After over 30 turns of fighting, I have managed to finally send the Soviet units in the hex at Voroshilov back to their prison at Vladivostok. They had been hoping to stage a breakout and relink up to their other forces but my troops were too much and the conflict had bogged down into a world war one type trench battle. It is now turn 173, May 28, 1942.

Ground combat at Voroshilov (112,45)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 183100 troops, 1874 guns, 1270 vehicles, Assault Value = 5076

Since I haven't shown it in a while, here is a quick map tour of the fronts.

First the Russian front.

seydlitz_slith -> RE: Nomonhan Redux: Seydlitz (Japan) vs. MBatch729 (Allies) (5/24/2010 12:39:04 PM)

Next the Mongolian front. I have been making good progress here after earlier being almost pushed out of the region.

seydlitz_slith -> RE: Nomonhan Redux: Seydlitz (Japan) vs. MBatch729 (Allies) (5/24/2010 12:45:56 PM)

From here the news is not so rosy. The level of committment required to conduct a campaign against the Soviets has left me short of forces in the southern theater of war. As a result, I am behind in my timetable and in some places I do not have enough forces to quickly wrap up engagements.

Singapore is an excellent example of this. I have had the enemy bottled up here for three months but he is still just barely too strong for me to wipe him out. The end is getting near, however.

Ground combat at Singapore (50,84)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 58529 troops, 794 guns, 127 vehicles, Assault Value = 1817

Defending force 42634 troops, 513 guns, 273 vehicles, Assault Value = 832

Japanese ground losses:
121 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 6 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Allied ground losses:
80 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 2 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 2 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

seydlitz_slith -> RE: Nomonhan Redux: Seydlitz (Japan) vs. MBatch729 (Allies) (5/24/2010 12:50:09 PM)

In Thailand and on the upper Malay peninsula he has moved forces down from Burma in hopes of capturing Bangkok. The Thai units are pitiful. Not worth the rice that it takes to feed them. I have dispatched forces via ship to reinforce the area and get things back under control, but of course this means that these forces are not being used in other places.

seydlitz_slith -> RE: Nomonhan Redux: Seydlitz (Japan) vs. MBatch729 (Allies) (5/24/2010 12:54:29 PM)

In Sumatra, I am attempting to take Palembang by aerial invasion. About a month ago I landed two para units at undefended bases. Using these bases as a bridgehead, I have been steadily flying in more troops and supplies. I now have two pincers closing in on the capital and hope to win the battle without having to conduct an amphibious assault.

Agreed. I find they are most useful for meeting garrison requirements and "maskirovka"

Turn 174 29 May, 1942

Not much happened during the turn other than one of my I boats intercepting CLAA Atlanta off San Diego and putting a torpedo into her. If she is lucky she should make port, but that class of ship is fragile, not being much larger than a destroyer leader.

While I wish that I had got a shot at the transports, I am very happy about the hit on the AA cruiser as it will put her out of the war for quite a while.

seydlitz_slith -> RE: Nomonhan Redux: Seydlitz (Japan) vs. MBatch729 (Allies) (5/25/2010 2:11:41 AM)

I-18 now needs to head for the home islands as she has emptied all of her forward torpedoes during her 45 day patrol. Her spot in the blockade line will be taken by the sub directly north of her, and a newly arriving I boat will fill that subs old station in a day or two depending on the weather.

This might be just in time as one of my Glens has detected a convoy of tankers building in the port and I want to be ready to intercept. I try to keep a sub within range to fly recon flights over the major California ports every turn.

How much oil and resources are you getting out of the Soviet Union?

seydlitz_slith -> RE: Nomonhan Redux: Seydlitz (Japan) vs. MBatch729 (Allies) (5/25/2010 4:18:05 AM)

None yet, but when I get through with the campaign I should be in possession of a fair amount of oil. I can't remember how much off the top of my head, but it is also close to home which matters a lot.

ComradeP -> RE: Nomonhan Redux: Seydlitz (Japan) vs. MBatch729 (Allies) (5/25/2010 11:36:55 AM)

Seydlitz, what's the situation at Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy and what are your plans for the future in that area?

Pretty quiet for now in that area. He still has some bombers based there that occaisionally bomb my northern islands. I have chosen to leave that pocket of resistance alone, keeping a sub on patrol up there just in case he tries to ship in allied forces.

I would like to take this port, but it will be a low priority and will be done only after I wrap up the other targets on the mainland and only if I do not need the troops elsewhere.

ComradeP -> RE: Nomonhan Redux: Seydlitz (Japan) vs. MBatch729 (Allies) (5/25/2010 6:51:50 PM)

Won't increased forts (due to leaving the base alone) be a serious problem when you choose to invade in the future, especially considering what happened to your first landing there?

seydlitz_slith -> RE: Nomonhan Redux: Seydlitz (Japan) vs. MBatch729 (Allies) (5/25/2010 11:31:11 PM)

Yes. In fact they are already a problem in other locations. It means that I will have to come with a much larger force.

Turn 175 30 May, 1942

Not much happened this turn. The only thing worth note was the I-20 put another torpedo into the CLAA Atlanta off San Diego. This should pretty well do that ship in as she is not large enough to handle two torpedoes.

Turn 195 June 19, 1942

I haven't updated in a while, but the game has continued apace.
I find myself in a bad situation in mid-1942 for the first time as a Japanese player. The Russian campaign has continued to tie up resources well beyond the timeframe that I had originally expected. Even worse, victory there is by no means a sure thing. I am engaged on multiple fronts with enough forces to stay in the battle but not enough to win anywhere. In order to pull away from the stalemate, I abandoned my ongoing seige of Alexandrovsk and moved the troops to Gavan in two waves with a third wave destined for Rashin and the Vladivostok front.

Turn 195 June 19, 1942

In China, I advanced as far as Sian, but Mark had fortified the place and put every bit of supply and all units that he could muster there behind the heavy fort levels. At the limit of my supply chain, I held no hope of taking the place. Accordingly, I retreated my forces to Loyang to restore supplies and rebuild. However, as you can tell, I have supply shortages cropping up all over China and no spare supplies to send as the black hole of Russia commands all spare supply to be sent there to keep the massive forces engaged at Vladivostok supplied.

In the DEI, I have been unable to close the deal at Singapore. I need more troops and airpower. Both are tied up fighting Russians.

I still have all of my carriers, as does he. I have, however, lost several battleships while fighting the Soviets.

June 23, 1942

The Japanese have finally captured Vladivostok. 50,900 Soviet troops surrendered or were casualties in the final assault. I watched my engineers reduce the fortification level from 4 to 3 to 2 to 1 to 0 during the same combat phase. Never seen that before. After that, my 5987 AV of troops crushed his less than 500 AV of troops. I have bombed his troops there for months with everything that could fly and finally broke his supply stockpiles.
This makes all the difference.
I have immediately set all troops to rest for a few turns. All of my bombers are standing down to rest and replenish. Minesweepers are enroute to sweep the mines in the harbor, and multiple large troop convoys are enroute to pick up the southern and 14th army units to take them south to close the deal at Singapore as well as to reinforce Bangkok. Most of my bombers will be going south soon also. The korean and kwangtung army units will rest for a few days and then start working to roll up the trans-siberian railway clearing out the other half of his army that was not at Vladivostok. I should be able to do this with these forces as I have already beat them two or three times in battle already.

Comrade Stalin will not be pleased.  It will be real interesting to see where this goes from here. If you can close out the Soviets, then you can turn west with overwhelming force.  That would be fun to watch.

seydlitz_slith -> June 27, 1942 (7/10/2010 5:00:27 PM)

As you can see by the post prior, for 25 soviet units to comprise only 476 AV, it is pretty clear that these troops were pounded into mush by the daily bombardments and airfield attacks. After I was certain that I had destroyed the airfield and port, I moved to attacking the ground troops with the bombers. Due to the fort level there were very few indications of casualties from the attack so I had to go on faith that I was doing damage.

Now, my troops set in Vladivostok, red exclaimation point denoting short supply, the port and airfield bombed to rubble. The battle sucked a significant amount of supply out of not only Korea, but out of China and Japan throughout the course of the conflict. The forces involved were so massive that I had no choice other than to continue to feed the monster in hopes that I could win. Now that I have finally won this battle, I must generate and move needed supplies back into Korea and China. This will take a few weeks to do.

Here is the current theater map:
