Looks like the last word is mine (relax).

I finally figured out how to use the Patrol Zone option. And I must say it is a very nice feature. And it does make my argument about the retirement default kind of mute.

Exactamundo!!!

Sorry I was late to the party - I had the same issue 15 months ago - but found the same solution sometime thereafter - patrol zones obviate the need to worry about retire/do not retire for submarines. Actually I set my submarines to proceed to their home port - and then set the patrol points - usually all three - usually fairly far apart. I am paranoid about making sure I run away from air search, but I actually think my patrol patterns look at bit like the real war patrol plots I've seen - at least on the USN side.

Only exception to this I can recall is when using Japanese submarines as supply submarines. In that case I just set them to go to unload hex and then refill them when they return. Haven't tried to "automate" this yet - so don't know if it can be done for submarines.

dpstafford -> RE: Too Funny (8/8/2009 8:48:11 PM)

But I gotta ask. When you use the button to auto calculate your patrol zone (I'm always looking to avoid mouse clicks), it often doesn't include the target hex (say, Truk). But it is close by--close enough. Is this by design? Does the program avoid base hexes in an auto calculated zone? Does it avoid shallow water? (Should I just read the manual?)

jwilkerson -> RE: Too Funny (8/9/2009 12:20:47 AM)

I tried the pre-configured patrol zone thingy - eh - "patrol near target" - and wasn't too happy with it. I want my patrol zones more spread out - to duck in and out of air search zones - the auto version puts the hexes too close together for my liking.

First time you tried it? I thought you were the head cheese!

I think I would have an anal overload if I tried to set my own patrol zones for every sub. I'll stick with the pre-configured zones and see how it goes.

It works the same way it worked in Witp. Both buttons were there and performed exactly the same way.

Well, that would explain a lot. Apparently you never played WITP. Those buttons are NOT on Sub TF's in WITP.

It is in my copy. Are you patched up to date?

The game by it's very nature is a click fest. The game difficulty is listed as gronard, anorak, war historian for a reason! If you're looking for less work, more action, go play PacStorm or something on the Xbox. [8|] [:'(]

games that appeal to grognards do not have to be click fest. imo clickfest make things less fun. what's the problem when someone asks to fix the game so there's less clicking? send them off to their xbox geez, and whats that supposed to mean. sure there's no WiTP on the xbox but it still is a fine console. for me, anything that says less clicking more playing is a good thing.

ever counted the clicks to deploy all your subs (just from one sub base) in WiTP with captains you set?

Scott_USN -> RE: Too Funny (8/9/2009 2:18:35 AM)

I was under the thinking that in WITP all mine layers were default do not lay mines?

There is no way around click fest in this game. I disagree and mines should not be layed by default many times they are short legged ships and I bounce them off bases.

Mice are cheap. There are a ton and 1 hot keys learn them use them. Theyn you can say it is a button pushing game :) which I never knew a game that wasn't one or the other.

Clicky click clicked

No way I will control all the subs Computer is my friend. They are a sideline to my game imo and the computer is smarter than I and I don't want to "click" them all all the time :)

You're just plain wrong. See the screen shot earlier in the thread. We're talking about SUB TF's.

Again. The discussion is about SUBS. In this case sub minelaying TF's.

bradfordkay -> RE: Too Funny (8/9/2009 3:36:42 AM)

One new change to the TF system I have noticed is that when you create any TF and give it a home port other than the one in which it was created, it defaults to travelling to the new home port. This cuts out one extra click for those TFs you were sending to the new home port (which is pretty often). I like it, now that I'm used to it.

dpstafford -> RE: Too Funny (8/9/2009 3:49:54 AM)

Agreed!

Yup, back in Jan 2008. Head cheese or not I try to spend lots of time "playing" so I understand that perspective.
