Mus -> Suggestions for learning this game (8/21/2009 7:50:14 PM)

Hello,

Just recently picked up this game, after hearing about it from some players of another Matrix title.

It is super complicated, which is good, but any suggestions for the best method to learn how to play this game?

I hope the physical game with manual arrives soon as I prefer to read a real manual.

Just to give you an idea of where I am at on the learning curve, so far I have played the Coral Sea scenario 2 times. First time through I took out the CVL and did heavy damage to the Port Moresby invasion task forces, but lost both of my carriers. That was called a marginal victory. Second time through I figured out how to specify search arcs for my patrols and found their large carriers first and managed to get decent hits on two Japanese CVs but again lost both my carriers in their counterstrike. I quit the second one before conclusion.

I don't know what kinds of altitudes I should be setting my planes for. Their airstrike seemed far more effective, particularly their torpedo planes.

Any advice for a novice appreciated.

Take your time, read the manuel, take your time, read the manuel and stop back to start asking questions. [:D] For instance, I will most likely spend 10-20hrs on the first move.[X(]

Start by playing one of the smaller scenarios.
The Guadalcanal scenario is a good start - most of the game-mechanics are in play, but on a managable scale.
And the first important invasion (of Lunga) has been set up for you at the beginning, so you can sit back and watch the show, concentrating on managing your carriers and getting the supply lines up and running.
Supply is scarce and not always easy to move around in this scenario, so you'll be forced to learn the ins and outs of the supply-system.
Which is completely essential if you want to be any good at this game.

And when you hit a wall, go to the forums and use the search function.
Chances are most of your initial questions have already been asked and answered (or at least debated violently).

Oh, and remember to have fun...! [image]http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/image/s1.gif[/image]

hey Mus

I recently purchased mine as well

you are a bit farther along than I am at this time ( have not started a game yet) just reading the manual and watching the AI play itself while I watch my kids

we should try a PBEM game in a few months
once my kids start school I will be able to do 1 turn maybe 2 a day

Years (OK, years and years) ago, when I first got interested in good wines with dinner, I received the following advice:

To become a wine connoisseur, get a corkscrew and a lot of bottles of wine. Open them, try them, and remember the ones you like.

I believe the same will work with the game, although it would probably be more fun if you combined the wine part.

My wife would have gotten really pissed if she was out working and I was sitting home cranking out turns of AE. Your priorities must be set!! Not enough time to have a happy home and bury yourself into this game. Get rid of the wife and kids and settle in to a long term relationship with WITP-AE[:D][:D][:D]

she might get mad if she was here[8|] but right now she is in thailand that is why I bought the game now (she never wanted me to said it cost to much but she will never know )[:-]
so I dont buy HOI3 for a few months i figure that will be how long it takes paradox to patch the game anyway
its funny this stay at home dad stuff is really more time consuming then work was (i was a sales manager for a 400 person Autodesk reseller had 7 offices and 53 reps to oversee but I still had time for my hobby) Now all I have time for is this

Are there any kind of "logistics for dummies" type threads you could refer me to right off the bat?
