My nephew owns a Mac, but after becoming tired of not being able to play his favorite PC games on it -- including certain games by WCS... -- has decided to purchase a program called "Parallels for Mac" that would enable him to install Windows and switch back and forth between the Mac OS and Windows. Does anyone have experience with this program, especially using it for games? Any tips or advice (or warnings)?

Works fine for most games that are not particularly recent. Forget about DirectX 10 games on it, and many DirectX 9 games that really need the 9.0c functionality won't work either. I expect the WCS games will work on it, but the best option for Mac users is really to just Boot Camp and run Windows on their Mac separately.

What a cool uncle. Wish I had one that developed games when I was growing up. Sure beats mine. The only thing he showed me was how to play poker, reload 45 shells and make a whiskey sour. Ah, the times they are-a-changin'.

BTW, is it FoF he is interested in Gil? That has been my favorite game that I have ever purchased from Matrix. Haven't played for some time, but since I just bought a new laptop I thought I might fire it back up. Hopefully it works with vista 64 bit.

BootCamp will allow you to play anything PC. You just need a copy of Windows, any version will do (I use XP). Bear in mind that anything graphic-intensive will need a decent video card, just like in a PC.

I have a grandaughter who received a Mac last Xmas and is missing her favorite D&D type game from the PC... how/where is this boot camp obtained? Is it an inherent Mac OS ability or a seperate piece of software?

Thanks for the info. He had already opened Parallels by the time I called him, so he's going to give it a go. Since Boot Camp would require a full reformat, that's his last option. It does sound like some of the other games he owns won't run, but it's good news that FOF and COG:EE will.

Man, I wish I had had an uncle who taught me poker and let me handle guns! Yes, he likes FOF, but also used to play the original COG. (He was ten or so when he began to play COG, and I always wanted to retort to those who would complain on the forum that WCS games are too complicated by writing, "Well, I know someone who's ten who had little trouble learning how to play!" But since it's a bad policy to insult the customers, I always resisted the temptation...) And it's good to see that you're getting back into FOF yourself.

The Mac is a new one (from January), so I'm assuming that the video card will be good enough.

I am on my second mac book and used boot camp on both. Using it to run windows worked just fine!

BootCamp does not require any re-format. It will take up an allotted (by the user) amount of HD space using what you have available. 30Gb is generally a good amount of space. If he wants to install something as mammoth as Empire:TW, maybe add another 10Gb to that.

I have a MacBook Pro and have both Bootcamp and Parallels. I have recently retired and am just getting "back into the hobby." I have been using Parallels for the two matrix games I have purchased- Advanced Tactics and John Tiller's Campaign series. I prefer Parallels because I can switch back to the Mac OS easily. Have not tried to run games though on Bootcamp. I can report the two games I have purchased run on Parallels with Vista.
