In WITP there were 3 speeds of TF's. Cruise, mission and Full. When I change speeds of TF in AE I get same settings but only 2 speeds. in WITP you would get 3/3 - 3/6 - 6-6 for a TF as an example. but in AE I get 3/6 - 3/6 - 6/6 my question is about cruise speed. It seems cruise speed is the same as mission. If it is why not eliminate the cruise setting? Again the speeds of mission and cruise are the same with no difference in fuel consumption. Shouldn't 3 speeds give me three speeds and 3 different fuel useage?

Mission speed will use speed needed for it to complete mission properly. So for example if you set bombardment fleet to mission speed it will move using speed needed to arrive at night, bombard, and sprint away home using full speed.

If you use cruise speed for same bombardment fleet it will probably arrive in the morning (depending on distance from the home port) and will move slowly back home as well, being vulnerable to air attacks.

If you use full speed for same bombardment fleet it will move at full speed all the time, thus spending more fuel than needed.

All 3 speed settings have their own use.

I understand their use it's that it seems that cruise and mission have the same movement rate.

What you are seeing are 3 different settings, and section 6.2.3 TASK FORCE SPEED may be of more help.
Full and Cruise speeds lock the TF into moving at those speeds regardless of mission.

When the TF is set at Mission speed, it will move according to its mission, which most of the time is to cruise.

quote:

6.2.3 TASK FORCE SPEED
Every TF has a calculated Maximum TF Speed and a Cruising TF Speed. The Maximum TF Speed is the maximum number of hexes the TF may move during a movement resolution phase, if it is attempting to move at maximum speed. There are only a few situations where a ship will move at maximum speed, as ships generally move at their cruising speed to minimize fuel usage and operational damage. These speeds are calculated by taking the appropriate speed of the slowest ship in the TF. The TF speed in hexes is equal to the slowest ship’s speed in knots times number of hours in a pulse (12) and then divided by number of miles in a hex (40), and is rounded up or down based on the computer’s calculations. Regardless of how fast it is, no TF may move more than 9 hexes per phase.

All ships are given a movement allowance of at least 1 hex, even when out of fuel or badly damaged. This has been done for playability purposes to avoid the need to tow ships to port.

Over time, a TF will move the right number of hexes for it’s speed, but some pulses it will move 1 hex more than others (e.g. a TF with a speed of 10 will move 4 hexes 1 out of every 3 turns). This speed applies to both 12 hour movement pulses. So on the turns that the TF has a speed of 3, it will move 3 in both the day and night phases (6 total for the day), while on turns it moves a speed of 4, it will move 4 in both the day and night phases (8 total for the day).

In WiTP, I used "cruise speed" a LOT, since it greatly reduced system damage. In AE, however, I find there is little system damage to ships when using "mission speed." Plus, what system damage that does occur is quite quick to fix. As far as full speed goes, I honestly don't think I've ever set a TF to use it! This is doubly so in AE, considering the massive drop in endurance that happens.

Moral of the story is...if in doubt about what speed to use or unless you have a very specific reason to use cruise/maximum speed, always use Mission Speed.

USS Henrico -> RE: TF Speeds (9/12/2009 12:14:14 AM)

I've noticed the Queen Elizabeth will pile up 20 System damage or so making a round trip from San Diego to Sydney using mission speed for transport. Lots of time in dry dock for her, it seems, which I assume has to do with her high speed on those transits and size.

Also, using full speed is quite appropriate if you have no air cover and there are enemy carriers in the area. As this surprised Allied commander said when the KB showed up off Noumea: "Run!" [:)]
