Ed James -> air strikes don't hit soft targets? (10/30/2000 9:09:00 PM)

I am currently engaged in a PBEM battle in which I am heavily invested in air strikes and my opponent has hordes of infantry and few vehicles. When I target his infantry, the air strikes always seek out trucks or SPA units, even if they are far away from the targeted infantry. I have also discovered that designating other soft targets, such as 88 guns, will also be passed over if there is a hard target nearby. Is this a design or is there a way to correct this? Thanks, Ed James

hello , I had the same problem , the aircraft tend to go after the "goodies" leaving behind the infantry , the way I got around that was buying medium bombers , with their heavy bombs , and target any armour near ( 2 hexes max ) then the impacts of the bombs will wipe out any inf. near , true , I had a HE111 wiping out 12+ plts of british infantry with a bomb load ...

Hi! I have been reluctant to use aircraft because they cost alot and didnt do so much damage. Not anymore! With these latest wersions the big bombloads are really effective. Just dont have your own men to close. Its even nice to see that the aircraft can now even alter their attack course. But as Viriato said the flyboys tend to go after the pricy (read "big") targets. After all thas quite realistic. Look at the situation from the pilots perspective. A infantry platoon has much better chance of hiding from a plane than a tank nearby even if some arty observer can still se them. Regards Molset "Jakki er ekki frakki nema sidur se"

Enough of this pilots choice crap! They're not supposed to be out there glory hunting! If the Major says go out and shoot up some infantry and we/I so much as target it, which in essence tells the pilot where to go, then by God(!), they better go out and splatter some enemies guts over the countryside or come back and face a firing squad for disobeying an order from a superior officer! ------------------ MJ We serve others best when at the same time we serve ourselves.

I would like to be able to tell my pilots to bomb that hill or this bridge no matter what else they see. It is frustrating that they go out of their way to bomb a lowly SPA when the bombs could do SO MUCH more damage to infantry on that hill or could destroy the bridge the enemy was trying to cross. The best solution would probably be that rocket armed AC tries to attack vehicles while bomb armed AC tries to drop their load where you tell them. It is not ruining the game though. I always just imagine a blindfold and a fireing squad upon the pilot's return *G* ------------------ Lars Nec Temere - Nec Timide

Now why would they face a fireing squad. The way I think of it as a Battalion or so commander is that someone higher up gave them orders to support this or that attack and that is what they are doing. Im not their commander but I can request their support but I cant till them they most do this or that or els. WW2 pilots had to face factors that I would not know about at the time, like if their was a few squndrens of enemy fighters close by as a battalion commander I would more then likely not know about this. The best way I can think of it is that im only one small part of a much larger battle going on.

I would agree with you if we could not set the aiming points but only request the strikes. Off-board artillery shoots where we want it and not where division or regiment wants it allthough we are only battalion or so level commanders. But as I said it is not ruining the game. ------------------ Lars Nec Temere - Nec Timide

My air strikes seem to consistently stay within the target area, but when there is a lot of smoke and a lot of units consider yourself lucky if they friendly fire. Considering that I’m not laser targeting or giving GPS locations that’s all that can be expected. After Normandy the US had just started to position an ex-air- support pilots in a forward communications post. From these locations, it was his job it was to direct both in flight and called in for air strikes to where ever he had targets or had radio request for targets. This was a huge and successful advancement for its time.
