dr. smith -> So close - Sturgeon barely still a Virgin (8/3/2009 9:09:01 PM)

FYI: playing with allied subs automated, which means they take up patrols around Japan and Philippines. Unlike IRL, where they were used defensively against invasion.

Would have been quite the first kill for the Sturgeon (famous for its "Sturgeon no longer a Virgin" message, this is from 18 December:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Chiba at 115,62

Japanese Ships
CV Kaga
CV Soryu
BB Kirishima
CA Chikuma
CL Abukuma
DD Kagero
DD Kasumi
DD Arare
DD Tanikaze
DD Hamakaze

Allied Ships
SS Sturgeon

SS Sturgeon launches 4 torpedoes at CV Kaga

AND Sturgeon tried AGAIN:

Damn Mark 14 torpedoes... [:@]

And at least, the real commanders could disable the Mark VI exploder for direct contact detonation, and many did despite specific orders not to do so from the Navy. They would also doctor their reports, sometimes even write fraudulent ones, and exaggerate the tonnage of their targets to justify using more torpedoes. We are stuck with these faulty ordnance.

Oliver Heindorf -> RE: So close - Sturgeon barely still a Virgin (8/4/2009 6:55:25 PM)

I fired 40 Mk 14 Toprs so far, scoring one hit.

got some milk ?

But don't tell ComSubPac or the BuOrd that the damn torpedoes are faulty. They'll reply that YOU're faulty. And I am not kidding. Monty Python wouldn't do it any better if they could. [:-]

quote:

Blame for the inadequate weapon must be laid at the feet of the Bureau of Ordnance, which specified an unrealistically rigid magnetic exploder sensitivity setting and oversaw the feeble testing program. BuOrd hampered wartime investigation into Mark VI exploder problems by assigning the mechanism "secret" status, limiting knowledge of its inner workings to a few high-ranking officers, refusing to believe word of active duty sailors,[18] laying blame for failures on these very same men,[19] even deliberately mis-setting torpedoes to conceal defects.[20] Servicemen were forbidden to disassemble the exploder.[21] Additional responsibility must be assigned to the United States Congress, which cut critical funding to the Navy during the interwar years, and to NTS, which inadequately performed the very few tests made.[22] BuOrd failed to assign a second naval facility for testing, and failed to give Newport adequate direction.

Sub commander: 'Ello, I wish to register a complaint.

(The supply officer does not respond.)

Sub commander: 'Ello, Miss?

Supply officer: What do you mean "miss"?

Sub commander: I'm sorry, I have a cold. I wish to make a complaint!

Supply officer: We're closin' for lunch.

Sub commander: Never mind that, my lad. I wish to complain about these torpedoes that I was supplied with not half an month ago from this very ordnance warehouse.

Officer: Oh yes, the, uh, the Mark 14 torpedo...What's,uh...What's wrong with it?

Sub commander: I'll tell you what's wrong with it, my lad. 'E's faulty, that's what's wrong with it!

Supply officer: No, no, 'e's uh,...it's resting.

Sub commander: With all due respect, jackass, I know a faulty torpedo when I see one, and I'm looking at one right now.

Supply officer: No no he's not faulty, he's, he's restin'! Remarkable torpedo, the Mark 14 torpedo, idn'it, ay? Powerful propellant!

Sub commander: The propellant doesn't enter into it. It's stone dead.

Supply officer: Nononono, no, no! 'E's resting!

Sub commander: All right then, if he's restin', I'll wake him up! (shouting at the torpedo) 'Ello, Mister Polly Eel! I've got a lovely fresh juicy target for you if you'd blow up...

(Officer hits the torpedo)

Supply officer: There, he moved!

Sub commander: No, he didn't, that was you hitting the eel!

Supply officer: I never!!

Sub commander: Yes, you did!

Supply officer: I never, never did anything...

Sub commander: (yelling and hitting the exploder contact detonator) 'ELLO POLLY!!!!! Testing! Testing! Testing! Testing! This is your nine o'clock alarm call! Boom!

(Sub commander disconnects the Mark VI exploder, pulls it out of the torpedo and thumps it on the offier's desk. Throws it up in the air and watches it plummet to the floor.)

John Lansford -> RE: So close - Sturgeon barely still a Virgin (8/4/2009 8:13:47 PM)

Not until one of the sub captains reported a well documented and signed report involving him firing individual torpedoes at a cargo ship tied to a pier under perfect circumstances (less than 1000 yds range, target broadside and not moving, in a harbor, etc) did BuOrd start taking all the torpedo complaints seriously.  IIRC the captain fired nearly his entire arsenal of torpedoes at the cargo ship, reporting each miss, dud hit, low order detonation, etc, and included depositions from his exec and other officers saying the same exact thing about how bad the torpedoes were.

Even then it took a controlled test where a torpedo was fired into a cliff face and then retrieved before BuOrd realized how defective the weapons were.

And even then after Admiral Lockwood, ComSubPac, finally ordered the Mark VI detonators to be deactivated and tested, these were still defended tooth and nail by other flag officers like Admiral Ralph Waldo Christie, who believe the detonators were functioning and the high rate of duds were because of bad maintenance and men's incompetence.

What is it, then, if it is not dereliction of duty by these ComSubPac officers, namely people like John Wilkes, or James Fife Jr., or Robert English?

Really, just imagine what would have happened if ComSubPac would have been English during the whole war, and the onus of the blame for failure had still been placed on the shoulders of the Silent Service's men and officers. Japan might never have been smothered out of his oil and fuel resources at all.
