You have been bitten by the dreaded pilot bug. The pilot database can become full late in the war and the game responds by purging pilots willy-nilly from active groups. It is not unusual for the Japanese player to lose a third of his trained pilots when this happens. It's pretty devastating.

There is no fix I am aware of. The problem will not occur in AE, for what that's worth.

Will it happan once only?

Does it happan to the Allies?

Would "more dead" pilots prior in game prevent it?

Check the local bars a geisha houses. Look like your pilots went AWOL.[8D]

Q-Ball -> RE: WHAT IS THIS ??? WHY ?? NEED HELP ! (8/5/2009 7:24:13 PM)

My opponent and I avoided this in our PBEM in March of 1945, by setting a HR that capped the number of active A/C that each of us could have at one time (self policed of course). I was capped at 6500, and my opponent at 13,500 ( I am Japan). That avoided the problem. Not sure if that was the correct level, but it's hard to keep more than a few thousand A/C at the front, even if you are the Allies, you just run out of runway space.

In your case though probably too late; switch to AE.

PS: Yes, it does impact the Allies, but the impact is more on Japan, because the Allies can quickly refill their units with trained pilots, and you probably can't at this point

This is well known issue i think. Once all pilots slots in DB are used, computer purge them to find place for new ones. Could repeat if the numbers of pilots again fill the DB.
This helps to prevent or lesser the risk of it:
1. Do not overstack your units with surplus pilots - both sides!!
2. Lower numbers of airgroups - allies usually keep every squadron they could from Philipines, DEI, Malaya, China - IRL these squadrons were efficiently destroyed and only few survived - that could give you say 500 of free pilot slots - also both sides!!

An easy way to check how many pilots you have each day is to use WitPtracker in the section "summary".
With my opponent, we did the same.
I must never have more than 10500 pilots (jap), my opponent, 19500.
The data base able us to have 30000 pilots at maximum.

How do you reduse active aircraft number ??

I stop replacements.
I choose myself the groups i don't want to complete.
The allied player can also definitively disband Russian air group as on this mod it would madness for Japan to attack Russia.
And for Japan, there is a good news: all CV air groups will disappear with time [:@]

Cerix -> RE: WHAT IS THIS ??? WHY ?? NEED HELP ! (8/5/2009 11:56:46 PM)

But it will dispand it into air group and not be totally dispanded correct? How can this reduse pilot number ?

Perhaps it is a withdraw, i don't remenber;
i am talking of the case when the game ask you if you want the air unit to come back or not. In this case, you answer: NO.

I never use this technic because i may regret my choice later.

For exemple, i prefer to let my DB without any replacement (they remain with 1 or 2 planes and pilots per group); as the war is in progress, jap DB units are less and less interesting because of allied air superiority and very short range.
In this case, i can keep fighter units for defense and torpedo bombers against naval units.

But if at a moment and for any reason, if i have kept my DB units, i can recomplete them and use them at the cost of a reduction in planes and pilots of an other kind of air units (IJA level bombers, reco plane in China, transport plane, 1E torpedo bombers, ... and even fighters for a short laps of time).

You decide, you choose.

So apparently the "Pilot Bug" is something that can't be fixed? I'm sure that with AE out this title will not be a priority! I was conteplating buying this because of the price, but if it's broken and can't be fixed? Oh Well, moving along....

Yamato hugger -> RE: WHAT IS THIS ??? WHY ?? NEED HELP ! (8/7/2009 5:37:41 PM)

It can be fixed. But would require a data base change which would require game restarts (unless Joe made a utility program to change the current file save format from the old to the new which I used to do all the time back in my programming days).

Toby42 -> RE: WHAT IS THIS ??? WHY ?? NEED HELP ! (8/7/2009 6:51:31 PM)

I think that it should be fixed, then you have the option of applying the fix or not!!! First time potential buyers like me would be influenced by this (to buy or not to buy)!
