Orcin -> Should I help the AI GM? (9/4/2009 10:43:25 PM)

I am looking for the most competitive solution to this problem, not the one that gives me the best advantage. Here's the situation.

The AI GM consistently does the following:
- demote player to minors
- promote unsigned free agent
This leaves the team one player short on the major league roster. Usually, it is a pitcher.

I have the following solutions in mind:

1) Do nothing.

2) Go to the team's roster screen and press "auto assign rosters"
Solution #2 always results in the team promoting the player that it just demoted. In a few days, the process repeats itself.

3) Make the transaction for the team by:
a) signing the free agent to a reasonable term contract (1 year if old and expensive, three years if young and cheap)
b) ask the team for a "suggestion" and release whoever is named to reduce the roster back to 40
c) "auto assign roster" to fill the empty slot on the major league team

It seems to me that #3 is the fairest approach, but I just don't feel right meddling with the other teams.

What would you suggest? Does anyone else have this issue, and if so what do you do about it?

I play each game of my own team, and let the AI take care of the rest. However, I do periodically check out the other teams, just to make sure nothing weird is occurring. So, essentially, I wear THREE hats: as Commissioner, as the Dodgers' GM, and the Dodgers' day-to-day dugout manager. With 1.84 not yet being official, our job is to identify problems so Shaun can fix them.

Hopefully, once any remaining problems are ironed out, this level of micromanagement will be unnecessary, and the AI can handle its own business.

I see the computer AI do this alot. They send down good older players and either bring up someone with good potential who's not ready to come up, or promotes an unassigned free agent. I usually check each teams rosters every week in my season to make sure they have 25 players on their MLB roster, and to see who they have demoted. I then adjust their rosters. It seems to happen with pitchers quite a bit.
The computer AI does not handle the rosters very good yet, they send too many good players down to the minors. It seems like an older player with good ratings gets demoted because he is past his potential, while it brings up younger players with good potential, even if their ratings are not good.

The thing that bugs me is the preponderance of the AI pinch-hitting for other position players in a close late game. Why does it do this? Defensive subs I can understand, and of course, putting in a PH for a pitcher. However, if the game goes to extra innings, the AI often runs out of bench players, thus forcing a pitcher to bat. The AI should try to keep at least one bench player in reserve, unless in-game injuries force these players to be used.

kg_1007 -> RE: Should I help the AI GM? (9/8/2009 9:12:08 PM)

I have seen this a few times in my season(just started playing after having the game on CPU for 1 yr) I am in mid-May, and have seen this on several of my early season opponents, carrying 24 men, and/or demoting an all-star(R. Clemons already 4-1, 1.08, .196 BAA 0 HRA) to AAA affiliate for no apparent reason...as the Cardinal's manager, that would help me, but I prefer to win fair and square lol.
I have been considering changing all to human-owned to prevent that. Any thoughts?

Actually, just tried it(human ownership for all) and it does not work[:(] Have to only have one.

I know Shaun has been working on the AI a lot in recent PS versions, so I offer this in the spirit that there are always tweaks to be made.  Today, in the 7th or 8th inning, with one out, down 3-0, a guy on first, and the cleanup hitter up, the AI sacrifice bunted.  Seems a very questionable strategy to me.

The bug mentioned in the original post still occurs frequently in the latest revision. My current way to deal with it is to promote the demoted player back to the AI roster. At least I no longer have to take control of his team to do that.
