Friendly Intentions

SEAsia
Neutralise and seize BANGKOK in order to:
Draw Japanese strategic reserve.
Take a central position and split Japanese forces to reduce their ability to mutually support.

Subsequently land on SUMATRA in order to deny access to the main resource areas.

SWPAC
Seize the northen tip of PNG and the southern Phillipines in order to isolate forces in Borneo and Java from Japan, and cut off access to resources from the south.

CENTPAC
Close with and identify the main line of resistance. Maintain presure and force the enemy to commit forces.

NORPAC
Using sub warfare and possible CV raids limit access to the northern resource area.

The strategic endstate is that the Japanese economy will be denined all but limited access to resources in order to reduce their ability to conduct effective warfare.

At some point in 1943 the main line will be cracked with overwhelming force with a subsequent pursuit to the Home Islands.

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (9/14/2010 1:07:14 AM)

SWPAC Orders

Campaign objective is SORONG. From here 4E aircraft can dominate the "gap" to The PHILLIPINES limiting access to resources. SORONG will also act as a "Shield" to enable raiding forces to operate as far as the Phillipines.

The subsequent campaign will be seizeing and maintaining bases in the PHILLIPINES.

Plan

BOELA will be secured with a two divisional assault using US forces. Forces assigned to AMBON will be reassigned to BOELA. Forces will begin loading immediately.

AMBON will be neutralised from the air.

SORONG will be seized using the 8th Australian division supported by US forces.

Issues:
Combat engineers, need to assmble and prepare them for both BOELA and SORONG.
Need more shipping for follow-on forces. More shipping is located at RABAUL and SYDNEY and will move to TOWNSVILLE.
Fighter cover from KAIMANA. Need to concentrate the P-38 capability.
Possible raid on KENDARI with surface forces?

Cheers

Rob

Operation Olympic by July '43? I think you guys can do it. I hope your opponents stick it out.

Cheers,
CC

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (9/15/2010 1:52:14 AM)

Operation Olympic probably won't happen in this game... the enemy will sue for peace before that I suspect!

The forces from Uttaradit have now escaped our cordon, but the 5th Div is so trashed it doesn't really matter.

At Tavoy it shows what a Japanese Regiment can do (or how poor Allied forces can be on attack). They have held us there for several weeks. Now though we have a fighter base close to Bangkok and can move up P-40 (of which we have about 160 spare airframes and plenty of units) instead of the P-38 sweeps from Raheng.

The Imperail guards are escaping East to Vietnam over trails. We will probably let it go, by the tie it pops out the war will be over :)

SWPAC
For the last several turns I have been reconing Manokwari. A month ago their were a few units there, but recon and a few bombing rus hadn't detected anything. So I sent in a para bn on the assumption they had pulled out... big mistake. The Bn has been basically wiped out. I do have a fragment to rebuild from, and about 100 para squads in the pool, but it will take time. Fortunately a second para bn has just arrived in the theatre, so hopefully they think we now lack a para capability...

Otherwise apart from the sub attacks on convoys areond Ambon things are quiet. I'm resting the B-24 group, it is now almost up to full strength of around 60 B-24. Next turn the B-17 group is hitting Sorong Port to see what we can see.

Forces have begun loading at Townsville, it will take time to fully load. I also "found" another 3 CA and 2 CL to add to the surface cover force.

I'm going to logistically support the action from Merauke. There is an AE there, 2 AKE are moving up, we have around 80k in fuel. An AO tf is also moving forward, and I'll move up some AR's.

Unfortunately I only have enough assault lift for Boela (2 Div, 3 Tk Bn, 2 Arty Bn). So there will be a gap between Boela and Sorong. The good news is around 7 SEEBEE units just arrived in Australia, and four are allocated to these operations. I also have about 3-4 engineer units already deployed forward which can be committed in the second lift.

The B-17F in the area are now fairly tired, they will be used to kepp up the "ops as normal". Then they will be replaced with the B-24 Group and a B-17 Group from the Rabaul area to hit bases hard prior to the assault going in.

In the Phillipines Zamboanga still holds... but probably not much longer. Cebu is not under threat yet, and we can almost start flying forces in...

SOPAC
Shipping and air is being diverted to support SWPAC. Some assualt shipping was sent to CENTPAC. The area is veryt secure, but a lack of B-24 limits offensive options. The only "nuts" are TRUK aned PONAPE. Ground forces are preparing for the later when shipping and air support becomes available.

CENTPAC
The CV TF are now where they need to be and troops have begun to load. 5 CV, 3 CVE, 4BB, 16 CA/CLAA/CL lots DD. This should be at least as strong as the part KB that is in the area...

Once secure on the next objective the Marshalls can be easily mopped up.

NORPAC
The weather is really damaging the escort vessels. I've had to send the ASW groups to port to repair. It is also impacting on the SS as well. The air force is on 10% CAP. All is quiet. Adak is almost a level 8 port now. A submarine offensive is the only action from here and I'm slowly pulling forces out.

Boela Invasion update

The CVE support TF is now off Merauke. The invasion TF will go round the Cape York next turn. I am about 6 days(3 turns from landing).

The engineers and BF units are loading now.

I'm sending in PT boats and a CA TF to Boela to sweep away the DD's.

3 more light CA/CL tf are in the area in support.

Aru will be the main support, it has about 10k in fuel, level 3 port and 244 Naval support. There will soon be an AE and 2 AKE there, and two 50k Replenishment TF are on the was as well.

CENTPAC Invasion
These forces should land next turn or the turn after. Hopefully that will draw their reserves just as I land in the SWPAC.

Cheers

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (9/24/2010 9:49:19 PM)

Well I'm about to face a tactical dilema...

As the invasion force for Boela goes in I will have to run the gauntlet of the Ambon and Kendari defences.

I have 60 B-24 and about 30 B-17F, 50 P38E and lots of F4, P40.

Ambon is a forward fighter base with around 60-90 fighters, Zero and Tojo.

Kendari has 2-3 Daitai of Netties.

I can:

a. Just CAP the TF. It is a long way from Kendari, it is long range from Ambon, and my airbases are closer. He is mostly fighteing over my ground, but I run the risk of loosing some shipping...

b. Sweep then bomb Ambon. I can sweep with about 50 long range fighters, and bomb with around 60 4E bombers... but I'll be fighting over their territory, and medium to long range, against fresh and trained aircraft... But I should be able to hit it fairly hard.

c. CAP then attack. Try to tire his aircraft out, take some risk, and if it doens't go well then hit his airfieds.

I'm leaning towards c. We are trying to preserve our bombers, we don't have that many, we have lots of fighters (less P-38) and we can afford to loose some shipping now, as more is about to arrive.

Thoughts? Need to issue orders soon...

Cheers
Rob

Cribtop -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (9/24/2010 11:05:59 PM)

I like c. However, if you really have a LOT of fighters to spare, how about adding in a sweep or two for good measure? Weakens their fighter defense in case you later have to bomb Ambon.

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (9/24/2010 11:07:59 PM)

The Sweep needs to be done by P-38 and Beufighters... both are in very short supply. P40E and K we have oodles.

Maybe the K will reach.

Cheers

Rob

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (9/26/2010 9:46:38 AM)

Ok have just done my part of the turn, situation map below.

You can see Aru and Kaimana are my main support bases for the operation.

My CVE TF shows that it has been detected, but the invasion one isn't. I expect they both will be fully detected next turn, it can't be helped... but I can attempt to confuse the issue...

The plan is to advance this turn to the RV hex. This puts me in striking distance of both Ambon and Boela, and should divide their forces...

A CA tf will sweep Boela again this turn, as will PT's. When the invasion TF arrives I'll also move over a PT sqn from Kaimana, they can reful from the transports.

It looks like they are reinforcing Ambon with troops, their is an AP amphib TF offshore, but the unit count hasn't changed...

There are currently severe storms over the AO... I hope it lasts another turn or even better two!

In related news I have an Airbourne Rgt and an Airbourne Bn preping for Morotai... a deep strike when they commit forward should help. I did think of dropping them with the invasion TF... but I'm not sure if that is gamey OR an intended design of the game engine...

Cribtop -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (9/26/2010 7:01:23 PM)

Can't see how using paras as part of an amphib invasion could be considered gamey, personally. It certainly was done historically in both major theaters of war. If you mean it's gamey because you get a shock attack on the turn of the invasion, even that seems justifiable as the paras would force the issue for both sides. For the attacker, you have to link up before the paras are overrun, for the defender, paras behind the lines creates the danger of being cut off and annihilated.

witpqs -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (9/26/2010 8:45:26 PM)

I think it is intended in game design and not gamey. It would be gamey if you just drop a few para squads to trigger the effect in the game engine, but using a whole unit (or as much as you can lift it it's a large unit) is fine IMO.

Nemo121 -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (9/26/2010 8:48:22 PM)

Aye, a few squads might be an issue but a full unit ( or a good faith effort to lift most of a full unit ) would be perfectly fine IMO.

quote:

Only the paras would shock attack, right?

Cribtop -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (9/27/2010 1:10:52 AM)

I've actually always wondered about the answer to that question.

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (9/27/2010 12:39:08 PM)

Thanks for the feedback, indeed what is the exact effect? I thought there was something about the forts not being a factor, as well as the shock attack...

Cheers

Rob

witpqs -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (9/27/2010 8:19:56 PM)

1) The paras shock attack.

2) The paras dropping & attacking at the same turn as a land attack cuts the defenders AV by 1/2. (This is IIRC, best to get other folks advice here.)

3) Not sure if the other units in the hex will auto-shock attack - probably best to explicitly make them attack at the same time.

This was going to be a mixed force of UK forces (3-4 Div) and Pacific Ocean forces (2 Marine Divs plus supporting troops). It would have included 1.5 divs of Armour. The aim was to land and then make Palembang untenable.

The biggest issue was the risk. KB is remaining in the area, and the potential loss of several divisions at sea, while "unlikely" is still high for comfort. We have mitigated the risk, but now other options are more viable, with a lower risk profile and similar strategic endstates.

The disadvantage of not following through is that the Japanese will continue to have access to a lot of resources, but we intend to make it hard for them to use it!

SEASIA
The 3-4 Divs of UK forces at Madras preping for Sumatra will now instead move to Rangoon, and move down to attack Bangkok. Once Bankok is taken we will head to Vietnam, leaving a blocking force at the top of the Malay peninsula. This plays to our strengths of ground cpombat and air power.

Phillipines
The US forces currently at Perth (2 USMC divs) will now be committed to an early invasion of the Phillipines. This is now a priority. We will thread the needle of The Moluccas on one side and the Marianas on the others. This will leave a long exposed flank. Australian Bdes will be freed up to act as garrisons. The entire SOPAC forces are curently free as well...

CV's
With at least some of the Japanese CV fleet in the Indian Ocean, and a few damaged in port, ours will stay concentrated, first supporting the clean up of the Marshall Islands (allowing transports to move from the west coast without management) then to support the Phillipines.

The attack on Sumatra was shaping up to be a fun operation, however the risk profile was higher than we would have liked. We are using methodical battle at the moment, which has succedded nicely, which is low risk and plays to the Allies advantages, while minimising risks (in particular the Brit forces being made combat ineffective due to losses).

We need to start pushing in China so they can't afford to move too much stuff out.

So we intend to tackle the empire by grabbing them around the "neck" (head being Japan, the body being the DEI) and strangle them... with extreme predjudice.

Itel though is already reporting forces moving into the Phillipines, so they have already identified the threat... looks like a race may be on!

Cheers

Rob

KB in the Phillipines

Having part of KB off Cebu is an interesting and unwelcome change.

The good news is we know exactly where it is, and its strength.

And that its intervention didn't help take Cebu.

The bad news is it is 25 Hexes from our invasion site, and could be interfering with the invasion of Boela in 2-3 days (about 1 day too late to stop us).

We are now one day from landing at Boela. This landing force has most of our available assault shipping, so should unload very quickly. It has a lot of BB's and CA's for protection.

The worst course of action for us would see that part of KB charge on the invasion site. We could loose capital ships and transports (our most critical componant).

Combined with an air assault out of Ambon/Kendari we could see a massive battle!

But they know it is under the protection of a lot of air cover, and they may think Ambon is the target, as we have continued to bomb Boela...

I'll discuss with Tony but I think the invasion will go ahead.

If they do intervene this is a good opportunity to pull some Japanese CV teeth. And they know there are some CV in the area, but not where the rest are... that should make them cautious.

With so many BB's they are the likely target of the enemy aircraft, and we can afford to loose some, and they have all upgraded at least once so they should chew up their air forces. We have decent support bases close to hand that we can repair in.

The worst case would see our transports caught at sea with troops still aboard, I don't think that will happen, and we are unlikely to loose a lot of transports.

To mitigate this the 10-14 subs in the area will vector in to help.

The other good news is that we know there are no significant forces in the CENTPAC so the attacks there can speed up!

Tony wants me to hit Ambon with B-24 next turn.

If we can chew them up then the CV's can swing around to help with the Phillipines confident of CV superiority.

In summary while this is a risk the pay off is that we can pull some CV teeth, well within the coverage of our ground based airpower, with the biggest risk the loss of assault shipping, when more is flowing in anyway.

If we can culminate their airpower at this point then the next step will be easier...

Cheers

Rob

Almost certainly the op mode was the culprit here... It wasn't in combat mode.

As to Boela. Go for it, if you can culminate their airpower - especially groups based on KB - then everything in the Boela region and the Pacific will become much, much easier for the next 3 months ( the time taken to retrain brand new pilots ).

jrcar -> RE: Aussies vs Amis - World Defence(no Joe or Nik) (9/29/2010 1:26:27 AM)

After an investigation into the incident it appears the Commander had been "distracted" by the appearance of a pretty young thing and while he had "deployed himself" he forgot to order his forces to deploy, hence they were caught in "March Mode".

The young thing had recently arrived from the south... and might be a plant.

Thats the trouble when cavalry officers are given command of large forces...

Overall a good turn. I expected (planned worst case) for them to sortie all their Netties and have KB rush in. Instead they continue to preserve their airpower. Ambon is heavily damaged and the bombardments their will continue to close it down. Boela should fall next turn and the engineers and baseforces can then land. Maybe they will comit KB then...

Things are moving again in the CENTPAC as well, we want to clean this out ASAP.

Cheers

Rob
