screamer -> best bassplayer (6/10/2002 6:32:00 PM)

sindce there are somany bassplayers here.

I say flea is the best but thats more my style.

Kanon Fodder -> (6/10/2002 11:05:47 PM)

I'll show my age and nominate Chris Squire
:D

KG Erwin -> (6/10/2002 11:21:28 PM)

Ok, here's another older geezer: John Paul Jones, formerly of Led Zeppelin. His two solo CDs, "Zooma" and "The Thunderthief" showcase him on a number of different keyboards and stringed instruments, plus his ability as an orchestral arranger. He was easily the most talented (and under-rated) member of Led Zep.

Mojo -> (6/11/2002 4:01:00 AM)

That's hard so many styles and so much talent.

Tommy Shannon, from SRV and Double Trouble and before that Johnny Winter. Not flashy, just solid

Victor Wooten, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Check out this guys website and check out the lessons section, especially Lesson 7 called Classic Thump.:eek: www.victorwooten.com

I'll have to think on this some more

dpstafford -> Oh, please!!!!! (6/11/2002 5:05:12 AM)

Peter Hook of Joy Division / New order is the best bassist!

victor semensi -> No contest! (6/11/2002 6:45:50 AM)

For rock, John Entwistle. For everything else, Bootsy Collins.

KG Erwin -> Best bassist from a technical standpoint... (6/11/2002 7:24:45 AM)

...or overall musical contribution? That was why I voted for JP Jones. Technically he's outstanding, but overall as a musician he shows the whole picture. The same can be said for Paul McCartney, who, IMHO, is a great melodic bassist (the inspiration for Chris Squire, maybe?), a decent guitarist, keyboard player AND noted singer/songwriter. :D That lead line on "Taxman" ? He played it. I would also add Geddy Lee of Rush in the multi-instrumental/singer/songwriter category. Sting, also. Frankly, the tech wizards like Billy Sheehan and Stanley Clarke and Jaco Pastorius, while they they amaze me with their technical prowess, don't move me the same way these other guys do. I tried to attach an MP3 file here, but Matrix' server won't allow it. d amn

Kanon Fodder -> (6/11/2002 8:56:04 AM)

Have to agree with you on all points, KG

Good post.
:cool:

pwdood -> (6/12/2002 6:31:33 PM)

Ahhh, a best bassist thread on a grognard site.... nice!

Chris Squire of course.

We musn't forget Jack Casady.

Props to JPJ and Entwhistle.

Jannick Top of Magma. Very powerful.

Flea and Les Claypool from more recent times.

Victor Wooten from Bela Fleck's band.

...but the Don Corleone of all bassdom simply has to be....

Charles Mingus

what a compositional/performance MONSTER!!

Muzrub -> (6/13/2002 12:43:24 PM)

Most talented and all round legend!

ROGER WATERS not a bad bassist and a brilliant song writer!
Ex Pink Floyd and Fantastic solo artist!

Amazing in concert!

:) :cool:

screamer -> (6/13/2002 5:25:59 PM)

jamiejamiejamie, plz stay on TRACK

WarBuddy -> (6/13/2002 7:05:53 PM)

I'd have to say Billy Sheehan. I saw him live with Mr. big, and he blew me away. I also like Steve Harris of Iron Maiden. Might not of been the best, but solid, and has very good stage presence. Gotta have good stage presence.

Take Flea for an example. Very good Bass player. But when you watch the guy, he acts like a circus idiot. Way too goofy. Also he wastes his talents with the "Peppers". Most of thier music sucks imo. I think we played one tune from them along time ago. It was "Take me to your backwoods" or something like that.

I also like Johnny Lee Middleton of Savatage.

Absolutely...

At last someone else here with some decent musical tastes;)

KG Erwin -> Do I detect a generational conflict here? (6/15/2002 10:48:48 AM)

Some of you guys are mentioning people I haven't heard, but I'll check 'em out.

I don't think there's a generational conflict - I'm 36! And Joy Division were a band active from 1977-1980, so hardly something new. Just a bit out of the mainstream and the charts, that's all.

I will concede that I've always admired McCartney's bass skills, though, especially as the guy could sing whilst playing very complex lines...cool indeed. [Oops! - there goes my punk credibility!].

Hades -> (6/15/2002 2:40:16 PM)

the best bassest is either Roger Waters, Pink Floyd or Fat Mike, NOFX.

young turk -> (6/19/2002 6:08:27 AM)

charles mingus, definitely.

MacCready -> (6/19/2002 6:10:59 AM)

Tony Levin is the best current active bassist,able to play any style.
a Bassists Bassist

Mojo -> (6/19/2002 7:20:39 AM)

Best looking bassist........Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles

fud -> (6/28/2002 3:35:59 AM)

I always thought Graham Maby was fantastic. He played with Joe Jackson and did a lot of studio work. Last time I saw him was with The Silos (or was it Walter Salas-Humera after the Silos disolved?).

Jack Cassady from Hot Tuna was also a joy to see and hear.

And someone already mentioned Bootsy Collins - bring on the funk!

What about Johnny Thunders? Or Sid Vicious? Or Dee Dee Ramone? Granted, not a lot of refined technique, but I love those bands and those songs.

screamer -> (6/28/2002 7:04:24 AM)

to bad dee dee ramone is dead, but, hey,as far as i know it was an overdose, wich makes it his on fault :P ;)

rbrunsman -> (6/28/2002 11:32:15 PM)

Quote from E!Online:

As a testatment to his musical genius, Entwistle outranked Paul McCartney, Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones and Cream's Jack Bruce as Guitar Magazine's "Bassist of the Millennium."

The Ox [Entwistle] distills inspiration, technique and that fine edge of madness that separates the great from the merely good," the magazine declared.

Adds Luongo, who played with Entwistle for 15 years: "As a musician, he did for the bass guitar what Jimi Hendrix did for the guitar."

Rest in Peace John. :(

Kanon Fodder -> (6/29/2002 1:16:51 AM)

Another sad day for musicians and music lovers.

I am just glad I did see The Who (albeit without Keith Moon) a few years back.

Thank you, John, for many hours of listening pleasure.

Actually, I believe all three of the punkers I named died of overdoses. Not to bait you, but I find it hard to be sanctimonious about someone else's addiction problem - I mean, there aren't many perfect people out there, you've got to look at the rest of the picture. Or maybe I'm just hyper-aware of my own imperfections....:)

It really is too bad about John Entwistle. I got to see him in small shows a couple of times - I'll miss him.

U2 -> (6/29/2002 11:56:20 PM)

Hi

Its U2's Adam Clayton for sure.
Dan

UndercoverNotChickenSalad -> (7/9/2002 2:57:50 AM)

*tsk *tsk *tsk

Not one mention of Les Claypool or Geddy Lee.

Unbelievable.........

NO MENTION OF JACO !!!!! ???? ******in' JACO !!!!

Jaco is the greatest bass player ever. If he used a fretless, he had to replace the neck every performance because....... he shreds the neck. The guy has fingers of steel and the speed of a hummingbird.

So the guy takes a fretless neck and turns it into sawdust w/in 2 hours. THAT is awesome. Jaco is the best bar none. He's dead now. Was killed by a bouncer at a bar who beat him to death. Apparently Jaco wanted to hammer a few notes and the bouncer, didn't know who he was, wouldn't let him on stage, and they got in a fight. So not only was the guy good, he DIED trying for the opportunity to entertain.

Roger waters? :rolleyes:

Flea? :rolleyes:

tssssss

....... tsssssss

*shakes head*

CCB -> (7/9/2002 3:03:37 AM)

uh, who's JACO? :confused: :o

UndercoverNotChickenSalad -> (7/9/2002 3:25:17 AM)

http://www.jacopastorius.com/home.php

Too bad so few know who he was.

Also too bad this bouncer didn't know who he was:

"He was at a club and decided to sit in with the band (sorry, don't remember who). One of the meathead bouncers at the club mistook him for someone trying to create trouble for the band (which was apparently exaggerated by his anger), took him outside and beat him severly. He apparently died as a result of the wounds administered by the bouncer. I don't think they ever charged anyone with manslaughter (as it was surely not the bouncer's intent to kill anyone), as they never really discovered the one who did it."

"The 25 year old bouncer named Luc Havan (he was into martial arts) claimed he threw Jaco out, and the sidewalk was the cause of the injuries. Havan was charged with second-degree murder. He got 22 months in jail, but got out after 4 months because of good behavior. The reason his sentence was so short is because he said he was guilty of manslaughter."

rosary -> (7/9/2002 11:40:35 AM)

Well, Jaco was a bit crazy.

Is this discussion limited to living bassists?

Brian Bromberg is about the most lyrical bassist I've ever heard live. Reminded me of Allan Holdsworth but on bass.

Stanley Clarke should also get a nod. Not to mention Jeff Berlin.
