Rothgar81 -> Demo available? (9/13/2009 11:19:09 AM)

I found this game by chance and I think I might like it.
The problem is, it is still 50€, although it is already 2 years old. I don't want to spend that much money without trying it first.

Is there a demo for this game?

Hi Rothgar
it is a good game, and now seems to have the bugs more or less worked out. I can't comment on the solo game against the AI, but the PBEM will give you a challenge. Be prepared that, even with the proposed fixes, the PBEM will take at a year or two to complete, so you'll need to commit some time as well as 50 euros.
Unfortunately, I don't think a demo is available.

Are there any gameplay videos besides the 4 "official" ones around? I really don't like to buy a pig in a poke!

Is there really no way to make sure I like the game before buying it?

My best advice would be to read some of the "playable" threads in the forum and other threads in general.

The bottom line is this:

1. If you are looking for Empires in Arms then this isn't it.
2. If you are looking for a bug free, balanced game, then this isn't it.
3. If you are looking for satisfactory single player play, then this isn't it.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

... And if you are looking for a guy, who keeps playing this game and keeps adding comments to this forum - in spite of never revealing a positive thought about it - this is him [;)]

So maybe it holds some quality after all...

To me - and many others - this is the best way to play the great, old board game of Australian Design Group: Empires in Arms as PBEM. Even if not 100% there, it is close enough.
But as this is an adaption of a boardgame, it may not be as intuitive and easy to come by as games born for computers.
And it is not designed for the benefit of the AI either. But it is a game, that it still growing, and most contributions here attempts to improve it.

My bottom line is:

If you want to commit some time and effort you will find a great friend for a long time - and maybe some new playmates [:)]

/eske

(Sorry Neverman, but thought Roth here deserved at least two oppinions)

eske, don't apologize to me, I agree, the more viewpoints the more informed decision he can make about buying this game.

This game is an adaptation, it is certainly not a "faithful" one.

If you haven't played Empires in Arms before then the game might appeal to you if you can get over the things I've already mentioned.

btw, yes, I'm still playing the game... when I make a commitment to a group I do all I can to stick by that commitment (not everyone can say that here), win or lose.

You're not talking about the 1.08 test game, are you? Are you back in?

No, I'm not, I never started that game (if I had I wouldn't have bailed out despite that guy "running" things). I'm talking about the other two games I've been playing for over a year real-time now (and about a year game time too, the time ratio is about 1:1).

Yes, it is just a game, for fun and entertainment. It works for the most part, does what it does as a faithful (not perfect) adaptation of the original boardgame, it's playable, and getting better with each update.

I don't understand the comment about not being designed for AI. It is. The AI needs some improvements and enhancements to be more challenging, but that's doable and on the list for future updates.

Roger that! [8D] Despite what some jackass might say. [;)]
