migoodman -> Install Error - 'Can't Set Screen Mode' (8/18/2009 5:57:02 PM)

Hi,
I just installed AE onto my Acer Aspire One netbook (8.9" screen) which I use when I travel - it should accomodate minimum game specs since it has a 1.60ghz N270 chip and 1GB RAM. It installed fine, with no error messages.

When I tried to run the game, however, I received an error message that said: "Error: Can't Set Screen Mode"

Is there an easy fix to this?

Thanks,

Michael

Is your computer even capable of 1024x768 screen resolution with that tiny screen?

Does your computer have 1024x768 as one of its resolutions?

Too slow, even T beat me.

Only by 10 seconds.

Hi guys,

I got this error this morning from using a shortcut with an edited command line. The shortcut was from Start>Programs>WitP:AE>WitP:AE Quick start.

The odd thing was that yesterday, the very same shortcut (with no changes made to anything in the meantime) worked without problem.

The problem was and is not (so far) present using the quick start with an edited command line available from the start menu.

In my case, definitely not a hardware problem. The only 'odd' thing about what I'd done was that the actual start menu quick start shortcut had an amended command line, while the shortcut I created from it was amended slightly differently (-deepColor vs -deepColor -altFont).

Good question: the max resolution on the Aspire One is 1024x600, though there's an 800x600 option as well. The minimum specs in the manual don't mention screen resolution. Does anyone know of a work-around?

Thanks

The minimum specs are 1024x768 resolution, so stated on the product and store pages. I think you may be able to work around this with your video drivers and their scaling adjustments. I've seen netbooks run apps larger than 1024x600 by letting some of the app go "offscreen" and it scrolls it if you move to the screen edges.

I've got an Asus EEE 1000H which also has a resolution of 1024x600 but the screens scrolls (not the game itself) so it will show 1024x768 without problems (except that you don't actually see the complete screen which of course is a small drawback).
I would guess that your Aspire is equal to mine and it works fine.

Okay..got it working. For future reference, here's how to adjust the screen resolution on an Acer Aspire One netbook (8.9" screen) to get it to run AE:
1. Right click on desktop area to bring up "Display Properties"
2. Choose "Settings"
3. Choose "Advanced"
4. Choose "Monitor"
5. un-check the check box that states "Hide modes that this monitor can't display"
6. Go back to "Display Properties" and change resolution from 1024x600 to 1024x 768" pixels.

AE should run now, though you'll need to scroll 'off the page.'

Thanks for the tip, Erik - now I'll be able to play AE while awaiting the morning when I stay at the Holiday Inn Express.

Michael
