IChristie -> Using the Battle Graphics (6/13/2002 2:08:43 AM)

A Good question asked in another thread. How do you use the battle graphics?

dgaad -> (6/13/2002 2:41:45 AM)

How about one more poll choice :

Leave them on, hit the done button only for unimportant battles.

IChristie -> Sorry no patch for the poll... (6/13/2002 2:54:16 AM)

Sorry, not possible to do a v1.1 for the poll.

(Is there anything that wargamers WON'T suggest an improvement to :D ).

Guess you'll have to pick the one closest to your heart ("use the force, dgaad, feel the force").

This is exactly where I would come down on this subject as well.

Sonny -> (6/13/2002 2:56:59 AM)

I leave them on and watch them unless there are a ton of ships and then I watch a few shots and hit DONE. Somewhat the same for huge air bombardments and huge ground combat.:)

Avenger -> (6/13/2002 2:59:13 AM)

In addition to turning off the battle graphics, I changed the message speed on all messages to 1.0 seconds.

Scouters -> Poll Question (6/13/2002 3:02:10 AM)

I usually leave them on, hitting "Done" for most battles. But every once in a while there's a crucial air strike or surface engagement - and I watch every shot. When these moments come up the battle animations are very satisfying. The only thing that would make them better would be some popcorn to go with 'em.

Thanks,
Scouters

Hartmann -> (6/13/2002 3:20:34 AM)

I only press done for some ground battles (and hope for the patch to elaborate more on them). For me, especially the naval battles are the "salt in the soup" of the game - without them, everything would be too abstracted for my taste. I can do with just icons in a landbased game like WiR, I even prefer it that way there, but *not* in a game about naval warfare - maybe that's the kid in me, but I just *have* to see the vessels shelling each other and the planes attacking the carriers! The battles provide for the nailbiting and at the same time are the reward for all the chores of supply management etc.

So enhancing the (already nice) graphics in the sea battles and the airwarfare would be a *definite* plus in my book. :)

Otoh doing away with them in WitP would be the biggest mistake!!! :eek:

Btw I also have voiced the opinion that the ship/plane graphics on the information screens should be made a bit bigger. There is enough space for that!

Hartmann

von Murrin -> (6/13/2002 3:24:16 AM)

I like the animations, so I tend to watch them. Sometimes I don't, like say, when I have 70k vs. 60k troops, or when my SC TF catches a bunch of barges.

svhrg -> (6/13/2002 3:31:26 AM)

I leave them on for when I am attacking and hit done when I am being attacked - can't stand watching my CVs take hits:(, rather just read about it.:D

Toro -> Watch some, others, eh... (6/13/2002 6:29:40 AM)

I have a tendency to watch the ship related screens (surf combat and air attacks), but click through sometimes on air-to-air and often on escort attacks on subs.

Admiral DadMan -> (6/13/2002 7:16:40 AM)

I have to click done if I'm the one getting pounded by 50 Vals that caught me flat-footed...

mogami -> Leave on but.... (6/13/2002 7:30:34 AM)

Hi, During my airstrikes on enemy carriers I watch the whole show. I yell at pilots who attack a DD while enemy carrier has not yet been hit. I duck and dodge while the flack is firing at my planes. During enemy air strikes I usally just crawl under my desk till the explosions end.

Fred98 -> (6/13/2002 9:30:56 AM)

I use it for information.

I have no interest in reading reports about battle damage because to do so is slow and mundane. Slow and mundane is not fun.

I would prefer to watch all the battle damage to friend and foe alike and then, during the next turn, to read the battle damage repor, only if I feel there was enough damage, to make a difference in the next turn.

I notice that graphically, battle damage to aircraft is not shown. If it were shown graphically I would not need to check the battle damage during the next turn.

I will do anything to avoid slow and mundane. To me, slow and mundane = “Work”.

BTW this is a great game.

Drex -> (6/13/2002 10:11:47 AM)

I leave the graphics on but only watch the major surface battles .

TheProfessional -> (6/13/2002 10:34:06 AM)

Good question.

DONE for ground battles. Leave all other animation on..

One note:

Did anyone ever play that old dumb-down version of Uncommon Valor called 'WW2: Battles of the South Pacific' from QQP?

Uncommon Valor is much better in presentation and scope but I really enjoyed watching the combat animations from WW2. I wish UV would take some hints from the way WW2 did surface combat. It was definitely a thrill.

bradfordkay -> (6/13/2002 10:59:18 AM)

I have to say that I usually watch the surface and air battles (except when my carriers are getting pounded) and NEVER watch the ground battles (they take waaayyy too long).

AlvinS -> (6/13/2002 6:30:29 PM)

I leave to option on, but press done for the Air to Air battles. I sometimes hit done when my carriers are getting trounced, but I still have to listen to the torpedoes hit the water. Maybe its wishful thinking that if I turn it off, the torpedoes will miss.:D

I think the graphics are great by the way.:cool:

Raskal67 -> Poll (6/13/2002 7:28:05 PM)

I usually watch the important surface and air battles but hit done for most of the land and air bombardmant battles.

cyberwop -> I love to watch the battles (6/13/2002 7:44:57 PM)

I watch them. It's one of the most enjoyable parts of the game for me.

I used to watch all the Pac War battles to.

Do you really watch all of it when round after round P39s strafe your AK convoy? I watch a few shots the hit DONE.

But I do like all the animations - the fire from the machine guns of the airplanes - the flak explosions - the misses when bombs or shells hit near a ship - its all great. One exception though, and someone already mentioned it - when the sub is depth charged I reall don't care too much for the water fountain animation - should be more like flak without the smoke.:)

Exactly what I do. My only wish is that the combat summaries could be more flushed out, so I could get more detail when I do hit "Done".

Dirtweasle -> (6/14/2002 2:41:40 AM)

I do watch them most of the time, but wish they had some more detail. While trying to learn what works best for an attack it would be nice to see it "as it happens".

Hey, I never had P39s strafe my AK convoys, yet! But I'd watch it, yes indeed. :)

Hartmann

PS: I even think that if there were no battle animations at all in UV, then I would probably have gone back to WW2: War in the South Pacific, and to Carriers at War. What I find so fascinating about naval warfare is the actual ships and the airplanes. So, in naval games, even in the strategical ones, I absolutely want this "zooming in" on the action, and I always look forward to it when executing my turns. :cool:

Echo -> Are you kidding? (6/14/2002 9:04:58 PM)

I watch every battle, and yell, hoot, holler, and spill beer all over me. On the edge of my seat with every shot fired, and every plane downed. My wife thinks I'm nuts.

I tend not to watch the ground combat. It takes too long, and theres no pretty toy soldiers to see.

Then we'll have to get in a PBEM game so you can spend tedious minutes watching .50 cal mg hits on your AK.:)

Overall though I am much like you - the fact that individual planes (and pilots) and ships are involved fascinates me.:)

Philbill1 -> Decisions Decisions... (6/14/2002 11:48:01 PM)

I watch most of them as I find it increases the tension, i dont watch the ground battles and bombardments as there is very little to them. The patch will probably increase the tension and
will increase their importance.
As a result im not sure where to cast my vote accurately so I will abstain:D
