shoglic -> Inf AT bug (6/9/2002 9:20:40 PM)

Have any of u guys out there seen that infantery AT units with AT-rifles can NOT pierce armor??

At least GE Inf AT can not.

OKW-73 -> (6/9/2002 9:29:40 PM)

Yea, i noticed same thing, thats why i dont use ATR units anymore...

MacCready -> (6/9/2002 9:34:49 PM)

Im playing the russian Steel campaign,
A hidden ATR did destroy a b-20 armored car.

It would have had to pierce the armor to do that?

Belisarius -> Don't use the b-word! (6/9/2002 10:18:48 PM)

Au contraire, ATR's can too penetrate armor! :cool:
This goes especially for the Russian PTRD and PTRS rifles. I have had PzIII's taken out by these! They are the best, and is also available in the German OOB as PzB 783(r) and PzB 784(r).

gainiac -> ATR's........ (6/9/2002 11:38:38 PM)

Check the penetration values for the weapon in question, I think you'll find that most ATR's are only good against lightly armored vehicles, and even then it better be a damned good shot.

German ATRs work fine. I think the problem, for me anyway, was that the stat-sheet for the weapon doesn't have the normal penetration tables that we are used to seeing. But, as Goblin told me a month or so ago, if you look at the max. pen. line on the left-hand column of the info screen you can see that the German ATR has a max pen. of ~32, IIRC. You just don't know how close you need to be to be effective with the weapon. I just try to be as close as possible, no long shots.

WhiteRook -> (6/11/2002 2:23:54 AM)

Yep, just about any countries AT rifles will work at close range and at "very light" armor. Remember folks - these are heavy rifles not Bazookas or Panzerfausts! These are a hold over from the first world war....... ;)

In a recent PBEM game my opponent immobilized my Tiger with a lucky shot from a Soviet PTRD AT rifle. They're effective on HT's and most AC's also, and since they can be difficult to spot they can be a real nuisance. I'm not so sure about the German ATR's but I never underestimate the Soviet AT rifles!!

rbrunsman -> (6/11/2002 7:01:32 AM)

Next to HMGs, they are a priority infantry target for me. They disappear so easily and have a nasty habit of popping up and damaging or immobilizing your vehicles.

Don't be so sure about the light armor comment. In a small scenario I built back with v4 and have played since, a German FJ company drops on a Crete airfield that has two Matilda I's for support, I have seen those "useless" at rifles take out a Matilda.

It may take 20-30 shots, but they eventually get that lucky shot that forces a crew to bail or takes out a main gun etc.
thanks, John.

I kinda like ATR's.

There is a really interesting first-person account from a former Soviet AT-rifleman here:

http://www.iremember.ru/infantry/zimakov/zim1.htm

It's from a pretty neat site about Soviet soldiers in the Great Patriotic War - the home page is here:

http://www.battlefield.ru/index.html

Hope someone else will enjoy it, too.
