darrenl -> Noob questions... (8/12/2009 3:21:41 PM)

Got a very quick set of questions for you guys.

I'm playing the Guadalcanal scenario, and I think I'm doing quite well so far. I've been able to hold PM and I have even took Buna recently...and that's where my first question lies. What I'd like to do is use Buna as a launching point for two seperate invasions: one at Lae and the other right into Rabul. Yeah...Rabul will be crazy, but I'm doing it anyway :). I'm starting to hit supply issues in Buna and the obvious place to get them from is PM...so how do I get supplies from PM to Buna? Can engineers build a road or rail system for this? Not sure how to bring supplies from PM to Buna at all.

My second question involves the transfer of bombers or planes from one base to the other....I'm not sure I'm doing it right even though it seems to be "working". What I'm doing is just going to the bomber/fighter group that I want to transfer and selecting to "Move to Base" button, selecting the base and that's it. It seems to instantly move the bombers and/or fighters to the target base instantly...which I find very odd considering how long troop loading and movement is. Am I missing something in the process? It just seems a bit too easy and I think there is more that I need to know for this kind of movement.

Cheers,
D

For bringing supplies from PM to Buna, it's either by air transport or sea convoy around the tip of New Guinea.

As for the other part, you'll notice that quite a lot of your transferred planes aren't available for ops immediately after the move. That's the price you pay for the "instant" transfer. If the bases are connected by a railroad, the group can go by rail, and then its planes will be crated and take even longer to get operational.

1) The most efficient method to get supplies to Buna is to ship them there.  Engineers cannot build a road or rail line anywhere, and the Owen Stanley Mountains are between Port Moresby and Buna anyway.  If you read about the campaign in this area you'll quickly realize overland supply routes just don't exist.

2) No that's how they work; the planes fly to the new base and are ready to conduct missions.  However, the next time you do that, look at the squadron's fatigue level.  A long transfer will fatigue the pilots so giving them a mission immediately runs the risk of a lot of operational losses.  Rest them for a day if fatigue is high!

Great. Thanks guys.

Also note that if you transfer a squadron with planes damaged or in maintenance, they get left behind, so you need to check up on the left behind bits and finish transferring them as the planes come online.
