SmittyG -> SE minor problem, not real bug (8/26/2009 4:37:31 PM)

Hi All,

Have been busy, but finally got a chance to try 2009.036, and noticed an annoying feature of the scenario editor, which I don't think was present in previous versions.

The issue occurs when adding multiple aircraft types to a group in the SE. Previously, when an aircraft was added the same aircraft remained highlighted on the drop down list. This was convenient for the selection of another aircraft type to be added, as normally, additional aircraft are from the same country and the next aircraft type would be on the same or a nearby page on the drop down list.

In the new version the selector reverts to the top of the list, and the user must page back through hundreds of aircraft to select the next one.

If I remember correctly, this problem cropped up in one version several years ago and was squelched in the next version.

Regards,
Smitty

True enough, funny that it is only airplanes, ships and subs are fine here in 2009.042. You'll want to remind me or make an issue report at HarpGamer if I don't fix it in the next few builds.

okay, I had a few minutes and was curious so I looked at the code. The behavior since before HCE's initial release (I stopped looking back when I got to the code as of March 13, 2005) is the same as the behavior Smitty notes, i.e. after adding aircraft resetting to the top of the list). For giggles I disabled the code that forces the reset to top of the list and couldn't provoke any horrible behavior as a result (no crashes, no problems when switching to a different carrier in a ship group, etc.).

So, how do you all want it, reset to the head of the aircraft class listing after adding aircraft to platform, or leave the last selected aircraft class selected after adding aircraft to a platform?

note to self: NEWGROUP.C line 319

I'd vote for leaving it at the currently selected aircraft. The next one you want is almost always closer to that than to the top of the list.

+1. Because I'm almost invariably adding all the side's relevant aircraft at a time.

Since I brought it up, I obviously would prefer to leave it at the previously selected aircraft.

I have only been playing the first 3 battlesets (.sc1, .sc2, .sc3 ). I have noticed that, occasionally, aircraft that I have given an order (using Fn 3) to go to a location and loiter (using Fn2 ) ignore the loiter order. I don't have any saved files. At first I thought it might be that I had inadvertently left out the "loiter" order. I started being more careful and have definitely had some fail to loiter even though I am sure I gave the loiter order. It only happens occassionally ( maybe 5% of the time ). This problem previously seemed to affect ships, but not aircraft. The ship issue appears to be fixed.

My vote also goes for the last selected aircraft.

Yeh, I think I've seen this too, I must admit I've been in the middle of heavy headscratching at the time and just sent the pilot a quick reprimand and got him to stay put while I attended to other matters.
(I had thought it was to do with my not completely overwriting previous "course" definition but in view of you seeing the same thing maybe I wasn't to blame.)
I'm sure I saw it recently so will try to get a game save unless someone beats me to it.

That was pretty good response, builds 2009.043 and newer shall have the aircraft listing return to the previous spot when aircraft are added to a platform.

Thanks Tony!

It was really annoying when populating a BG with lots of escorts all using the same helo type.

Smitty

PS. I am still seeing the situation where aircraft are directed to a spot and ordered to loiter and occasionally they don't.

I do not see this problem happening for me, as long as I follow this procedure:

1. Select the air group and click 'Course'
2. Select the point on the map where I want the air group to loiter
3. Click 'Speed'
4. Set altitude and speed
5. Even if 'Loiter' is already highlighted, select it anyway .. you should see the displayed speed change to the appropriate loiter speed
