rroberson -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:11:49 PM)

I think there was a pretty good Ben Afleck movie a couple years ago...

Xavier5733 -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:12:29 PM)

IMO, "The battle of Midway" (1976) [&o]

Schani -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:17:41 PM)

A good old one: Guadalcanal Diary (1943). Also a great book.

AcePylut -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:18:08 PM)

Pearl Harbor

There... I said it.  The "movie" that shall not be named, has been named.

Schani -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:19:05 PM)

And now you must walk the Hall of Shame.

AcePylut -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:20:28 PM)

/starts walking

paullus99 -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:22:39 PM)

Midway was good - too bad "Shattered Sword" has killed all of original myths of the battle.

Schani -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:25:10 PM)

I could mention the other one, The Thin... Nope I'm a coward.

m10bob -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:28:17 PM)

Bataan....Air Force......The Purple Plains......

Xavier5733 -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:28:33 PM)

I forgot this one.
"The Thin red Line" is one of my favourite war movies.

sfbaytf -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:30:57 PM)

I've seen just about every war movie made. Wouldn't mind seeing a remake of Tora,Tora,Tora and Midway if it was done right, but I'm not holding my breath. Hollywood isn't into making historically accurate movies these days. In order to attract as many viewers they have to cater to the ladies and that means "chick flicks" elements slip into the mix.

Pearl Harbor with Ben Afleck, was laughable. No amount of special effects can make up for a warped storyline and innaccuracies.

These days if I want to see/learn about the Pacific Theater I just stay at home and fire up:

World at War
Battle 360
Victory at Sea
Crusade in the Pacific
WW2 in Color

And other fine DVD's that can be bought online or rented.

One book I'd like to mention is "The Campaign for Guadacanal" by Jack Coggins. He has other fine books I also have. Its out of print and not easily available, but if you do some searching online you should be able to get it.

I watched that movie a couple years back.

I'm still not sure what it was about.

Schani -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:32:43 PM)

And that was the other unmentionable. The one I cowardly wouldn't name. You may join Acepylut in his walk.[:D]

dude -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:34:36 PM)

I'm still a fan of "Bridge on the River Kwai"... I learned to whistle because of the Col. Bogey March... [:D]

Schani -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:35:23 PM)

My last post. That was for Woody

Graymane -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:42:42 PM)

What? No "Empire of the Sun" or "From Here to Eternity?"

Mark VII -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:52:19 PM)

Think that was my first hardback book in my collection about the war in the pacific. First edition 1972, during my 2nd year of High School. Remember it fondly.

moonraker65 -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:54:07 PM)

Tora! Tora! Tora!. Without doubt the best portrayal of the Pearl Harbor attack. And for 1970 not bad Special FX.

Hanzberger -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:55:02 PM)

TORA TORA TORA
[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

Schani -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:56:12 PM)

I agree with sfbaytf. Those are some great DVD's. Plus World at War can be purchased on the History Channel website site for a little over $50.00. Where as twenty years ago I bought the TV offer, 26 VHS tapes, six to eight weeks delivery, for 2 1/2 years, at just under $1.000.00. How times have changed. Life is good.

AcePylut -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 7:57:16 PM)

/finished his walk

If I could make a movie, any movie, it would be a remake of Star Wars (the new hope)... from the other side.

I would make it about the "dude that pulled the trigger that blew Alderran apart", coupled with a story about Darth Vader's wingman in their Tie fighters, make it about "the stormtrooper that bonked his head on the ceiling when chasing Ham Salad", add the story about the "look sir, droids" stormtrooper, have Admiral Thrawn be one of the main characters... etc. etc. etc.

But BEST war movie?

Saving Private Ryan, Stalingrad, The Winter War, Das Boot, Tora Tora Tora

Mr.Custer -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 8:04:45 PM)

Anybody ever see "Beachhead" with Tony Curtis and Frank Lovejoy ? How about "Destination Burma" with Errol Flynn.

Schani -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 8:06:16 PM)

Acepylut,

Now your talking. Pacific War. One I just Remembered. King Rat (1965). Again, also a great book.

And books mentioned earlier by sfbaytf. Like Jack Coggins `Guadalcanal' is great easy read. My bible for Guadalcanal is Richard B. Frank's `Gaudalcanal. Can't for get `Rising Sun' by John Toland.

kaybayray -> RE: Best movies about the Pacific War? (8/21/2009 8:08:28 PM)

The Bridge over the River Qway (spelling??)

30 Second over Tokyo

The FLying Leathernecks

Battle Cry

In Harms Way

They Were Expendable

Operation Pacific

Back to Batan

I Bombed Pearl Harbor (Japanese film, pretty good too for when it was made)

A Wing and a Prayer.

From the Halls of Montezuma

From Here to Eternity

From Hell to Eternity

Up Periscope

The Flying Tigers

PT 109

The Last 100 Miles (not sure of this title)

Heaven Knows Mr. Allison

Burma Road

Operation Burma

On the Wings of Eagles

The Fighting Sea Bees

Well that is all that comes to mind at the moment. Sure I could think if many more if I spent a few minutes.

Later,
KayBay
