Marvelous -> My Carriers Won't Attack! (6/11/2002 11:48:18 AM)

I'm playing #17 as the Allies. I have a 4 CV taskforce near Lunga. The Japanese sent a BB TF to bombard Lunga and my carriers didn't do anything. I have them set on Naval, etc. Why wouldn't they attack?

Note: A couple of my CVs are slightly damaged.

Did they bombard at night? If so, your a/c won't fly when they're set to daylight ops.

I should quickly point out that Von Murrin is not suggesting that you switch your carrier air groups to Night Flying. (I hope)

The issue with the bombardment missions has been debated to death elsewhere on this forum (mainly by me).

Basically the issue is that because of the phasing sequence of the daily turn you can more or less be certain that aircraft cannot interdict bombardment missions.

So! unless you are willing to sacrifice surface ships to intercept them on the bombardment hex then you have very few effective options.

In the end I persuaded the AI to stop doing it by a combination of placing subs on patrol in their formation area (bearing in mind that they have a strong DD escort group) and by laying Mines in the hexes they had to pass through on route to my base. (Both these options are totally a-historic but then so is the bombardment group immunity mechanism.)

I didn't do any damage and I lost one sub but it shut them up until I could get long range bomber cover over their assembly area.

I appreciate it--didn't even dawn on my about night bombardment--I guess that's why I'm a car salesperson and not a General!

Didz is a fox. I'm a hound. He would like to kill bombardment TF's with minimal loss, so he tries to find a way to hit them from the air. I just send the biggest surface TF I can scrape up. Night surface combat is fun. :)

We'll have to compare notes at the end of #17 and see whose strategy produced the best end results. The fox or the hound.;)
