A 'grognard' is someone who knows more about the Afrika Korps than Rommel did..
Seriously, it's a hardcore wargamer, someone who started with board games and moved onto computers. A grognard studies all the minutiae of armies. Generally they specialise; there are ACW grognards, WW2 grognards, Napoleonic grognards etc. It has the origin in a nickname for Napoleon's veterans, who had seen it all and were impressed by nothing. Grognard is French for 'grumbler'.
