I am playing the Guadacanal scenario and I have some P39 units that never upgrade. You can only upgrade to P39 variant, P400 or P43.

What happens to these units later in the war? Are they withdrawn?

They became P-38Gs for the most part in late 42 mid 43

P-400's fought at Guad for the entire fight in the "Cactus Airforce"

They performed some amazing and life saving ground attacks for the Marines turning the tide in a few fights when they only had 3 patched up aircraft.

Bell P-39/P-400 Airacobra (Fighter)
Not all of the aircraft on the island were Marine or Navy aircraft. The Army Air Forces' 67th Fighter Squadron arrived on Guadalcanal shortly after the Marines, and they remained into 1943. The main fighter of the 67th was the P-39 Airacobra, and its export variant the P-400 (the more common of the two types on Guadalcanal). These were used as fighters and bombers by the 67th. They were not successful as air fighters, but could be well used in the ground attack role.

Subtitled "Down on the deck where it hurts", it shows P-39s of the USAAF 67th Pursuit Squadron strafing enemy positions. (Part of the Valiant Clan series of paintings.

BTW, the Russians liked the P-39, and used it to good effect, it was suited to the low-altitude tangling on the East Front. I think they lightened it by removing a couple of guns.

I checked and noticed that they do have a P38H upgrade. I thought it was a P39H! I need to get my glasses checked. I'll convert them as soon as I can!

I've read that they also liked to remove the 37mm cannon and use it as an AA gun on railway cars.

There is one unit that can't upgrade to P38's. I wonder if I upgrade it to the last available P39 variant, it will have other options...

Those crazy Russians!

I had great success early on with the p-39 in the Guadalcanal campaign. Put em' straight to work working over the Japanese land forces over the Kokoda trail. Eventually needed to add fighter escort for em, but wow they can cause some casulties!
