Because you're doing something Ahistorical - and you can do it because you do not having 'historical first turn' set to on. They're still surprised, but theyre a surprised task force setting out to sea, not a surprised bunch of sitting ducks. The other effects othe Dec 7th Surprise still apply, like weak CAP, ect.

I have an idea for a YouTube sequel to THE FINAL COUNTDOWN:

Lacking funds to send a full nuclear aircraft carrier back through time, the filmmakers settle for downloading a copy of WitP:AE to Bletchley Park on December 6, 1941.

Will Alan Turing be able to rig the code to run the game on a captured Engima machine? Will they be able to warn the Americans in time? Will they remember to turn on "Historical First Turn"?

Stay tuned!

If the US fleet had sailed out of PH to face KB, the BBs would have been sunk in deep water and lost forever. Ironically, the BBs being in port saved some of them since they were later repaired. KB would have taken more air losses though from alerted AA gunners.

I wonder… maybe more BBs would have sunk in deepwater. But the Pacific Fleet would have had sea-room to maneuver, and not been sitting ducks as they were at PH.

On the other hand, in Pearl half the BB's couldn't be hit by torpedoes, being sheltered by other ships, and the rest could be hit from one side only; at sea, they could have been targeted by coordinated "anvil" attacks which would negate much of the effect of maneuvering. Remember, no CAP over Pacific Fleet.

Force Z had loads of sea-room.

[:D] That pretty much ends that discussion.

Yep, I've been sunk in deep water myself... methinks. [sm=Crazy-1271.gif]

Are you playing against AI?

The reason I ask is that the DEFAULT a/c setting for the KB is port attack.
When you execute the turn that is all the AI can do on turn 1
