Amazon.com sent me notice of forthcoming book called Pacific Express: The Critical Role of Military Logistics in World War II by William L. and Sandra McGee. Apparently it is Vol III in the Amphibious Operations in the South Pacific in WWII Series. Had not come across these before. The other volumes are: The Amphibians Are Coming! Emergence of the 'Gator Navy and its Revolutionary Landing Craft, and The Solomons Campaigns, 1942-1943: From Guadalcanal to Bougainville, Pacific War Turning Point.

Anyone read/have these books? If so, would you recommend them? Thanks.

I've got both those books, vol I and II.
I thoroughly enjoyed them. Gave great insight into the deployment and use of LSTs and LCTs in late 42 through end 43.
I've been waiting nearly 3 years for vol III.

Something that sticks in my mind is that they tried to sail / tow the first LCTs from the West Coast to the Solomons. They quickly realised the open ocean was no place for LCTs so developed the tactics of :

1. loading LCTs whole onto the upper deck of an LST and then inducing the LST to list so the LCT would slide off at the destination.
2. Utilising the fact that the LCTs where built in 3 modules and shipping them on the decks of AKs. When arrived at destination they would by craned off and then 'bolted' together.

The above is the reason I have no difficulty in creating landing craft from supplies loaded on cargo ships - it somewhat abstractly copies history. Ideally the ability to load boats onto ships would be preferred.

Unsure how things work here. I’m usually reading posts not writing them but the lack of response to your request forced me from anonymity.
 
Have read vol 1, vol 2 is waiting for me on the “books to read shelf”. Unfortunately the shelf is long and my time is short.
 
To answer your question directly.
Would I recommend Vol 1: Emphatically yes.
The writing style can be cheesy at times but this is more than compensated by the detail provided surrounding the emergence and first deployment to the South Pacific of the larger amphibs (LCI, LCT & LST’s).
 
Read the Amazon site feed back section where readers better versed than myself can explain the intricacies of each book.
 
Will I purchase Vol III on the strength of Vol 1. Hell Yeah …… It's on the Christmas list, I’ll just reinforce the shelf.

Appreciate the comments about the books.

Looks like I will put the Amphib Ops books on my shopping list.

Also appreciate the great links.

I was in the Army in the early 90's when the Army republished many of the United States Army in World War II series volumes. The historians office where I was stationed had extra copies of many of them and I picked up about a dozen or so for free. They were softcover versions but were complete. Instead of having the maps attached inside the back cover, like the hardcover editions, they came separately, which actually makes them easier to use.
