screamer -> who plays any musical instrument?? (6/6/2002 8:00:18 PM)

im bored, sorry to bother but i play bass guitar...........................

Mojo -> (6/6/2002 8:29:04 PM)

I started out on bass, upright and electric.

I play guitar, a little harmonica (no Magic Dick tho, LOL), trumpet, ukelele and am gettting pretty good with the tin whistle.

Haven't played them in years but I'm sure I could still play trombone, baritone and tuba/sousaphone.

Easy8 -> (6/6/2002 11:05:55 PM)

Bass

What is it with bassists and wargames?

My theory is that guitarists are too self absorbed to do anything but play guitar:D

Drummers lack the attention span (everyone knows drummers aren't REAL musicians) ;)

Horn players are all jazzbos (too cool to have fun)

No offense intended, just having a little fun:) :) :)

KG Erwin -> Another bass player (6/6/2002 11:09:50 PM)

Yes, I played in a semi-pro band for many years. Play guitar also, but bass is my primary instrument. Of course, the games go right along with this, since bass is THE coolest instrument and bass players are always the most intellectual and historically-minded members of the band. ;)

Easy8 -> (6/6/2002 11:23:54 PM)

KG,

I think your'e jivin' me, but there is a kernel of truth in what you said.:cool:

KG Erwin -> Here's another one of us (6/6/2002 11:52:12 PM)

Bob Albertson ("alby") is a bass player, too. Hmm, get us all together and we could do a bass-quintet version of Spinal Tap's "Big Bottom". :D

Easy8 -> (6/7/2002 12:11:48 AM)

Sound's like fun.

As long as I play the "bass" bass part.

I subscibe to the K.I.S.S ("keep it simple stupid", not Gene Simmons) style ala Duck Dunn on the Stax stuff they did in Memphis in the '60s.

Mojo -> (6/7/2002 5:25:10 AM)

Ok with all the bass players here who was your favorite or who got you playing?

I was a bass violin player until I heard John Entwhistle.

WarBuddy -> (6/7/2002 8:26:28 AM)

Hold on there all you bass players. I've been playing guitar for about 27 years. I'm 37 now, and still write music with my best friend who is a singer and also likes war games.

Played in various bands thru the eighties, now just do it for a hobbie. ( like I don't have enough hobbies already, lol)

Used to play stuff like Dio, Savatage, Maiden, Priest, Queensryche, Megadeath, Pantera and so forth. ( Just because it was the eighties does'nt mean everyone liked all those wimpy hairbands, he he) We also wrote a bunch a tunes, and still do.

I just have a passion for WW2 history, especially in the Pacific, who happens to be a heavy guitarist. ;-)

War Buddy out.

Ironfist -> I play Bass also (6/7/2002 1:04:28 PM)

You probably already know about OLGA, On Line Guitar Archive, I bet. I know they have some bass tab

Hey!
I resent those horn player comments!
I play the sax-alto, some baritone. Not often anymore, just honk around now...

TG there's no drummers so far though:D

Never could get a decent tone from any sax. Always the duck thing.

Brigz -> (6/8/2002 6:09:40 AM)

Okay, Easy8, it's a good thing your message icon was winking cause I play drums. I've heard all the drummer putdowns but I know in reality that all those dummer jokes are the sincerist form of flattery. Drummers are a dime a dozen (like most musicians) but a good drummer is very hard to find. Any guitar, keyboard, or horn player will do, but if you have a solid drummer and bass player with a good looking chick up front singing, you've got a band.

I started playing back when the Beatles came out and I played professionally through the 70's. My nearest brush with fame was when I played with John Fogerty (pre Credence) and sat in with Elvin Bishop when he came to town every now and then. Got to meet Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce when they were in Cream but never got to play with them. I guess Ginger Baker was too jealous. (Hah!) Was around a lot of other musicians but sex, drugs and rock and roll make for a foggy memory. Played it all... rock, jazz and even country. Had lots of fun but it just got too much for me and I decided to get a real job. Music can be a very tough way to earn a living and it really is a lot of work. But every time I hear a live band, I can hardly contain myself and I want to play. I'm 52 now but I can still whip any young punk on the drums. Any music any time. Not bragging, just confident.

Mojo -> (6/8/2002 6:14:37 AM)

Yes Dave we do like to pick on drummers but it's because we luv ya;)

What's the difference between a certificate of deposit and a guitar player?

The CD eventually matures!

screamer -> (6/8/2002 6:19:29 AM)

my 11year old brother plays alt sax but i cant stand the sound of it.

ANd a colleage of dad played in a band called brainbox the released some records in the early 70 late 60ties i beleve

thats because the bass and drums are the base of the band, infact the drummer is the most powerfull on stage

Brigz -> (6/8/2002 6:33:17 AM)

Mojo,

You're right on. I'll be the first to admit it... drummers are just a little more quirky than other people. You have to be a little bit cocky to play the drums well. We drummers don't brag, we just know when we're good. Hey, why do you think all the babes run off with the drummer? (Wink, wink, nod, nod)

But seriously, musicians are a great bunch of people and I'd sit in with anyone regardless of their ability. If you've taken the time to learn an instument then you're just as good as the next guy. It's just a matter of confidence and practice, practice, practice.

KG Erwin -> (6/8/2002 7:57:02 AM)

The first guy that I wanted to "sound like" was Chris Squire, with his distinctive Rickenbacker sound in the early Yes albums. I also loved what Paul McCartney did with the Beatles in the latter 60s, with his melodic sense of bass-playing. These are my earliest influences in the way I approach bass.

Easy8 -> (6/8/2002 7:59:33 PM)

Hey Guys! - Just having a little fun;)

No disrespect intended, let's save the flames for the AoW forum.:mad:

I am in awe of the drummers I have played with. There is no way I could do what they do.

And great soloists are more creative and dedicated to their craft than I could ever aspire to be.

I played professionally and semi-pro from the early '70s to the late '80s and have the utmost respect for any and all fellow musicians. Although playing music can be very humbling, it can also be ultimately rewarding. I wouldn't trade my experiences for anything.

Rickenbacker basses are the best - take that stupid cover off the back pick-up, and whack it with a heavy plectrum. There's nothing like that crunchy, dirty sound. Unfortunately I've never owned one as they cost a minimum of $1700 here :(

Brigz -> (6/8/2002 10:41:38 PM)

Easy 8,

I certainly hope you don't think I was flaming you or anyone else. Just the opposite. I was just teasing you back, cause I could tell you had been around music people too. I don't mind at all when I hear jokes and jabs about drummers. I know it's all in fun. It's a lot like guys in the military always pushing their buddy's buttons just to get a reaction. Almost a family thing. It's a unique way to say how much you respect and admire someone for taking the time and resourcefulness to do something creative and hopefully pleasing. Many musicians take themselves way too seriously and as you must already know, take anything a musician says with a grain of salt. The only musician I always take seriously is someone who plays classical. Now that is serious music and I admire classical musicians very much. In my book they are at the top. I'm just a drummer. They are percussionists.

I think we're all having a lot of fun with this discussion and I'm was please to see it started. Makes for a great way to get to know other gamers and what they are like. I love talking to other musicians and BS'ing about our experiences. But please remember, don't ever take me too seriously. I like to kid and BS. It's just the drummer in me. Too bad we all couldn't meet face to face. I think we'd have a blast. :)

Mojo -> (6/8/2002 11:06:30 PM)

My first bass love was a Fender Jazz bass that I picked up for almost nothing because as the guy who was selling it said "You realize it doesn't have any frets right?".

As a classically trained bass violin player that was perfect. Frets were limiting and playing fretless let me play by ear rather than looking for the fret. Plus if a string goes a little out of tune it's easy to compensate.

One thing we can probably agree on is singers............

LOL:D

Easy8 -> (6/8/2002 11:33:53 PM)

Dave -

No offense taken, I figgered that was what you meant.

That was a great story about meeting Cream:cool: :cool: :cool:
Jack Bruce was my idol back in high school.

I'd have to say one of the most rewarding things about playing music is getting to meet and share the stage with other musicians.

A great gig, where the band is is really in a groove and has a great audience will get you higher than any drugs and is better than sex:) :) :)

Anybody care to share best/worst, good/bad or indifferent stories.

I can laugh about this now, but my most humbling experience occurred in the early '80s. After a decade of stuggling, I joined a band that got signed by CBS. We drove to LA where we had booked Studio B at the Capitol Records tower. After about 2 hours in the studio, the producer brought in the A Team session guys - Jim Keltner on drums and Tim Drummond on bass - to replace us. They had been there all along! Welcome to the big time, kid.:D

Good story and very typical. The music industry can really kick you in the teeth when you least expect it. One of the many reasons a music career is so difficult. Don't feel too humbled because they did the same thing to Ringo Starr and many other now-famous musicians in their early days. It's a dog-eat-dog business and if you don't have some kind of pedigree, you're nothing but cat food to those leeches. And people wonder why so many successful players turn to drugs and booze.

You hit the nail on the head about playing live being better than sex. Getting that one on one vibe with an audience is like no other feeling. Non performers just have no idea. If I had to choose between having sex with Angelina Jolie or playing in front of a great crowd, then Angelina would just have to wait.

Good thread!

I am a drummer/synth player. Play in the American spacerock band Quarkspace, and the electronica outfit Church of Hed.

Music, wargaming and sportsgaming are always at conflict with my time.

With the talk about bassists on a wargaming site, it would remiss not to mention Jannick Top of the French jazz/rock/klingon opera group Magma. Magma has a very martial, almost Wagnerian melange of styles in their music. There's nothing like them. I can live without the fact they made up their own language, but the music is incredible, all out of the mind of drummer Christian Vander, whose scope of composition makes one think he was trying to counterbalance all the "stupid drummer" jokes since the beginning of music! ;)

DerC -> (6/12/2002 8:29:13 PM)

You got one guitarist here :)

I've played guitar for 5 or 6 years now. I've always been interested in blues music, and after finding a fellow guitarist who also likes blues, we've had some great jam sessions. :cool:
We're both big Stevie Ray Vaughan fans ;)
