Anyone know how accurately researched it is? If it was as thoroughly done as Das Boot, for example, a great peek into life in the IJN.

I don't know that much about the Yamato, but from what I saw and do know the movie is pretty accurate in terms of the operations the Yamato were in. I did not think were any major historical inaccuracies. Additionally, the movie did present the final voyage as a massive kamikaze operation and I think dealt with it to my satisfaction. You do see quite a bit of just how different the Nihon Kaigun ran their ships and crews from the Western powers. And here is one quote from the movie that pretty much sums it all up:

"You will herald the sacrifice of one hundred million lives..."

This movie, coupled with Letters from Iwo Jima, has brought to me a better understanding of the Japanese fanaticism and phenomenon of the kamikaze. However, like all Japanese war movies covering the period it does focus more on the protection of the homeland versus Japan's rise as a nationalistic and aggressive power as the cause so many deaths. Still, its a good movie and I suggest everyone to watch it.

By the way, isn't the Yamato the most beautiful and yet useless ship the IJN could have built. What a beauty she was.

The movie could have been made from "Requiem to battleship yamato"

Aww, it probably can't hold a candle to the film "Pearl Harbor"
(ducks and runs) [:D]
Seriously, the snipped I saw made me think I need this one for my DVD collection.  Thanks for posting it.

Pearl Harbor wasn't so bad...you just have to turn off your brain when you watch it...
Yes, the movie would be great for any war movie collection.
