saving Mc Arthur ... any theories ?

Torplexed -> RE: saving Mc Arthur (9/17/2009 1:24:17 AM)

No theories. Fact. I'm ditching Dugout Doug and his giant ego in the PI. He won't have to return, he's already there. [:D]

Zacktar -> RE: saving Mc Arthur (9/17/2009 1:31:04 AM)

WITP AE gives him a 71 rating for leadership, 72 for aggression and 59 for land combat. Unless and until they implement an ego stat, I'll continue to PBY him over to Oz to run SWPac. [;)]

FirstPappy -> RE: saving Mc Arthur (9/17/2009 1:54:59 AM)

Someone should start a poll - "Who would you rather save, Gen. MacArthur or Pvt. Ryan?"

So, not to good then with other words...

59 for Landcombat counts...

Dr. Duh -> RE: saving Mc Arthur (9/17/2009 2:05:20 AM)

Do you actually have to rescue him? I vaguely remember from witp that even if he stays, when the SWPAC HQ arrives he's magically there. I haven't gotten that far in my AE games, but if you look on the reinf schedule, he's leading SWPAC.

There doesn't seem to be significantly better available without giving up a lot in terms of leadership and aggression. There's MG Charles Thompson, 71 land combat but 63 leadership and 48 (ouch!) aggression; the next best option is LTG G. Grunert, 62 land combat (Mac +2) and 71 leadership (equal) but a 52 for aggression. (Grunert does get a 73 on inspiration, way better than Dougie's 34.)

Incidentally, my game, started with the release version of AE and patched to the latest "hotfix" now has two GEN MacArthur's in the leader list -- changing from one to the other would cost 200 PP.

sfbaytf -> RE: saving Mc Arthur (9/17/2009 3:55:19 AM)

MacArthur sure did have a huge ego. My dad had to stand guard with a whole bunch of other poor sailors, GI's and Marines as he drove from his HQ to the airfield in Japan. Apparently he enjoyed the spectacle. The whole route was lined with GI's, Marines and sailors. I'm sure they would have preferred to be doing other things in postwar Japan-especially as it was when the Korean War was going on.

A couple of my dads other friends were in the marines in WW2. They had nothing good to say about MacArthur.

As for me I always make it a point to save him to fight another day. Like him or hate him, had he been captured it would have been a huge propaganda victory for Japan.

Unfortunately, the only thing I see from the thread is that no WitP AE developer answered the question about the effects of the different leadership/skill ratings. Could a developer at least confirm the last two posts of P.Hausser's referenced thread, please?

Oh I've read that, and the WITP post it links to. In the absence of more specifics, I don't see either Thompson or Grunert as preferable to MacArthur.

Magister Militum -> RE: saving Mc Arthur (9/18/2009 3:05:58 PM)

I will worry about saving Mac when there is an option to cashier him for his behaviour in preparing to defend the Phillipines and in getting his airforce wiped out despite having lots of warning.  Not to mention failing to stock the Bataan fortress with food.  Until then he can fight and die in a foxhole.
