of CVEs, probably one CV and have a few other CVs/CVLs damaged... That would not be a defeat, rather a bloody draw from a tactical point of view and strategically pretty even : you hurt his fleet somewhat, something he cannot recuperate from while you get more and more boats, but he slowed you down a bit.
