d0mbo -> RE: So tell us a little bit about yourself...... (9/2/2009 7:50:28 PM)

d0mbo here,

just a random nickname which popped up when i entered this new thing: the internet ;)

I'm from Holland, born in 1982 (does that make me the youngest?) and i like simulation and war games. I'm too young to have served in our military as conscription has been suspended in the Netherlands. WWII has been a 'hobby' since i was about 11 years old. I think it was a movie about Midway that got my attention.

Although I know most about the European theatre of war, I also like to dabble with the war in the far-east. I have fond memories of Microprose's TF1942, basically the guadacanal scenario, with an option to "get into the naval action"yourself.. and all that in the mid nineties! Anyone else remeber this game and knows if there was a sequel?

Next to AE, which i am trying to get into, i am fan of the AGeod merchandise, used to build cities in Simcity and also fire some torpedoes in Silent Hunter. I also have a handful of other matrix games.
Basically i like to build and/or conqueror stuff. Well, I spend too much time doing that, according to my significant other anyways.

I am curious if it is possible in AE to have some sort of CO-OP game, with 2 or three players on each side, each responsible for a certain area and/or production, logistics etc. Does anyone know?

JWE -> RE: So tell us a little bit about yourself...... (9/2/2009 8:40:10 PM)

Born, Wiesbaden, Germany, 1949. Came to America 1955. Dad was a soldier, Mom was legally still a “war bride”, life bites, but we got here. Florida; Dade City, Brooksville, Tampa.

Commissioned Artillery, AUS, 1969. Served 319th AFAR, RVN. First TDY, then PCS, Aeling Corporation, US NDSC-NSA. Retired national service 1992, Maj., USAR.

BS Physics, Chemistry, Bates College, Lewiston Maine. MS Optical Physics, Acoustic Physics, Materials Science, MIT, Cambridge, Mass. Worked for a living designing weapon systems for TI and Harris Corp, then became a patent lawyer so I could see all the cool stuff coming down the pike. A founder and principal of Lighttime, LLC, developing advanced weapon systems for the US military.

So enuf of that crap. I design and race sailboats. I like sailboats. Sailboats are utterly cool. If I can be remembered for anything, I hope it’s for sailing.

Barb -> RE: So tell us a little bit about yourself...... (9/2/2009 9:11:36 PM)

Dont know how many people are familiar with my nickname. Basically it is shortened Barbarossa (king Frederick I, Barbarossa and operation alike).

Born in 1984, no wife, no kids yet, history fan since I remember (should be 5 years old or so). Always reading books on topic, or searching internet for information sources for both european and pacific theathers of WW2 as well as napoleonic battles.
When I was not playing computer games with my friends, we were allways thinking and creating some wargames for ourselves based on history. From drawing map of world on 4x4 meters papers through throwing darts simulating bombs to using pyrotechnics to blow up ships made of empty cigarette boxes (ah, memories)....

Started with Bismarck, Guadalcanal, Red Storm Rising in 90s through Panzer General, Steel Panthers and SPWAW i got to UV, WITP and finally AE.

Now I am strictly WITP-AE addict [:D]

88l71 -> RE: So tell us a little bit about yourself...... (9/2/2009 9:16:30 PM)

Since it's a game about the PTO the first thing I thought of was the famous submarine USS Barb [:D]

Sheytan -> RE: So tell us a little bit about yourself...... (9/2/2009 10:14:20 PM)

First name is Frank, born is 1962 and am a military brat or was. My father served in ww2 in the Pacific, in Korea, and in Vietnam. We spent time in Thailand, Phillipines, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. As a adult I have been to Spain, Germany, Italy, Greece, Yugoslavia when it still existed, and Bulgaria while it was still Warsaw pact.

I began boardgaming as a youth, my older brother would use me as his test dummy. I was a suscriber to SPI for years and enjoyed thier mag/games very much. As a adult I have migrated to computer games and have also played a number of MMO's.

I served in the Army as a 11 Bravo, went to UWM in Milwaukee after, then worked in Turkey as a contractor for the DOD. I have since returned to the USA, have two kids and live in Arizona.

My sig was based on a comment a turkish friend made to me when I was teaching him to play the original carriers at war, he said I was like a sheytan; devil, been using it ever since.

thegreatwent -> RE: So tell us a little bit about yourself...... (9/3/2009 1:35:15 AM)

My name is John and I'm a WitP-holic. The story of my forum name changes with each telling so if you ask no questions I'll tell no lies.

A Colorado native I've been a wargamer since I invented my own WW I Red Baron game using graph paper and cardboard at the age of 10 (I made the eindekker an elite plane since with one wing it was more advanced, some in these forums would have had fun tearing my poor game apart[;)]). I served in the Field Artillery which explains my sig and why I think the devs should increase the value of Arty in WitP[:D].

My degree is in History with an emphasis on U.S. History. Favorite research areas of interest to me include Enlisted life of Sailors aboard the Great White Fleet (1907), Baseball in the military, and the French Revolution. I recently have considered starting a project on the history of guerrilla warfare but at this point lack a natural starting point.

Presently I enjoy AE and chatting with my Thread mates on the Forums. I feel this game attracts a wonderfully eclectic group of people whom I enjoy this hobby with.

Knavey -> RE: So tell us a little bit about yourself...... (9/3/2009 7:55:20 AM)

My name is Dave and 69 was the best year. Married with a 4 year old that likes fire trucks over tanks. That probably is the influence of his uncle the fire fighter.

Spent 2185 days in the USN on CVN-71 from 87-93. Didn't like a day of it and loved every minute of it. The vets will know what I mean.

My name is a take off of the Billy Joel song "Piano Man" where he sings of Davy in the Navy. Of course, my friends called me Navy Davy when I was in and I modified the spelling slightly because I was definitely NOT the lifer he sings about.

Been playing wargames with Feinder (my YOUNGER brother) since we were...hmmm...don't remember how young we were. AH Panzer Leader was the first one I recall.

Played MMORPGs as some have mentioned including UO before it was nerfed, AC as a member of LDS, DAOC as a nobody, WW2O in JG26 and DFO but have already stopped playing that one because its hard to devote time to those games when you have a 4 year old. IGOUGO is much more condusive to that.

Jepo1501 -> RE: So tell us a little bit about yourself...... (9/3/2009 1:45:19 PM)

Ok here i go, Jepo is a shortening/nickname of my surname, had it since i was kid don't really answer to my christian name. 1501.....thats to do with my job no great issue with it really. I was born in '59 and have been interested in the Pacific war for as long as i can remember, played war in the pacific for a long time, now on AE, not a master by any stretch of the imagination, just love playing it and sharing this exceptional hobby with people around the globe.

Got a wonderful, gorgeus wife, two children, three step children and ten step grandchildren......christ how did that happen! I spend most of the time asking the mem sahib who the hell was that who just spoke to me!

I spent several years in the British Airborne forces.

My wifes father was captured by the Japanese at Hong Kong in'41 whilst he was in the Royal Navy and aboard HMS TERN a river gunboat which has a confirmed Japanese fighter confirmed shot down, she was scuttled in hong Kong harbour on the 23rd December, he then fought as infantry until the surrender. He was in a camp near to Nagasaki when the bomb went off.

I live in Good old England. Thats about it really.

I am very happy to meet you all.

sprior -> RE: So tell us a little bit about yourself...... (9/3/2009 2:22:41 PM)

Born in 61, raised as an army brat by the British Army. Was in the RN for 16 years, now work in IT. Married, 5 kids (1 no longer with us).

Got into this stuff with my dad's Purnells History of The Second World war. Read them avidly as a boy. made my own games as a teenager using Airfix soldiers and large map of western Europe that seemed to be surplus to MoD requirements.

My first inkling that real games existed was when I found AH's France 1940 in a locker in HMS Collingwood. First game I ever played was in the IFF room of HMS Galatea (F18) playing AH's Richtofen's War.

Both my grandfathers fought in WWII, my maternal grandfather being captured on the retreat to Dunkirk, the other served in India. My dad fought in Korea. I hid from Russians in submarines.

henri51 -> RE: So tell us a little bit about yourself...... (9/3/2009 2:51:59 PM)

I am apparently the oldest here, four grandchildren, born in 1937 and began playing wargames with Avalon Hill's Gettysburg around 1960, then Blitzkrieg, the Russian Campaign, Squad Leader, you name it. First PC game was Tigers in the Snow and some bomber game. History buff (especially WW2), short stint in navy ROTP (Canadian ROTC) not worth mentioning, retired professor of Physics (but still goes to office from where I am writing this).

In addition to this game, playing Hearts of Iron III (played also previous versions), WOW, Total War series, dozens of other Matrix games, flight simulators, chess, you name it. Most played game was The Russian Campaign, where the cat usually beat me by stepping all over the counters when I wasn't looking.[:D]

Still reading the WITP manual and watching boggled-eyed the computer play against itself in the Guadalcanal scenario. Play on to 3GHZ Macs under Win XP Pro under Bootcamp (go Mac go!...).[:'(]

grraven2004 -> RE: So tell us a little bit about yourself...... (9/3/2009 6:01:57 PM)

I was an avid Starfleet Battles player. In captians log 15 there is reference to an Admiral Gr'raven. He was Kzinti. That being my favorite race at the time I chose that handle. It has stuck with me since. I do enjoy playing the axis in most of my games. I even root for the Empire in Star Wars [:)]
I am a truck driver by trade. Although I've been seriously thinking about a career change.
I started playing wargames back in high school. First game I ever played was AH Submarine.
Then I bought Flattop and the rest was history for me.
I did dabble in ASL for some time but always came back to the Pacific.

Herrbear -> RE: So tell us a little bit about yourself...... (9/4/2009 5:48:19 AM)

Born in 1950 and have been gaming since AH D-Day in 1962. Picked it up, actually begged my Mom to get it for me, for $.99 in May Co. basement sale. Married for 31 years to a wonderful women who lets me buy games and books so much that we have two walls with floor to ceiling shelves to handle them all and puts up with the hours I play or at least read the boards and rules to games.

Got my handle from a friend many years ago as I am sort of a big teddy bear like person. I work for a major US bank for the last 32 years.

davidgillsol -> RE: So tell us a little bit about yourself...... (9/4/2009 1:47:25 PM)

David here. Handle is from the name I used as a D&D character in university- too many years ago to mention. Born and bred in Sunderland, but now living in London. Was  ( and still am ocasionally) a miniatures wargame player, never that much into board games.  Gave me something to do with all the airfix military kits I used to make. Never in the military but a big military history fan. Came into WITP by way of WPO- I was looking for a WW1 naval computer wargame and that was the closest. Read the manual- liked the thought of controlling the Japanese economy so went and bought WITP the next week. WPO has been almost unplayed since!

tc464 -> RE: So tell us a little bit about yourself...... (9/4/2009 8:21:14 PM)

Ted here. My logon is my initials and my old USAF specialty code. I spent 6 years in USAF as a bomb disposal technician. After I got out I spent the next 14 years doing the same work for a lot better pay. I have at one time either defuzed or blown up a lot of the ordnance in WITP. In 2003 I recovered an intact Hellcat from a swamp, complete with 4.5 inch rockets and .50 guns. A steam clean and some oil and the guns were in working order. [:D] I almost cried when the EOD team took them away, they had no serial numbers on them.

5 years ago I got hired by the Dept of Defense as a chemical weapons treaty specialist, and I've spent time doing small arms non proliferation work as well as consequence management. Started gaming in 1985 but nothing real serious like some of you here. Really got into databases and programming though. It has been useful here.

I have two sons, one in college becoming a teacher, and one mutant son who is spending his senior year crushing the opposition in either football or as a heavyweight wrestler. I split my time between work, football/wrestling, the AI, and reducing Mike Solli to a hysterical, blubbering mass of Jap fanboy Jello.

What happened to the rest of the Hellcat?

Panjack -> RE: So tell us a little bit about yourself...... (9/4/2009 10:52:58 PM)

My screen name is in honor of my father. One of his nicknames in WWII was "Panzer Jack," which he was given because of the way he did his duties: always pushing on ahead no matter what was in front of him. I've shortened it here to PanJack. He had a ground support role (S-2 Intelligence) in the 100th Bomb Group, 8th AAF. They flew B-17s.

[:(] It got destroyed when we tried to pull it out. It had been covered up after a hurricane and over the years it had sunk into the marine clay (which is why it was well preserved). Unfortunately the clay is very sticky, worse than sucking mud. Every time we pulled something snapped. The crew I was working with wasn't real concerned either, no history nuts amongst them [:(]
