Off Rabaul we run over an I boat dong it a fair amount of damage.

They try to engage my bombardment TF coming into Adak (see below) with an I boat but no hits.

18-19 Sep 1942

This turn confirms the war is over, except for bayoneting the dead and dying...

Subs
On of ours hits a mine in the inland sea. That was about it.

Burma
We attack Moulmein with B-17 with and without escort. A heavey CAP of around 30-50 aircraft causes us a bit of grief, and we don't do a lot of damage... Don't know what our losses were, but we have a lot of B-17 damaged.

At Pegu the attack goes in nicely... I'm not sure what was in a bad op mode or why...

That is now one div lost, one div trashed in Burma for basically no loss to ourselves... we now have an overwhelming advantage as we can create an offensive arymy of around 3000AV...

It won't be pretty for them here now... what will they do?

DEI
Mini KB makes an appearance trying to kill our CL TF that hit Koepang, they guessed rightly that we were at Broome, but then Tony moved to Darwin and this turn hit Dili... here are the results, picture below...

Airbase hits 49
Airbase supply hits 31
Runway hits 334
Port hits 2
Port supply hits 2

Lots of aircraft damaged at Dili, the bombardment was so effective due to the hugh DL level we had there (Lighting Recon for the last few weeks, 9/10 DL). The airfield is probably closed down, will launch a strike from Darwin methinks now!

You may ask why that SCTF had no CAP... well the British Navy decided they didn't need it (Tony did the move without co-ordinating it with tmy aircraft)... we may loose a DD...

The TF escaped OK from mini KB, and with a lot of fighters at Darwin they would be foolish to attack...

SWPAC

All quiet as we train and move forces about.

SOPAC
Our TF at Rabaul are being "pinged" by search aircraft (mainly Glen) all the time... we have 100+ fighters so I doubt they will attack now...

CENTPAC

Forces should be unloading at Makin (which is still Allied).

NORPAC
The Bombardment TF hits and we deliberate attack, causing a lot of casulties to them even at 1:1 odds. I will now rest a few days then attack again...

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (4/10/2010 10:15:23 AM)

We have now created about a 6-7 div differential....

2 Japanese Div are at Adak being destroyed.
One is in the swap west of Rangoon, she won't come out.
One just retreated from Pegu.
1-2 regiments were destroyed earlier.

In addition we didn't loose the two reinforcing Divs to Singapore (although one is ok the other is at 1/3rd strength), and we have now just about rebuilt the 8th Australian Div!

We have also rebuilt the 4th Marines (from the PI) as we have basically suffered NO USMC losses we have stacks of squads to do so....

We haven't upgraded the Aussie Militia either, so plenty of Aussie squads....

Unless we do somthing really bad (or they do something really good) we now have a significant advantage in ground combat power in comparison to the real war.

Cheers

Rob

How do you avoid updating the militia units?

Andrew

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (4/10/2010 12:30:12 PM)

Set them to not take replacements :)

They of course won't fill out with other stuff either.

Aaaaah. Good tip.
Thanks

Cribtop -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (4/10/2010 4:41:48 PM)

Wow, they may sue for peace soon. Earlier I said Burma is now the Thailand front. Methinks it is actually the IndoChina front. [X(]

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (4/10/2010 9:56:47 PM)

Well are discussing offering them to end the game.

For:

The Burma front is smashed open, trashing two of their divs... their ability to stop us is now marginal... but lots of hard fighting to come.

The SWPAC campaign will also be tough, but even here the writing is on the wall unless we make several major mistakes.

Against:
We would like to actually get a game into 1943 to play with new ships and aircraft.

Despite high ground losses their Navy and Airforce is intact... but I think out of position.

We have over half the Centpac forces "free", 3 Div plus, for employment. Fully rested and now preping for operation TIGER. We have enough trsnport for a two div assault force, and about another 3 div of lift (xAP).

Operation TIGER would see 3-5 div droped somewhere interesting...

Cheers

Rob

CaptBeefheart -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (4/11/2010 3:14:45 AM)

Well done, gents. However, it seems like they still have a lot of fighting potential--the KB is intact, right? I'd hate to see this end.

Cheers,
CC

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (4/15/2010 1:21:01 AM)

Well we are continuing :)

20-21 Sep 1942

Subs
Several attacks in the DEI/SWPAC area, including on some tankers of Makassar. But only one bang on an xAK north of Ambon.

Burma
We are advancing from Pegu with about 3000 AV. Not sure if they are defending the intermediate hex to Moulmein or just Moulmein.

We launch a series of strikes/sweeps against Moulmein, which looks to be largley LRCAPED. Around 30 Oscar are lost, a few Tojo. We loose 10 of the new P40k, but they did great doing most of the fighting, probably 2:1 in our advantage. We hit Moulmein with B-17 but damage is light to moderate (in total).

Tony is now reorganising and will soon pull some forces back for Operation TIGER.

May try moving some shipping into Rangoon.

PI
They continue to bomb Zamboanga. Supply is low.

DEI
Nothing to report

SWPAC
KB moved EAST around Timor but did't strike Darwin, Aru or any of our shipping. It looks to have moved back towards Kendari.

Several TF are spotted moving west from around Makassar, including a CA TF.

Looks like they are going to sheild this area with KB. We are happy with that as we prepare the airforce, and prepare for Operation Tiger, and move up the Nth coats of PNG.

It also looks like they are creating a new SCTF for the Malaya/Burma area.

Lots of troops and shipping trying to unload at Madang.

SOPAC
Still moving troops around. The key ports (Rabaul, Suva) are full and are the bottleneck (as they should be!)

Centpac
Tony continue sto unload at Makin. From their we can dominate the Marshalls with airpower. But it looks like they have pulled out completely.

NORPAC

The usual, another big attack next turn.

In the Kuriles more shipping is detected protected by a strong SCTF unloading forces. This is good as it is diverting their effort to here. We have no intention now of invading, once we have kicked the enemy out of Adak forces will draw down to purely defensive levels, and Adak will be used as the forward base for the sub interdiction of the Home Islands.

Cheers

Rob

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (4/16/2010 4:32:49 AM)

22-23 Sep 1942

Subs
Lots of attacks, including a few Japanese ones.

We get an xAK in the Kuriles and a top into a CL of Sorong (rare things CL's for the Japanese in our game, most are sunk!)

They sink an xAK carrying supplies to Rabaul off Rabaul.

We attack a CVE off Phuket heading towards the Burma theatre... maybe to provide CAP over Port Blair?

Burma
We harry the retreating troops, and continue to trash Port Blair with Wellington.

DEI
No action

SWPAC
All quiet. Kaimana (nrth of Aru below Boela) reaches level 2 fort, once 3 I'll start building a port, and move in an AA regiment.

Aru makes level 6 airfield. Now ready for offensive operations.

SOPAC

Our shipping at Rabul continues to get pinged by recon (unlike the SWPAc side where nothing appears to be flying). This is good to know, in future we won't launch ops from here, probably direct from Townsville only, to avoid recon.

CENTPAC
Also quiet.

NORPAC
At Adak we deliberate attack getting 3:1 odds both times, and causing around 3:1 casulties. Will rest a turn then do it agin (in no rush now, they ain't going anywhere!).

Adak makes a level 6 airfield.

China
They continue to bomb our troops from the air, otherwise quiet. Probably moving forces out as quickly as they have PP's!

Cheers

Rob

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (4/18/2010 12:37:16 AM)

24-25 Sep 1942

Subs
Well a good turn today, a bang on an xAK off Hokkaido carry resources, a bang on an xAP at Koepang, and a bang on an xAK at Koepang as well!

Burma
We continue to sweep and hit Moulmein. No planes rise to meet us. Damage each run is light to moderate, but the cumulative damage should now be moderate to heavy.

We are advancing in combat formation slowly.

DEI
No action

SWPAC
A raid by 10 Mavis on shipping at Aru is heavily intercepted, only 1-2 get away. In addition a Mavis on search was also shot down... a good day in the air :)

Taberfane, the base next to Aru reaches level 1 forts. My plan is to buid the forts to 3-4, then build the airfield. Supplies flow freely between Taberfane and Aru. I'll move the CD unit from Aru and an AA regt accross to Taberfane.

Kaimana continues to build forts as well. Have shipped in supply via xAKL without interferance.

Madang makes a level 2 port, that is good as their is a stack of shipping trying to unload there!

SOPAC
B-24 from Rabaul attack a DMS at TRUK... bad call. we are met by 57 Zero, loosing at least 1 B-24 for 1 Zero... probably lost 2-3 B-24 :( Won't do that again!

Looks like they intend to hold TRUK after all!

CENTPAC
Quiet.

NORPAC
Arty units bombard while the rest rest... will attack agin this turn... they shouldn't last much longer... not sure if we have enough room to bury 2 Divisions of Japanese on Adak....

CHINA

Predictably, but unstopably they are bombing Kukong and preparing to attack... Not sure if Tony has a clear plan for here or not... probably to sleep with as many of the merchants daughters as possible...

The prolonged quiet phase is annoying, but we can't do much at the moment... next offensive moves will be in around 3 months. Lots of time for them to dig in... but can't be helped.

Cheers
Rob

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (4/19/2010 12:56:07 AM)

26-27 Sep 1942

Subs
Attacked the BB Kongo, but the torps failed... set the scene for the next two days, several attacks, no bangs.

The Japanese though sink an AG moving to Rabual. I have a lot of aircraft on search and ASW... they have put a fair few subs into this area... will have to set up a co-ordinated assault on them.

Burma
Supported by air attacks the troops cross the river from Pegu into the intermediate hex next to Moulmein... and do good :)

Losses are high on both sides... real pity about the forts dropping :(

Again the lull continues.

Forces are arriving in Townsville for OPERATION TIGER...

More air units have arrived in Australia, but as we have a chronic shortage of everything but fighters they are all understreangth in aircraft and experiance.

Cheers

Rob

While discussion Operation TIGER this is what I get after a considered reply on force structure and sustainability...

quote:

Phaaaagh!!! Logistic rubbish! Just follow my cavalry lead to victory ... did I ever mention one of my favourite leaders was General Custer ...... :))))) Logistics will never beat Flair, Dash and Élan! and even if it did it would be victory without style; a hollow, pointless, withered thing that lives in the shadows..... :) Feel free to quote me!

Thanks Tony I will, I guess this ALMOST counts as a contribution towards the AAR... Alost but not quite... a bit like you are ALMOST as intelligent as the ASLAV which is your first love... Almost but not quite :)

Cheers

Rob

Alfred -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (4/19/2010 11:18:14 AM)

jrcar,

You recall how I found a certain similarity between Tony and Hindenburg, both being cavalry etc...

Maybe, after that lost quoted communication, the resemblance is more like Ney or Murat.

Rob
Just out of interest why do you send the ships back to SFO for refit/upgrade? I have been doing mine in Sydney. Any advantage to using the bigger yards?
Regards
Andrew

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (4/19/2010 11:54:44 PM)

I thought/think they need bigger yards, Sydney is doing other things, and I dislike having too much there (see Andy's AAR for a good reason!).

There are around 20 ships.

I do smaller DD and CL conversions forward but get scared of doing longer ones (the CV's have two upgrades to do).

Cheers

Rob

Subs
Only one bang... but what a bang!

Sub attack near Makassar at 64,107

Japanese Ships
CV Hiryu, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
BB Hiei
CA Atago
CA Tone
DD Kagero
DD Akizuki
DD Usugumo
DD Tanikaze
DD Amatsukaze
DD Hatsukaze

Allied Ships
SS Snapper

Aummunition explosion as well... nice :)

Lots of enemy subs being detected... starting to do something about it :)

Burma
We are resting. Planes hit Port Blair and molest a couple of DD's at Tavoy to no effect... maybe they are bringing in supply, or taking out troops?

DEI
Nil

SWPAC
All quiet. I'm swaping aircraft around to give the most experianced grups the B-24. After months of training the others are almost capable of droping a bomb near a target... but we need more than that.

Madang is starting to build up nicely with troops and supply unloading...

SOPAC
Troops coming in and out of Rabaul as we re-orientate.

Truk is a monster target... we will bypass it. But it will interfere with the flank of our PNG approach.

CENTPAC
Makin makes level 1 port. TB level 5 afld.

NORPAC
Resting and recovering for the final push...

China
We are holding at Kukong, but supply is a real issue... we will probably loose the base because of a lack of it.

The wait continues... In the next few days I'll do a monthly round up.

Cheers

Rob

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (4/22/2010 12:20:27 PM)

30 Sep - 1 Oct

Subs
Lots of action on both sides, no Bangs on either side. Wehave detected around 4-6 subs in the area around Milne Bay and from there to Rabaul. We are detecting them, so they aren't being very effective... but we haven't attacked any yet... need more ASW aircraft!

Burma
While the troops rest the planes attack. Port Blair is well and truely smashed. Rahaeng is attacked, we get a couple of Oscar on the ground... damage is light to moderate but mounting...

Beuforts attack Shipping at Mergui (sth of Tavoy)... but there is a Zero CAP... Beuforts get trashed...

They are either evacuating (most likely), bringing in supply (possible) or reinforceing (unlikely). The forces trapped this side of the trails from Bangkok are in trouble... But they could be brining in forces to Tavoy and Mergui to protect from raids... Need recon to tell.

SWPAC
Moving forces and aircraft around... almost where I want them...

SOPAC
Just sub action.

NORPAC
The Same. Not long now... how long to I prolong it?

BUT Paramushimo Jima is now a level 3 afld, and forces are detected on the other islands. They have been forced to deploy forces and supply up here... they have too... even though we won't come this way :)

China

Tony tries to cut off the Army moving on Kukong, but gets kicked back by a strong force. Chinese bombers hit a TK regt at Kanshein doing light damage.

Overall the wait continues.

Rob

Subs
Lots of action on both sides, but no bangs for us. They get two transports around Milne Bay... one carrying elements of a USMC Tank unit back to Townsville. We get some hits in return, and am moving in more ASW aircraft, but need more aviation support in the area. Setting up a couple of ASW TF to shuttle between Rabauil and Townsville.

Another Div trashed. They are retreating towards Raheng, leaving the coast route and the direct route to Bangkok open.

Tony plans to clear the coast first, so we can safely bring in supply to Rangoon.

Inland our flankers continue to advance, now they are in Thailand...

SWPAC
Still moving aircraft and forces. But we land at Selaroe. The plan is to close up on them.

Madang now Level 3 port, more forces unloading there.

An EAB is unloading at Hollianda.

SOPAC
Aircraft and forces moving around still. Ndeni reaches level 4 forts. Luganville now held only by NZ forces.

Fiji, forces are moving out, in particular aircraft. Not much will be left soon.

Supply unloading at Kavieng and Manus Island in preparation for engineers moving in.

CENTPAC

Makin makes level 1 afld.

Eng and USN BF moving from PH to Sydney for Operation Tiger.

NORPAC
Much destruction on the enemy at Adak, now getting 14:1 odds and destroying lots of squads. Will keep attacking. The forces here are getting experiance up into the 80's now, they will be good assault troops!

Ships

Doing lots of upgrading at the moment.

Aircraft
Critcally short of medium bombers, to fill out squadrons probably need around 80-120 aircraft. 4E also low, need about 30-40.

Fighters good, have around 120 P-40E and this will increase as the K model is flowing in.

Patrol aircraft short.

Transport aircraft about right.

Burma 3 Oct 1942

As you can see we now have 3 routes open south. We intend to clear the coast first, send armour on Flanks/pursuit. Our flanking force is strong enough to continue to clear from the North.

An option now is to use the two recently arrived Chindit Bdes in North Thailand...

Port Blair is isloated and ineffective. It will be left to rot.

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (4/26/2010 2:41:36 AM)

Here is the West SWPAC area.

Merauke is our main support/transhipment base for this area. Supply is bought from Sydney and Townsville in bult transport, broken downa nd sent forward to Aru, Kaimana and the other smaller bases. A strong SCTF is also based here, with support ships.

My plan is to take some of the smaller bases and inch forward north of Darwin.

Once Kaimana reachs level 3 forts (another turn) will start building ports and airfields. Aim is to use as a foward fighter base to support the Assault on Boela.

Aru will soon see a group of 48 B-24 based out of it.

In the Far west Broome is expanding and will soon have another strong BF. This can attack Kendari, or support Operation Tiger.

At the moment things hold back is preparing the B-24 group, building Kaimana, and advancing up the north east coast of PNG. We should be ready for the next phase in about a month.

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (4/26/2010 2:53:53 AM)

On the NE Coast we are rapidly building up MADANG (3 construction regiments, 3 BF), and conducting concurrent operations (accepting risk of raids) to build up HOLLIANDA (USMC Paras, 2 Eng).

Next Step is BIAK.

Ultimate objective is SORONG. This is the target of the 8th Australian Div.

MERAUKE will help with Dutch forces.

SOPAC Forces will start to isolate TRUK while protecting the flank at MANUS IS.

Rabaul is a sub base, but it is too obvious to be used as an invasion base. Instead TOWNSVILLE will be used, with follow on forces from Rabaul.

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (4/26/2010 3:05:38 AM)

CENTPAC.

TB is the main base, MAKIN and NAURU are ligtly held, but that is changing at MAKIN.

Japanese forces still in the area, Tony is conducting recon by fire with LB30.

Aim is to clear and close up using minimal forces... but there are around 2-3 divs and support troops involved.

A raid here by KB at the moment could be nasty... but we assess their focus is the SWPAC.

The circled bases are future targets to isolate TRUK.

Work on both sides of the Pacific has slowed this game to a crawl, starting to pick up again though.

4-5 Oct 1942

Subs
Lots of contacts and attacks, around the SWPAC (Milne to Rabaul for the Japanese) and in the north and home islands for the Allies. The Allies get an xAP off Onnekotan-jima as the only susse on either side. Allied ASW is starting to be effective from Milne Bay to Rabaul with 2 hunter groups and about 30-40 aircraft on ASW patrol.

Burma
We rest and bomb the enemy. The advance will begin again, with armour following up the retreating troops, and the infantry clearing the coast. Our flank forces continue to liberate north Thailand.

SWPAC
Selaroe is taken, otherwise quiet.

CENTPAC
Tarawa is invaded, a couple of our guys stub their toes.
