Excellent US Civil War maps (Full Version)

There are some fine US civil war maps at the Civil War Preservation Trust site. You have to register to view them, but it's free. There are historical maps, modern schematic maps (like the one below), and animated maps showing the changing position of units throughout the battle. Here is a map of the northern portion of the Champion Hill battlefield:

I agree -- it's a great series.

Their map of Williamsburg is inadequate, though -- it leaves out all of the felled trees and abatis, even though that's where most of the fighting took place! Which makes me suspect that other maps might have similar omissions. But the maps are still outstanding in terms of clarity, and because they show multiple phases of the battle on a single map.

Great resource, but I just noted that Howard's 13th Corps is shown holding Cemetery Hill at the end of the first day of Gettysburg. [&:] So... some measure of caution is in order on these.

Nope, that map shows the second day. But yep, it should be 11th Corps. And the blue 54th NC regiment should be 54th NY.

Glad to know I didn't malign them unfairly just because they showed as open space the area at Williamsburg that was filled with horizontal trees!

These maps are still an improvement over the ones on Wikipedia, which are -- to my recollection -- the most complete set of Civil War battle maps on the Web. So they are still a good thing.

Do you own the book, "Maps of Gettysburg"? It's pretty detailed, although I don't like the quality of the maps. Most authors don't spend a lot of time making sure their maps are high-quality, very detailed and accurate. I love maps!

Still a great resource. I'd like to own that book of Gettysburg maps that you mention, it's on my Amazon Wish List, but I suspect I'll never find the money for it.
