corbulo -> computer transport (6/12/2002 7:29:05 PM)

I just figured out you could set up transport one of two ways so the ai does the work:
1-computer (goes to bases with low supply)
2-routine convoy(does same trip over and over)

since i just discovered this, and would like to use this routine convoy feature with barges as well(they do not seem to have an option for routine convoy)

anybody have any helpful hints?

It's all in which order you click the options around. After re-reading the manual and clicking different options in differnet sequences you'll no doubt stumble across it too.

I do number 2 with barges quite succesfully. Have not tried # 1 as I don't trust it will do what I want. Watch out for AI controlled TK/AO convoys though. There appears to be a bug so I set mine on human control and no problem. Many threads on this and I have seen it myself. Don't see it in the first patch though...:confused:

When you put barge TFs under computer control they act as routine convoy.

The problem is, the range radius for them is short (6/12 hexes). Also, until a base in range falls to a point that the computer deems it necessary, the barges will sit around doing nothing most of the time (that I've found anyway). I've had barges supply Buin & Buka automatically out of Shortland & Rabaul. I didn't have a lot of scattered outposts that needed supplying, I guess, and I was supplying the larger bases enough that the barges didn't seem to think they were needed.

In short, it does work when the barges are under computer control, but they tend to be under-utilized. (Note: Most of my experience so far has been early '42 as the Japanese. Later on you might have more bases that would cause the barges to be utilized more.)
